Finding Missing people on EIDB #general

To add to the message >from David Rosen, Boston MA - Finding Grandmother on EIDB:
On www.stevemorse.org EIDB gold form & Russians to America, you can enter town name
only & ethnicity: Hebrew. The index will allow you to look at misspelled names,
those missing surnames or missing first few letters of surname. I am working on a
database for Lubow, ethnicity Hebrew. I completed a database of 752 passengers from
Tarsia - Italian using the gold form & Italians to America & found the town spelled
8 different ways. I also used the paid site to search other ports by town only.

Fw: OPPENHEIMER #germany

Hi Genners,
I recently went to Koln in Germany to the Jewish cemetry in DEUTZ to visit
my grandfather's grave Richard HEIDENHEIM. While I was there I noticed the
memorial for Therele OPPENHEIMER born 9th July 177? not quite
clear died 5th March 184 there were also some other members of the
OPPENHEIMER family there. The reason I took the photo is that there are
links to my family tree via my Grandmothers family the SAARBACHS. Which
are as follows. If you would like a photo please reply to my e-mail

OPPENHEIMER, Max Born: 30 Jun 185 in Koln, Germany Died: Bet. 1906 - 1944
Number of children: 6
+OPPENHEIM, Mimi Emilie Wilhelmine Born: 3 Feb 1865 Died: Bet. 1907 - 1960

OPPENHEIMER, Olga Friedricke Born: 09 Jul 1886
OPPENHEIMER, Friedrich Alexander Born: 5 Sep 1887

OPPENHEIMER, Maria Herta Born: Abt. 1898
OPPENHEIMER, Liese Born: Abt. 1898

another reason for ritual use of coins #germany

Claire Wallerstein <com@...>

Hello

Firstly, thank you so much to everyone who tried to help me solve the
conundrum of the five coins that my great grandfather had kept. Nearly
everyone suggested they were to do with Pidyon HaBen.

But I thought you might be interested in another explanation I've just
been sent by the people at the Frankfurt Jewish Museum, which I think is
possibly more likely (as I understand it, the coins for Pidyon HaBen
should be high value and/ or silver - these little copper kreutzer coins
definitely weren't - and also I couldn't understand why he would have the
coins himself... his family weren't Cohanim).

Apparently there was a custom among Jewish communities in southern Germany
up to Hessen (including Frankfurt) to tie little strings or bags of coins,
often unusual (foreign) or old ones (one of the coins we have is from
1777, and one >from my great grandfather's birth year of 1849) onto the male
child during circumcision as amulets to protect against anything going wrong.

I hope this might be interesting to others doing research for this area.

Best wishes, Claire Wallerstein (Madrid, Spain) <com@...>
