Hi all,

I will be putting a ShtetLinks site together for the town of Skole
soon. This is where my maternal grandmother was born and
lived with her family. Her maiden name was Greenberg (or
Grunberg).

I haven't visited (yet) and would love to hear >from others who
are familiar with the area or have ancestors >from there as well.
I would love to see photos if at all possible.

Thank you,
Stuart UNGAR

Hi,

Could someone kindly let me know what information is contained in
Meorei Galicia about the BRAF (BRIEF) and PARNES families?

I'd really appreciate it as the closest copy of the books to me is over
150 miles away.

This is cross-posted on Gesher Galicia, RavSIG, and JewishGen
Discussion Group.

Best Regards,

Survivors in Holland #general

Lande

In 1945-1947, the Centraal Registratiebureau voor Joden in Amsterdam compiled a
list of Jewish survivors in Holland, and these lists were published by the Jewish
Historical Museum.

JewishGen volunteers compiled the names on these lists into a single database --
24,163 names. In many cases the listings include the place of birth or former
residence of an individual and these include hundreds of listings of individuals
from non-Dutch cities and towns, primarily Germany. This may seem surprising at
first but Allied policy at the time was to return survivors to the place that they
had been arrested or hiding so that foreign Jews who were resident in Holland or
who had escaped to Holland and survived were sent/listed there. Of course, this
did not mean that they remained there but the list is a good starting point for
looking for survivor relatives.

Please be patient and wait for the list to appear on JewishGen. It is due to
appear before the August conference.

A research tool #general

I was looking for info on a Samuel SCILKEN. He had worked with my grandfather,
Sigmund BALTER when my grandfather worked at Reliable Glove in New York City. His
name was on my grandfather's papers as well as someone who had known him over 10
years. Anyway, on a whim I looked under books in Google and used Samuel SCILKEN's
name. There is an article that applies to them in the Glovers Review, Volume 18. Who
knew!! It even says Sig. BALTER is now managing the factory. I didn't even know there
was a Glover's Review. So look outside the box for clues.

Re: Photography studio in Mogilev Podolsky ca 1900? #general

Sarah Schneider <sarah@...>

My ggfather's brother, Jacob PEKAR, may have owned a photography studio in Mogilev
Podolsky during the period 1890-1904.

I'm wondering if anyone has family photos or postcards taken during that era which
might have a studio name or address stamped on the back, or any other ideas how I
might confirm this theory?

Thank you

My cousin went to Brazil in 1937. Now what? #hungary

d_long@...

I recently returned >from a trip to Hungary where my relatives told me
that a cousin, Iren MUNK (her maiden name) of Budapest, immigrated to
Brazil in 1937.

She was likely married before she left Hungary and possibly had a son in
Brazil. I don't know her married name, but it was likely that she
married in Ujpest around the mid 1930s.

I would appreciate advice on where to begin looking for this cousin.

Thanks!

Kudos to the hard working GerSIG workers #germany

Barbara Algaze

I think the GerSIG Directors should be publicly commended for
creating such a strong presence for our group at the upcoming Conference in
Washington, DC. as well as for their work during the year. I am very proud
to be a member of the GerSIG Group.

Who is working behind the scenes to make this such an active and
productive group?

Barbara Algaze, Los Angeles, California, Algaze3@gmail.com

MODERATOR NOTE: GerSIG's Conference and Event Coordinators are
Jeanette Rosenberg in London and Nancy Adelson near Seattle, Washington.
Barbara is quite right: They deserve kudos and thanks >from us all.
