GROSSMAN - Savran, Ukraine and Philadelphia #ukraine

ggeller@...

My paternal grandmother's GROSSMAN family originated in Savran, Ukraine.
Most of the family resettled in Philadelphia in the first decade of the 20th
century, although my grandmother, Gussie (Geesa) GROSSMAN GELLER and
grandfather, Israel GELLER left Philadelphia for Toronto in 1907. Gussie's
father was Hirsch GROSSMAN (GROSFMAN). According to border crossing
documents, Gussie and children visited her brother I.GROSSMAN at 217 Vine
St., Philadelphia, in 1909 and 1915. She had a brother Samuel who was
married to Rose. Their children were Louis, Sarah, Gertrude, Anna, Ethel,
Mary, Jack, Henry all of Philadelphia. I recall meeting a cousin Beatrice
at one point. My aunt, Sadie (Beatrice) of Toronto, returned to
Philadelphia to live for a number of years mid-century.

Our Toronto family has lost touch with this side of our family. I would
like to locate descendants of the Grossmans as I will be attending the
JewishGen conference.

I'd appreciate assistance with this.

Gloria Geller
GROSSMAN - Savran, Ukraine; GELLER - Khoschevatoye; AVRUTSKY,
BERLINGER(BERLIGER), BENSON, EVERETT, HUKIM, RUN, GARFIELD - Talnoye,
Toronto, New York; GRANOFSKY (GRANOVSKY) - Zvenagorodka; GUBERNICK - (?)

Moderator's Note: Here is a classic example of Language, Penmanship
and Spelling! In German script, the "S" looks like lower case "f",
extended below the line, so to speak. So in actuality the name is
still GroSSman, and not Grosfman.

City of my maternal Grandfathers birth #ukraine

maraud1@...

Dear Geners,
My Grandfather was raised in the city of Stavishche and I
incorrectly assumed that that was the city of his birth. While
viewing his Naturalization Records, I found that he was born in
a City called Antonowka, Russia. I have found no mention of this
city in a world atlas, Map of Russia 1914,and an Internet search.
Does anyone know this name or have any information on this city.
I am assuming that it is in Russia or Ukraine. He was born in 1885
as a reference date.

Thank you sincerely,
Marvin Silverman

Hi Genners -

I'd like to thank the many people who offered suggestions to me as a way to find my
mysterious grandfather who I have not been able to pinpoint because so many other
people have the same name, same country of origin and same occupation. It's been
enlightening, although I have not found out anything new yet. I have some trails
to search. I would like to thank Carol Cohen for all her suggestions and
particularly Renee Steinig for all her valuable work. It's wonderful how this
community gives of itself!
Thanks, again.

Around 1920 my g-father ran away >from the Civil Revolution of Russia through
Mogilev-Podolsky.It was winter and he crossed the iced river Dnestr in
Mogilev-Podolsky. Mogilev-Podolsky was a transit point. Still today is a town of
border and lives on exchanges with Moldovia. I have been twice in Mogilev-Podolsky
and apparently there are no archives where to research. I hope somebody has better
knews on archives in Mogilev-Podolsky to share.

I'm interested in the town of Mogilev Podolski, in southwest Ukraine, near the
border with Moldova... Does anyone know if it was a transit point for Jews

I submitted a request about two weeks ago and was informed at that time that they

end; the length of time could vary depending on the complexity of the case.

Dear Evan:
My maternal ancestors were all >from Mogilev Podolsky and nearby Kamenets Podolsky.
They often crossed over The River to Romania and then took the train to Hamburg
Germany sailing to London and then on to the United States. My great grandmother
and some of her younger children even stayed a few years in Bucharest with the
children starting school there. Hope this helps answer your question.

Baruch is a Hebrew name, It means "Blessed." Blessed translates into Latin as

When you have someone in Germany named Baruch, always check out the Benedicts and
Bernhards.

I may be part of that circle. A paternal ggm, Kahle Mainzer of Lorch, married a son
