I have been unable to find anything regarding my father'family. until 1917
they lived in Dnepopetrovsk(Yekaterinaslav).
I also know that there were 11 siblings in the family. My grandfather had a
very profitable hardware business, that they were very middle class as
they also had a dasha somewhere. Any help would be very greatfully appreciated.

My grandfather, Edward Rood, was >from Tomaspol, came through England, sailed
on the Canopic to Boston and settled in Chelsea. I am trying to find out
more about his town, Tomaspol, and his family. He said for many years that
the spelling of his last name was not changed when he came here. His father
started a shul in Chelsea, but I do not remember the name of it. I believe
it is now a church.

I would like to know more about his family if I can, so I am reaching out to
anyone who might know about Tomaspol. Thank you

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Finding Passengers from South America to NYC on Steve Morse's website #general

Ellen & Sal Barbieri <elsal@...>

On www.stevemorse.org Ellis Island Gold Form:

I recently found an Italian who was no where to be found entering NY. Since
I know many went back & forth to South America, I entered last residence Rio
de Janiero & ethnicity Italian & found him.

I did a sampling of last res: Rio de Janiero & ethnicity Russian - 47
passengers.
ex. # 19 on index GUERHMAN, Benzion. All 4 passengers with him listed race:
Hebrew, gives names & addresses of Jews left in Rio & persons going to.

from sampling of last res: Buenos Aires & ethnicity Lithuanian - 68
passengers
Passenger RIKERTIENE, Zelma on index listed race: Hebrew with 16 others on
page listed race: Hebrew.
last res: Buenos Aires & ethnicity Russian - 3,240 passengers

While looking for the Italian, I noticed the following ethnicities:
Portugese, Hungarian, German, Austrian, Holland, Barbados, Syria, Turkey,
Roumania, France, Canada, Greece, Sweden, England, Bulgaria, Lithuania,
Bavaria, Spain, Armenia. I found a fairly large number of transposed first &
surnames, so scanning the index is better than looking up individual names.
Also, lots of misspelled names, so best to scan index or use name
sounds-like.

You can enter other ports: La Plata, Argentina; Sao Paolo, Brazil; Santos,
Brazil
Manifests after 1906 give place of birth in Europe. Think we may be
surprised to find relatives who unbeknownst to us were in South America.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Re: Question regarding Geni family trees #general

Zev Griner <zgriner@...>

As with any genealogy/social site, you must remember to manage the
privacy settings. Geni's privacy lets you define what you consider
"family" beyond your immediately family, as well as set what others
can see depending on their relationship with you.

Zev Griner

Because I had seen possible connections to my own family on Geni,I decided
to start a tree myself, putting about 50 of my ancestors' names etc.

I use Geni as well and have been quite happy with it until now. I do agree
that the new management procedures are wrong and don't update so much
anymore there for that reason.

IMO, if someone is looking to share a tree, then ancestry.com is a wonderful
place. You can invite whomever you would like to be part of your tree and
can give them one of three management options, one of which being only able
to view, but not make changes. This allows me to share my tree with anyone I
would like, but at my choosing as I can make the tree private and also not
have to worry that changes I do not approve will be made. And now that the
Jewish records are on ancestry as well, it will find possible matches for
you to review that you may have missed on your own.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Alfred LEOPOLD Son of Marta nee ZELLER #general

Linda Shefler

According to a Page of Testimony he submitted and some vague family
information, Alfred LEOPOLD, son of Unknown LEOPOLD and Marta ZELLER
survived the war. He *might* have spent the war in Norway.

Some other vague bits of information include that he *might* have also been
known as Albrecht, and he *might* have had a brother. His mother was born
in 1882 in Zuentersbach, Hessen, Germany, so just to give you a time
reference, I'm guessing he was born sometime about 1910.

If anyone is aware of this family please get in touch with me privately.

Many thanks.

lived in the same house in Bridgeport.

I am looking for information about their earlier years in this country.

Other names are Gordon and Wexler, who came >from Poland, near Vilna.
