JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

ALENIKOFF (Vitebsk/NY/Cuba/Israel?)

Myree Mueller <kmueller@...>
Dear All,
I have had an update on my tree (after some 22 years of looking) including (at last) a name for great grandfather and the news that there was a fourth child of his so am sending out a new appeal for information. I am researching ALENIKOFF/ALEINIKOFF originally >from Vitebsk, Belarus. My great grandfather is now unveiled as Zalmin ALEINIKOFF (as spelt on his daughter's wedding certificate). his children were.... Milly b. 1888 (ended up in London, married to a BOROVITCH and their descendants have changed their names variously to Boris, Bradley, etc. Milly married for a second time as a widow aged 74 and it is >from that certificate which I got a copy of the other day which shows the father being Zalmin ALEINIKOFF) Phillip Solomon b. 1891 (ended up in New York with his wife Tillie at the beginning of the 20th century) Lipa b. 1898 (ended up living in Cuba, at least in 1940 with wife Cila - we only learned of his existence recently. Could be they had a son (maybe daugther, maybe more issue) but I'm having trouble tracking any information - I also wonder if any descendants went to Israel?) Haia S. b. 14 September 1902 my grandmother (ended up in Shanghai and then New York). She was born ALENIKOFF and then when in Shanghai she was calling herself Clara BLUESTEIN who married my grandfather MULLER/MUELLER. They divorced and in 1950 she emigrated to New York - first to her brother Phillip. Interestingly her name on the ship's manifest was Haia S. BLUESTEIN. USICS service was taken up and they found her in the indexes for alien registration but subsequent search of actual file deems it to be lost or destroyed. I have no clues whatsoever as to what happened to her after 1950 and it is said she may have married again. Considering the name Lipa only came up in recent months, I wonder if there were more children between Philip and Lipa or indeed after Haia. Regards, Koko Mueller Hong Kong

Researching DRIBIN and SELIKOWITZ families in USA
#general
Gerard Xavier <dak.sene07@...>
Dear all
I'm French, working actually for a Swiss NGO in Senegal. My grandfather, Shulem DRIBIN (DRIBINS) was born in Kretinga, Lithuania, abt 1875 and was son of Gutman DRIBIN. My grandmother, Taube (or Taube-Teckla) SELIKOWITZ was born in Skuodas, Lithuania, in 1879. They where settled in Libau, Latvia, at the end of the 19th century or very beginning of the 20th. They had 5 children there. One of them, Gita (twin sister of Wulf) was born in 14 august 1905 and was my mother. My grandfather died in December 1928 in Libau. My grandmother and a most of the family members where killed by the Nazis between 1941 and 1945, in the vicinity of Libau, in Auschwitz or in the Strutthof concentration camp. My mother and her sister Fruma where in France at the time of the WWII, that's why they survived. I know that members of the DRIBIN and SELIKOWITZ families emigrated >from Lithuania and Latvia to the USA, but I have very few informations. I just discovered on Ancestry.com that a Sarah DRIBIN, 69, widow, arrived in Ellis Island >from Libau on the "Polonia" in 1st December 1921 to join her son. She gave the address of an other son in Libau : Sholem DRIBIN, Juliannenstr. 24. So, this Sarah could be my great-grandmother. Thank you in advance for any information about the DRIBIN and/or SELIKOWITZ families. Gerard XAVIER Dakar, Senegal

Contact Information for Rivkah Kreinovitz-Shnaider
#general
Marcy Greene
Just wondering if anybody knows where I can contact Rivkah Kreinovitz-Shnaider
who supplied photographs to the JewishGen ShtetLinks Page for (Tavrig) Taurage, Lithuania. The photographs were of the last class of the Hebrew pro gymnasium (1940) and the graduating class of the Hebrew elementary school in Tavrig (1936-37). Along with Rivkah Kreinovitz-Shnaider,there is a picture of Sonia SHLOMOVITZ who I believe is related to me. Hoping to speak with Rivkah Kreinovitz-Shnaider to find out some information on my SHLOMOVITZ family, as well as, to find out about Sonia SHLOMOVITZ. If any one knows how I can contact any of Rivkah Kreiner-Shnaider's immediate family that too would be of great assistance. Any help would be kindly appreciated. Some of my SHLOMOVITZ family perished in the Taurage District of Lithuania during the Holocaust and I would very much like to speak with Rivkah or someone in her family to see if she would be able to tell me what happened to other members of the family in Lithuania. Thank you everybody so much for taking the time to read my letter and looking forward to hearing >from you when you get a chance. All the best and Shana Tova to everybody.
