Research in Belgrade for Eugenie NEUMANN and Leopold TREUER #austria-czech

Dana Dimitriu

Good evening,

I am trying to find someone in Belgrade who can help me with a bit of research there.

My great-grandmother's sister Eugenie NEUMANN and her husband Leopold TREUER moved >from Vienna to Belgrade, Gracanicka 12, in autumn 1938. Eugenie's younger brother, Rudolf, mentions in his memoirs that Eugenie was killed in April 1941 during the bombing of Belgrade by the Germans. At this point in time, Rudolf was with the Polish Forces in the United Kingdom - but he had probably had constant contact with Eugenie and her husband because he fled >from Poland in 1939 via Belgrade.
This is the reason for my assumption that Leopold TREUER survived the bombing and notified Rudolf of Eugenie's death - which in turn is why I am assuming that Eugenie must have been buried somewhere in Belgrade.

My attemps to find out more about the fate of Leopold TREUER or Eugenie have been very modest so far. I have written - and received responses - >from the Jewish Museum in Belgrade and the Belgrade Archives - but they did not find any information about the people I am researching. I have also written to the Jewish Community, but did not receive any reply.

If you can recommend someone who could research the local Jewish cemeteries, perhaps the local municipal archives for a grave / death certificate, possibly police registration (similar to the ones I have seen in Vienna and Prague), I would be very grateful.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Kind regards,

Dana Dimitriu

Jewish Cemetery Bucharest, Sos. Giurgiului - Indexes #romania

Dana Dimitriu

Hello everybody,

At the Jewish Cemetery in Bucharest, Sos. Giurgiului, there
exist indexed registers of people buried there.
I am not 100% sure but I think these registers are complete.
These registers contain:
1. name of deceased
2. date of death
3. number of death certificate
4. city district which issued the certificate
5. group, row and plot numbers of the grave
6. amount paid for grave
7. name of cemetery - i.e. it appears that one can find entries
for other cemeteries as well, not only for that in Sos. Giurgiului.
(Note: I know of two other cemeteries, both of which seem to be
quite well kept)

With the information in 3 and 4 you can then request a death
certificate which might give you that little bit of additional
information - birth place, birth date, names of parents.

I would be willing to put some work into transcribing these indexes.
I do not live in Bucharest so cannot go there myself but I speak
Romanian and when I had one grave repaired had a contact at the cemetery.
I did ask about digitizing these records, he was a bit evasive and
referred me to the community. I dare say they might be expecting some
money for doing us this favour ... even though I pointed out that if we
put these indexes online on JOWBR, they will probably have more people
interested in finding the graves of their ancestors and repairing them.
{The old part of the cemetery is really in a sorry state, the only
reasonable season to go there is winter because in summer it is a
jungle and difficult to get through. Lots of beautiful stones toppled
or broken because of this. And the neighburhood does not help - there
are lots of gypsies around and all metal things in the cemetery get
stolen all the time - including sewer lids, metal plates indicating
rows, and once even the cemetery gates (luckily these were recovered
from the scrap iron market which is just around the corner - the
merchant realized what these were and brought them back).

So my question is: does anyone of this group have contact with the
Jewish community in Bucharest and can address this topic? In my eyes,
the easiest way would be to take digital snapshots of the registers -
microfilms would be nice but I am assuming that is costly and I have
no idea what equipment is required and if it is available - the
Mormons have only recently received permission for microfilming vital
records in Romania so it might take ages before they get there.

All the best,

Dana

Robert MAYER Heidleberg New York 1868-1960 #germany

Greetings,
For more than 25 years I tried, without success, to find out what happened
to my distant cousin Robert MAYER son of Leopold MAYER, owner of
a well known cloth shop at Leopoldstrasse 16 today Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage,
Heidelberg, Germany.

Robert MAYER was born in Heidelberg on 15 November 1868 and
the only information I had that he was probably abble to escape to
America via Switzerland.

I received yesterday my order of the new book of Norbert GIOVANNINI,
Claudia RINK and Franck MORAW on the Jews of Heidelberg 1933-1945, title
is Erinnern, Bewahren, Gedenken Die Judischen Einwohner Heidelberg
und ihre Angehorigen 1933-1945.

This book shows that Robert MAYER died in New York on 29 February 1960, his
wife (I thought he was bachelor) Elisabeth HEILBRUNN of Erfurt died in
New York on 8 november 1948.

They had two sons, Alfred Leopold MAYER
born in Heidelberg on 18 september 1905 and Peter Carl Friedrich Julius
MAYER born in Heidelberg on 9 july 1910, they both get to New York in
late 1930.

Does anyone have any information on relatives of above sons ?

Many thanks, Andre Convers, Louveciennes - France andreconvers@gmail.com

Hello Everybody,
For all those interested in Jewish families >from Prague and Cracow,
immigrating to Antwerp, there is a very interesting book about the FALKENAU
and ADLER families over a period of 75 years >from 1875 to 1950.
It was written by Rene Guy Falkenau and includes details of a larger number
of members of the family, in Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Singapore. The book
is available in Amazon's search engine.
I have no financial interests neither with the author, neither with the
publisher.

(USA): Shoah: Visual History Foundation - extraordinary resource #general

Carol Raspler

The USHMM (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum) is just one of 30
repositories containing the video interviews of 52,000 Shoah survivors.
Those videos contain 1.2 million names.

For those of you attending the Genealogy Conference in Washington this
August 14-19, I urge you to go to the Museum (they have many computer
terminals available to you) and type a name into the Foundation website.
You may find information very pertinent to your genealogy searches.

And if you are not attending the Conference, you may be surprised to learn
that you live close to one of the 29 remaining repositories. This tool is
invaluable.

http://www.shoahfoundation.org/

USC (Univ. of Southern California, Dornsife College) holds the principal
repository.

Good luck to all,

Researching descendants of people from Vienna #general

Hi Genners

I just returned >from a trip to Vienna where I found a lot of
information concerning my mother's family, into Archives of IKG.
Many thanks to Mr. Eckstein, who has finally provided answers to some
questions who they took my head since 6 years, without I can
advancing.

In fact in 2006 I was looking for my ggfather's siblings, Rektor Jozsef
(b. march 25, 1856 in Szent Yohann, now Moravsk). He was married to
Josefa Zilzer in Budapest, then they came to Vienna where was born
my grandmother.

After a few minutes searching on his computer, Mr. E. gave me a list
with the names of my ggfather's brothers, the maiden name of each wife
and the names of their respective children.

Mr. E. also given me the offspring of Adolf KILLER (maiden name of
side of my ggmother Sonnenfeld) for who my research was also
unsuccessful since 2006.

My question: for the public are there an internet link to find the
descendants of a person, especially for people living in Vienna, when
we only write the name and surname into the computer ?

I would appreciate to know if this link exists for other countries

Many thanks for your reply

Hello, I have been researching for a few years and have been
successful in finding many family members, both living and gone.
I have a conundrum that I cannot solve. My maternal great-grandparents
arrived in NYC in 1905 or 1906. I HAD found the correct information
in 2008, but my computer crashed and the backup did not copy the
information >from my FTM software. I have searched the Ellis Island
site many times since and cannot locate the information again. The
names are Saul Morris Kazanofsky, Chana Kazanofsky, Sadie or Shaine
Bluma and Zelda Kazanofsky. I remember that it was spelled
differently. His naturalization papers indicate they were on the
"Umbria" that left Liverpool and entered the USA on June 2, 1906.
You would think it would be easy, but I cannot find anything.
Any suggestions would be Greatly appreciated.
