Dear Researchers:

I misspelled the surname in my posting and apologize to you all.
The family name is EVEL in the Rodomysl, Kiev area in Ukraine.
Perhaps someone has a copy of Beider's book of Surnames in Russia
and can look this up for me.

Thank you so much!

Vienna 1930-1932: circumcision and baptism #general

Odeda Zlotnick

I am submitting this question in both the JewishGen SIG list, and
the Austria-Czech one.

I have discovered through a family member that one of my
grandmother's 2nd cousins in Vienna married a Roman Catholic
woman in 1930, yet his sons, born in 1931 - 1932 are
circumcised. I find that surprising, since they are not Jewish
according to the Halakha.

Does anyone know if any boys at all were circumcised even when
not Jewish then? Why, in a city that was growing more and more
anti-Semitic, would a man have his sons circumcised? Would Any mohel
do it? Wouldn't that making the the boys Jewish? Would this be
registered anywhere?

The father's marriage was registered (took place? "Eltern
getraut am XX.XX. 1930 in Wien, Magistrat") in the Viennese
magistrat". Does that preclude the possibility that the wife had
converted to Judaism?

3 days after the Anschluss one of the boys (I don't yet know
about the other) was baptized. Would it be a normal procedure to
baptize ("nach roemisch-katolischem rictus getauft wuerde") a six
year old? Is it a coincidence that it took place so close to the
anschluss, or can that be seen as an attempt to protect the
children?

Thank you

Odeda Zlotnick

Seeking Stories from Jewish Refugees Who Came through Angel Island (US) #general

janicemsj@...

The Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) promotes a
greater understanding of Pacific Coast immigration and its role in
shaping America's past, present, and future. Currently, AIISF is
asking for help in locating Jewish refugees who came to San Francisco
in the late 1930's and 1940, and their descendants.

AIISF hosts a database (http://aiisf.org/history/ai-jewish-refugees)
with information about 132 Jewish immigrants who were processed at
Angel Island Immigration Station. The database was compiled by
volunteers who reviewed files at the National Archives branch in San
Bruno, California. Please contact AIISF at the e-mail address or
phone number listed on the Web site if you recognize any of the
individuals listed in the database. AIISF would like to interview the
individuals or their descendants in order to get their full stories.

Perevelka (sp?) #general

Rita Chernoff <ritachernoff@...>

I am trying to locate a village called Perevelka. The spelling is how it
sounded not what it really is/was. All I know is that the village is
supposed to be in the Ternopol Oblast and the Pidhaitskyi Raion. The
administrative centre was Pidhaitsi. I realize that this is a mixture of
languages but this is all I have.

I did locate a village called Peredelka but this one is in Belaruse and
is too far East of where this other one is supposed to be.

Can anyone help? Thank you so much
