SOUCHOTINSKY #general

JKLAYMAN@...

I am hoping to find someone who may help me find my father family.
Eussie and Anastasia Friedman SOUCHOTINSKY (SUKHOTINSKY). My father was
one of 11 siblings, who were born in Dnepopetrovsk(Yekaterinaslav). My father
left home in 1914 to go study in Belgium. He became a political prisoner of
the Germans until 1917 when he was repatriated to his home in Russia. This was
at the time of the revolution so he left with his brother and returned to
Belgium until his death in 1951. All I know is that his parents moved to
Crimea in 1922. Since 1945 we have had no contact with the family. I am
the last one one the family and would like to be able to tell my daughters
about that side of the family
Please help me. I cannot find any info re this family
Thanks

Re: Matching a name to a New York city address #general

Peter Zavon <pzavon@...>

Since the "25" was written after the name of the city it is clearly not an
apartment number fit the Postal Zone for that address. ZIP Codes became
available for use on a voluntary basis in 1963 and were mandatory for second
and third class bulk mailings in 1967. At that point they quickly went into
common use by everyone. So an address given using a Postal Zone could be
from as late as 1968 or so, although my recollection is that ZIP Codes were
pretty much universally used by late 1967.

It could be but prior to what we now know as zip codes in the USA (postal
codes in other parts of the world) the USA used zone numbers.

I have an ancestor whose first name is listed in various records as Yevzor
or Evzor or Ozer... >from Slutsk, Belarus.
You have two possibilities here.
There is one line of names coming >from Joshua (Yehoshooe),
which in Russia comes out as Evsei (pronounced Yevsei), Govshei,
Ovsei, Oshe and Yoshue. In English-speaking countries these usually
become Joshua, but I have seen some people take the English name Herman.
The other line of names comes >from the biblical name Asher,
one of Jacob's sons. In eastern Europe it appears as Osher, Oser, Usher.

I greatly enjoyed meeting everyone, new and first-timers, at the Philly
Conference. I went to the "Free" Library to research my Philly families in
the telephone directories of the past, and reviewed Philadelphia City
Directories online. I participated in the bus tour to Northeast
Philadelphia and a wonderful tour of the historic synagogues. I also
reviewed my records and notes, as well as chatted with one of my cousins who
previously lived in Philly.

This is my updated information and request for connection with anyone who
may recognize any of the families or know of their whereabouts, or have
information or clarification about the locations of the streets or
communities listed below.

I am researching several surnames of families originally >from Panevezys
(Ponievezh) and Pumpenai in Lithuania, most of whom came to Philadelphia
from New York, and then lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, some >from the
1920s, others >from the 1930s, until the 1960s.

I am seeking family connections to the following:
David LANE, electrical contractor/supplier, wife Sarah, children Annie,
Hilda, Esther, Lily and George.
According to my cousin, David lived (timeframe?) in Wissahicken Park near
Lincoln Park. >from telephone listings over the years, some possible street
names for David's home address were McKinley, Marvine, Oakmont, Roselyn,
Sharswood and Walnut. David was known to live in Philadelphia form the 1930s
to 1960s.
Isadore LANE, wife Anne, daughter Sylvia (who married KAHN), son Amor.
Isadore was a tailor who consistently was listed at Delancey Street from
1918 to 1952.
Sadie (Scheine Leah) COHEN
Belle KUMENS or KUMINS who lived in the "C" St., east of Front street.
Gertrude HIRSHORN and her son Bruce who, according to my cousin, were in the
furniture business. According to a 1955 listing, he lived at Mayfair House.

Jackie,

This is indeed Russian variation of Hebrew name Ezer.
Father of the Israel first President Chaim Weizmann was known as Evzor (or

Most probably seventh Israeli President, Ezer Weizman who was a nephew of
Chaim Weizmann inherited his grndfather's name.
