One last try before I pitch this death certificate. If this person is yours
I will gladly send it to you. Have others with incorrect information sent to
living family members if they know them or just disposed of the material? I
don't want to make the daughter uncomfortable.

In early 19th century Galician death records the column for recording
the name of decedent's father often contains the word that appears to
be "selbss" or "selbst". Does this mean that the decedent appeared
himself (or herself) with no one able to inform who the father was?
It could mean "the same".

So Moses ben Nathan's father would only be known as Nathan.
Just guessing.

Re: PECKER/STEIN in Brooklyn #general

In a case like this, where you have a first name and an approximate
date of birth for someone living in the U.S., you can use Steve
Morse's birthday pages, which allow for searching of U.S. public
records databases on outside websites.

Go to http://www.stevemorse.org/birthday/privateeye.html . If you
enter a first name along with a year and month of birth, you do not
have to enter a surname. You may also enter a location if you wish.

The results will show you a person's full name, towns where he/she has
lived, age, and "possible relatives."

I searched for "Malka" born October 1975 and there is a listing for a
Malka in Brooklyn along with a 56-year-old named Rachel. You can try
changing the search inputs to get additional results.

Once you have a possible match, you can use another Steve Morse
search, Google, or an internet white pages site to get an address or
phone number. If this fails, you could also purchase the information
from People Finders.

While in Israel recently, I met a gentleman who does not have access
to the internet, and has authorized me to do research on his behalf.
( I live in Los Angeles). Meir STEIN who is now 60, came to Brooklyn
in the mid 70s and married the former Rachel PECKER, whose father was
the late Rabbi Dov Pecker. They had two daughters. The first
daughter, who he is almost certain (explanation to follow) was named
Malka, was born in either in 1975 or early 1976. >
Can you help?

Re: Where is M. Furjaszeg? #general

Judith Diamond

I suspect 'M. Furjaszeg' is Vrsek to be found at 49°11' 18°09', which is now in
Slovakia. They would sound similar if the V is read as an F and the G is read
as a K. The s in Vrsek has a symbol over it implying a more multiple sound.
I imagine it was once in Moravia and many of the towns there are prefixed
Moravske or just M. It can be found via Stetl Seeker.

Update of the Databases #general

Manuela Wyler <m.wyler@...>

Two major updates on the databases of jewishtraces.org
In the database called "various lists 1939-1945" we added 1200 new entries
and names of people in the department of the Basses Alpes ( nowadays Alpes
de haute-Provence) in France and in the Internment database we added names
and data for people who used to live in Belgium prior to May 1940 and who
were in French jails and deported. It's a partial list collected post war by
the Belgian administration.
The address to search the databases is
http://www.jewishtraces.org/search.php
or through Steve Morse's research pages.
http://www.stevemorse.org/holocaust/traces.html

The total of names on line is now close to 20 000.

TENENHAUS family tree #romania

mrslats@...

I am seeking information on the family tree of TENENHAUS (also
TANNENHAUS, TANENHAUS) related to Falik TENEHAUS and his children:
Mordechai, Jack, Rose, Esther Tenenhaus FRIEDMAN, Max (Tenenhaus)
TANNEN, and Blanche (Bertha?) Tenenhaus FEUER. Falik lived in Suceava
in the late 19th - early 20th century, and was a descendent of Velvil
de Roiter, a well known and learned patriarch of the TENENHAUS family,
and Abraham TENENHAUS, who owned a glassware business in the mid-19th
century. I have had contact with some other members of this SIG several
years ago on this family tree, including one cousin >from Canada who had
done some genealogy research but unfortunately have lost the records.
If you have information on this part of the TENENHAUS family tree, I
would appreciate hearing >from you (again).

Thanks,

Re: Ancestor's Burial Location #general

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

When looking for Jewish cemeteries, the first place you should have looked
is the IAJGS Cemetery Database under Ohio and Alliance which is located in
Stark County: http://www.jewishgen.org/cemetery/northamerica/ohio.html
There you would have found a contact regarding the Jewish Cemetery in
Alliance, OH. An e-mail address is provided and you can contact this person
for further information on the burials in the cemetery.

The second thing you should have done is look at the JOWBR database at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/

You can also look up your ancestors in the on-line Ohio Death Index:
http://ohsweb.ohiohistory.org/death//results.cfm For instance, you will
find listed Max Baer's Death Certificate, Volume #5717, Certificate #45879.
You can then order the certificate for a nominal fee on-line. Or, you can
also use the information gathered to see if the City of Alliance has a death
certificate/burial certificate. If they do, then you can order it >from
their Health Department at: http://www.cityofalliance.com/health/

Good luck,

Ann Rabinowitz
