Search http://www.google.com for ""passenger lists"" and get a link to
http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/ (Official Data: Passenger Lists Dating
from 1890 Through To 1960)
There's a lot of information free, and more on the manifests, for
which one has to pay (findmypast.com). An Ethel Button, aged 26, is
listed going to Melbourne >from London in 1891.

My experience is that not all personal details in the manifests are
correct, and people that weren't able to sail were not always deleted.

For not-specifically-Jewish queries dealing with England (Scotland,
Wales) I recommend soc.genealogy.britain

Burials at Beth Moses, Wellwood cemeteries #rabbinic

To my colleagues,

Unfortunately, I find myself in the position where I often times
visit the Beth Moses cemetery in Long Island. While I am there, I
take the opportunity to visit the kever of the Tzeilemer Rov in
Wellwood, the adjoining cemetery.

I would like to know if other rabbonim, chassidishe rebbes are
buried in these two cemeteries. Thank you.

IDENTIFICATION: Losiec, POLAND? Military Unit #general

Michael McTeer <mcteer@...>

Seeking identification of military unit which I have posted at:
http://www.genealogy.com/users/m/c/t/H-michael-Mcteer/PHOTO/0035photo.html

The original is in the possession of a "WYMAN" family, Jacob, Rose, Tillie
and half sister "Marige" (STEINMAN), of Losiec who immigrated to the US
before WWII.

I do not know if the writing on the placard is any more visible or can be
better scanned (which probably would identify the picture). Perhaps someone
familar with military uniforms, insigna, medals. The unit is comprised of
thirty-five men. There do not appear to be any firearms, but some type of
belted long knife or short swords are shown.

Thanks,

Do You Know - Louis "GREER", Los Angeles, CA USA/Icchok Lipa GRYNBAUM, Sosnowiec, POLAND #general

Michael McTeer <mcteer@...>

It is times like this that I realize what a poor genealogist I would make.
And a sense of wasted years.

I have known of my cousin Louis "GREER" for a few years now and have
reported of him here. He was born Icchok Lipa GRYNBAUM, 27 Jul 1923,
Sosnowiec, Poland, s/o Izrael David GRYNBAUM and Golda LENCZNER. He had at
least one sister Brucha GRYNBAUM, born 28 Feb 1925, Sosnowiec. Golda is the
d/o Litman Isaac and Gitel Rywke (GLIKSMAN) LENCZNER of Szczekociny, Poland.
Golda died 15 Aug 1943, Sosnowiec. I do not know what became of her husband,
daughter or if there might have been other children. Golda is the sister of
my great grandmother, Liba. After the war, Golda's brother, David LENTZNER
(1894 - 1967), went to Europe looking for relatives and found only Louis
returning to the US with him. Louis had a numbered tattoo so apparently he
was at Auschwitz.

I have Louis's death certificate, 11 Aug 1967, giving his address on Delita
Dr., Woodland Hills, CA, noting a wife "Ronnie" whom I was unable to locate.
That he worked for "Landis". For whatever reason, I was under the impression
that he had no children. However this past week, I received something that I
should have obtained long ago; his Los Angeles Times obit. This names his
wife and two children!!! Apparently a son and a daughter (whom I hesitate to
name as they are probably still living). I believe I have tentatively id'd
them with the daughter being born in CA in 1955 and the son being born in CA
in 1960. Further the son maybe the GREER who married a WENTZEL in 1980 (Los
Angeles Co.). Ronnie's surname maybe ACK. Apparently Louis and Ronnie were
NOT married in CA. Ronnie's parents maybe Frank ACK (1884-1972) and Dorothe
(WEBBER) ACK (1894-1985).

Would I be correct in believing it a bit unusual for the Masons to have been
involved in the funeral service of Louis (Hillside Memorial Park)? The
particular 'lodge' located in Santa Monica has an active website with a
number of Jewish surnames. An initial report >from them reports Louis was not
an member of their lodge and the service was probably performed on behalf of
another lodge.

If you know of this family, please contact me privately.

Thanks,

Austrian town (Kotzuijur?) #general

The ship's manifest for my father's brother lists a town name in
Austria that looks like *Kotzuijur*. I doubt that is right, but it is
difficult to read. Does that look familiar to anyone?

SCHOCHER #southafrica

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Is anyone familiar with a SCHOCHER family who came originally >from Telsiai,
Lithuania, to South Africa. They may have also come >from other towns in
Lithuania or >from Riga.

I was told that there was a SCHOCHER family who owned a furniture store in
Cape Town and was related to the SACHAR family there as well. Evidently,
SCHOCHER is another variant spelling of SACHAR.

The reason I am posting this is that I have found a living branch of the
SCHOCHER family who left Telsiai and settled in Estonia and now live in
Israel.

Thanks for any assistance.

Yiddish Theatre in New York City in the 20th century #yiddish

Let me express my appreciation to Steven LASKY for his splendid compilation
of the history of the Yiddish Theatre in NYC.

As a relative of Samuel "Zuny" MAUD, I wish to correct the spelling of his
name, which is erroneously shown as "Zuni Moud." I have seen Zuny's work in
the YIVO archives in New York City, and have compiled a partial genealogy
for him, his brother Philip "Zeidel" MAUD and their sister Matilda (married
surname: ROSMAN). I visited the family in their Catskill guest house in
the early 1940s.

Zuny and his relatives are descended, like me, >from Rabbi Shmuel Hakatan
MOED z"l. I shall welcome comments or queries.
