Hi All,

By sheer coincidence the same day last week that I posted the history of my
g-g-g-grandmother Johanna Kohn née Müller to the H-SIG, a photograph of her
tombstone was posted on the blog of the Österreichischen Jüdischen Museums:
http://www.ojm.at/blog/2010/05/13/kohn-hendl-26-maerz-1884/

The tombstone no longer exists so this was an unexpected find. A nearly
complete translation of the inscription follows:

Hendl Kohn
Her soul deported in the city of Baden on Wednesday the day before Rosh
Kodesh Nissan. She was brought here to be buried with her fathers on
Thursday 5644. Here lies the widow, modest and respectable. A woman of
valor, Mrs. Hendl. May peace be upon her, the wife of the precious honorable
Avraham Kohn Z?L. She was a businesswoman to bring sustenance to her
children, young orphans after the death of her husband when she was in her
youth. She gave >from her bread to the poor. And to the destitute, she
stretched out her hand. Her ways were ways of pleasantness and awe of God
was her path. She guided her children to go in the path of the awe of God, .
Her children will arise and praise her and in the gates they will also
praise her actions, all that knew her. To the mount of God she went up to
reap the fruit of her actions. Her soul will rest in the shadow in Eden with
her ancestors until the time of the coming of the righteous messiah. The
earth will cover her glory and beauty >from before our eyes. The name of her
mother is Zelda.

Thank you to all who wrote to me after my original posting.

Best,
Carole Garbuny Vogel

Finding Morris COHEN #general

Rita

I have been on a seemingly impossible mission. I am trying to locate Morris
COHEN...haha or rather the descendants of.

In 1910 my great grandfather ,who lived in UK, visited his brother-in-law
Morris Cohen, who resided at 209 E99th St New York.
I have found Morris Cohen aged 45 ,residing at 209 E99th St,New York in 1910
census.
His wife is listed as Letta aged 40,they had 5 children. Abraham aged 18
Lena aged 16,Charles aged 13,Harry aged 11 & Louis aged 10.
All were born in Russia. Morris arrived in US in 1900 & his wife & family in
1905. Morris's occupation is roofer.

I have tried to find all of these people after 1910 but it seems like
mission impossible.

Is there anyone out there who have this family in their tree ?
I would like to know in what respect was he a brother-in-law, what is the
connection.
I have traced all of my great grandfathers descendants through to the
present time ,also his sister & her descendants all in UK.
However can not find them prior to UK.
Hoping the Cohen's can maybe supply some helpful information.

I strongly suspect that Cohen is not their original name as I cannot find
Immigration for any of them under the name Cohen.

Please respond privately.

Researching ,Chemerofsky,Shamrofsky (& variants) & Levitski ; Russia
possibly Slonim,Belarus.

Viewmate: Identify picture in New Zealand & Polish to English translation of birth document #general

Mady Land <madyland@...>

Hello everyone,
I've posted two items on Viewmate:

The first is a photo I found in my grandmother's album:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=15404

My grandfather Max Land(schneider), a bookbinder and his brother Charles,
ladies tailor, went >from Plock, Poland to New Zealand, in the early 1900s. I
believe Max is in the middle of this group, with black hair, bowler hat,
mustache and pipe. Does anyone know about an "Athletic Park" in Wellington,
NZ (per the sign), if it still exists, where it's located, or who this group
of men might be? I believe the sign is dated 1908, but not sure, as Max came
to New York in 1907.

The second is a birth document in Polish which I would appreciate translated
into English:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=15406

I'm looking for all possible details about Akt#219, the birth of Sura Prywa
ZYLBERSZTEIN, registered in 1867, to confirm if she is my great-grandmother
(mother of the above "Max LANDSCHNEIDER"/Aron Mordka Landsznejder of Plock.
The name has always been referred to as "Sara Silver", because the family
was in the silver business, but it could have been any variation such as
Zilberman, Zylberberg, etc. Would like to know if it is a late registration
and if the birth is actually years earlier. Also the details about parents
and witnesses: names, ages, occupations, where living etc.

Thank you so much for any details.

Thank You and Success Story #general

Lynne Schneider

Dear Genners,
Last week I posted a question regarding the very little information
I had about my paternal great grandmother and my grandmother's sister. I
received many replies with excellent suggestions as to how I could continue
to search and I hope I did not forget to thank each Genner personally. Since
the information has been so good I felt a public thank you was in order. In
particular the assistance I received >from Zeev Sela and Shaul Sharoni has
provided me with a success story, proving that one should never give up the
search.
This is my story: Zeev's and Shaul's efforts uncovered Pages
of Testimony given by my grandmother's sister for their brother whom no one
in the family here in the US thought lived beyond young adulthood. The POTs
confirmed that he married, had at least 2 children (one of whom also submitted
a POT for him) and provided me with his date of death, gave the names of his
parents which confirmed to me that this Pinchas is my grandmother's brother.
Also, at their suggestion I checked JGFF again for Orinin, Ukraine, and found
another researcher looking for SIPERSTEIN,contacted him and his response has
convinced me that we are family. This world can be a beautiful place.
Again, my most profound thanks to all the kind Genners who
take the time to answer posted questions and who go above and beyond to help.
