Hebrew Cemetery Tombstones - Sonora, CA #general

Hello genners,

On a recent trip to Sonora, CA, I was able to take a few pictures of
several tombstones in the Hebrew Cemetery. Unfortunately the cemetery
is closed to the public and locked, so I had to stretch my arm through
the gate and take the pics that way.

The names on the stones are:

CARO, Hartwig - >from Posen, died 1853
BAER, Fanny - daughter of Mr. & Mrs. H Baer - died July 1870, 2 years old
REEB, Moses - >from Germany, died 1891
OPPENHEIMER, Caroline - daughter of Henry & Hannah - infant died Dec.
1822, 1 month old

Hello genners,

Divorce in the mid 1800s, Hungary #general

Hello,

My gggf, Salomon STOSZEL, and his first wife Rosi ADLER had 3
children -- Lipot b. 1863, Rezi b. 1865, and Josefa b. 1868.
They lived in Parutcza, Nyitra.

Salomon and Rosi divorced, and Salomon married Marie LICHT of
Kormend in the mid 1870s. They had 6 children.

My questions are these--following the divorce, would Rosi and her
children kept using the STOSZEL surname, or could they have adopted
her maiden name, ADLER? If Rosi remarried, would the children have
adopted her new husband's surname? Was there any kind of alimony
in those days? Would Salomon have contributed something towards the
welfare or education of his children with Rosi? Was it likely that
Salamon would have remained in contact with his children and that
the half-siblings would have known each other? Any insight into these
questions would be most appreciated!

Dear Genners,

My wife's 2 x Great Grandfather was Rabbi Meyer LIPSCHUTZ or LIPSCHITZ. He
is supposed to have been a Rabbi in Kaunas, Lithuania. We are interested in

I am interested to learn more about the life and times of Rabbi Nathan
GERSTEIN. I believe he married my great-great Aunt Fannie nee SCHAFFLER in
Boston or New York. According to the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial
Registry Rabbi Gerstein died in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas on 5th July 1919
and is buried in the Agudas Achim Cemetery in San Antonio. JOWBR also
gives his date of birth as 16th November 1887. According to his WW1 Draft
Registration Card he was born in Litau & lived at 115 Newton, San Antonio.
This however gives his date of birth as 15th August 1887. Although he had
three children none of them married and had children and they are no longer
alive. If someone can provide with information about him and take a digital
photograph of his headstone for me, I should be very grateful.

Firstly it is quite possible that "Kogaran Australia "(as there are only a
few hits on Google on this) is Kogarah, a suburb of Sydney. It is an
established suburb with a thriving Jewish population so you may find there
are synagogue records.

Secondly you may like to consider the spelling JAFFE (pron. "Jaffee"). When
my father went to Auckland, New Zealand in 1939 he was very close to Ruben &
Edie Jaffe (she was a MELZER). I am pretty Ruben came >from Lithuania (like
my parents). There was another Jaffe family there (Max and descendants) who
were related to Ruben but came through Manchester (I think) in the U.K. and
I am unsure of how they were connected.

There are a lot of Jaffes in NZ (probably still all related) and it is
probably quite a common name world-wide. I had a connection with the NZ ones
through marriage for a while - my late brother's sister married a Jaffe) and
if you feel this is the right direction I will try and make contact.

BTW there is also a John EISEN in Melbourne too.

In investigating a relative's family tree, I found a
family narrative that had been typed in 1932 talking
of the origins of the JAFFEE family in northeast
Lithuania (Papile, Kupiskis). I would like to share
the document with descendants, who may be in
Australia. The story ends with:

"Samson JAFFEE, father of Annis EISEN, goes to Africa
and later to Australia where he buys an ostrich farm."

I found a 1924 ship manifest for an Annis Eisen who
was visiting the US as a tourist. She was born in
about 1884, wife of Jules Eisen of Kogaran, Australia.

If anyone can locate a descendant of Samson Jaffee or
Annis Eisen, I would love to pass on information on
their family roots in Lithuania (and can connect them
with a couple of other descendants of this family in
the U.S.).

I'm conducting some research into the history of one of the Jewish communities. The records go as far as the end of the 18th century (1780s). However,... and these are the questions:

1. In one of the books of a local cathedral (dated 1681) is stated: "5s paid a jew turned Christian..." This is one of several entiries of the same nature. I dont know whether it was the same Jew or several. I cannot confirm either he resided locally or was just passing by and found himself in strenous circumstances, and therefore asked for help. I also remember reading in one of the well-known books on the subject (cannot recall the reference at the moment), that there were around 300 Jews, all based in London by 1690. Now, was there any Jewish charity at that time? What was the Church position on Jews at that time? How did he need to prove that he did convert? Could it be that the Cathedral was the only source available, and the only way to obtain some help would have been to "convert" (given to the fact that the only Jewish source for help was in London, for example)?

2. Would anyone confirm that Daniel Maccabeth a Low Country [cf. Holland/Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg] could have been a Jew (to me Maccabeth seems obviously Jewish, but I would like to hear another opinion)?

3. Could anyone tell me how Torah scrolls arrived to this country? How did they travel in general? Who was able to carry them in their travels? A Torah scroll in question is about 250 years old, and which originated in North Africa.

I am leaving for SA in 2 days. I will only be in CT for 2 working days
and then off to Jhb. I am trying to plan my CT time as effectively as
possible.

I am such an ignoramus on genealogy research still. I need advice
about using LDS centres.

I have not found information on either my Jewish or non-Jewish
families on the LDS internet site. The internet site seems to only
have the information on my families that I have posted. (or perhaps I
am not using the site correctly???)

1. Is ALL the LDS data available on their internet site?
2. If not, does each centre hold different materials/data?
3. If so, then is it recommended that I go to both the CT and JHb
centres, and perhaps the Pretoria centre as well (seeing as I am going
to the archives there)?
4. Are they likely to hold additional documents to the SA archives? I
cant find naturalization or death/estate documents for my grandparents
on NAAIRS. could LDS possibly have these documents if they are not on
the NAAIRS system?
