Is anyone planning to go to Kew anytime soon?

I'd like to get more information about a set of records (reference ED 21/11530)
concerning the Morning Lane Council School (Hackney).

If so, please contact me privately.

Thanks

Dear Dan,

If the word "saudek" appears only in the records of boys, than it may very likely be the word "sandek,"
which is like a godfather. A sandek holds the infant boy down during circumcision. Typically a sandek is a
close relative of the parents and it is an honor to be selected as a sandek. Sometimes, the sandek sponsors
the celebratory meal after the bris.

The name of the sandeks appears in some circumcision ledgers along with the baby's and the father's
Hebrew names, but not in all ledgers. The most thorough circumcision ledgers may identify the familial
relationship of the sandek to the baby's father: father, father-in-law, brother, brother-in-law, etc.

It was a big surprise to discover that word on the birth register for my
grand father Josef ROSENBERG born in Cernovici. His 3 siblings were called
SHAPIRA and it seems they all had the same father.
Could you send me Daniela Torsh's message about the Familianten laws?

Thank you!

Most probably "sandek" >from the Hebrew "sandak" -- the person who holds =
the male infant on his knees during the circumcision. A role often =
given to the child's grandfather, and sometime to other honored members =
in the family or community. A sandak has a special relationship to the =
baby, somewhat similar in a way to a godfather.
The movie "The Godfather" was called "Ha (the) Sandak" in Hebrew.

Dear All,

I've received the answer and now know what the role my grandmother played
in the play.

The general consensus is that the Yiddish "Baleboste fun a tey-shtibl"
translates to THE OWNER OF THE TEA-HOUSE or TEA ROOM in English.

Several people added some additional translation ideas and nuances to the
phrase.

Thank you all so much for your much appreciated help! I've tried to thank
each of you individually and hope I didn't miss anyone.

Dear Friends

My great grandfather, Eliezer Sobel, appears in JRI-Poland Records by
three names: Luser Sobel, Leiser Abraham Sobel and Abraham Elusom Sobel.
All were married to the same wife so I had come to the conclusion that
this was the same person. I could not find the name Elusom anywhere in
JRI-Poland or the internet.

Does anybody know what does the name Elusom mean and what is its source?

Yours Sincerely

Polangen (Palanga) Vital Records 1922-39 #lithuania

Hi Everyone,

Exciting news for anyone with an interest in Polangen (Palanga)!

Polangen (Palanga) Vital Records for the years 1922-39 have now been located
at the Lithuanian Archives. (Records prior to 1923 tend to be found in
the Latvian Archives; records after about 1922 tend to be found in the
Lithuanian Archives. >from what I can understand, this is because Polangen
moved >from being under the jurisdiction of Courland to that of Lithuania
c.1923.

Early information about the Vital Records reveals a list of surnames
covering 121 death records and 627 marriage records (about 310-350
marriages). As always, people came not only >from Polangen but from
surrounding towns as well.

The List of surnames plus details of how to get further information is
now freely available at http://telsiai.shutterfly.com/. Simply scroll down
to the bottom of the page and click on this link to see the complete list of
surnames: "TEL-PAL-1922-1939- SURNAME LIST.xls". If you think your family
is amongst these it would be great to hear >from you!

Hello all;
I joined this group today and have gotten my welcome email.
My grandmother is a mystery to me. I know she was Hungarian and
according to my Dad lived in Maramos (I don't understand what the
"Bereg" or the "Sighnet" is...and she lived in the "transylvania
region. I cannot find a town where the "Kleins" actually lived so
do not know if this is the group I need to join.

All I know about Rosie Klein is her Dad's name was Moritz (Choritz)
and her mother's name was Hany or Fany Heisler Klein (gotten >from her
marriage certificate in NYC) Her :intent papers say she was >from Berek
Munich Hungary. (I have translated to Bereg Monkach Hungary)

Her intent papers say she came to US on the SS Varrow on June 11, 1887
via Bremen. I have never been able to find this ship or an arrival on
this date to NY.

She married Marcus Merling in NYC Dec 1895 and they had Rachel, Bernard
(died as child) and my father Morris (Murray). they lived on the lower east
side and rolled cigars for a living. Marcus died in 1910 and is in a pauper's
grave. I know there is family in Montreal but they seem to know very little.
If anyone can find any "insight" in how I can further my research I
would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Maxine Potchinsky

I've posted an excerpt of a page >from Lithuania birth records >from 1875 recording
the birth of Idel Kaplan. It is on ViewMate at the following address:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=23176.
I would appreciate a direct translation of the handwritten Russian text.
To assist in the translation, I have also posted, as a separate image, the complete
top half of the page containing this entry, showing the column headings. It is on
ViewMate at the following address:

Finally, I have posted a third image showing the notation (by the Rabbi?) at the
bottom of the same page. I would also like a direct translation of this notation.
It is on ViewMate at:
