Looking for descendants of Simon and Marco PESSO and Marco's wife Suzie #sephardic

Arye Barkai

Dear Genners,
A friend of mine, Tal RUSSO of Zichron Yaakov, Israel, is looking
for his possible cousins, descendants of his grand uncle, Marco
and Suzie PESSO, who immigrated to the Bronx >from Gallipoli or
Cannakale, Turkey about 1909 on the "Caroline," entering the USA
via Ellis Island.
Tal Russo obtained >from Ancestry.com the following information:
Marco was born January 16 1890 and died May 1975. For most of his
life he lived in the Bronx. He knows very little about Simon PESSO.
Marco PESSO's Social Security number was 132-16-2909, microfilm 1715,
line 28. He was married to Susie PESSO, SSN #061-52-0259, born April
15, 1894 and died Jan. 1977.
The couple lived on Marcie Place in the Bronx, near the Grand
Concourse. As a long-term Bronx resident, I know that nearby there
were two Sephardi synagogues, whose congregants came mostly >from
Greece and Turkey, until the early 1970s. I do not know what happened
to the synagogues' records if there were any.
Please contact me privately at my email, aryeb@hotmail.com.

Re: Finding G2c #dna

The group is rare in the general sense, but FTDNA has hundreds of G2c
folks. There is a group administrated by Ted Kandell
(tkandell@yahoo.com).

I think the issue is that many have not done the SNP backbone test,
and this is one of the sub-clades that ftdna insists on not guessing
at based on STR's (as they do with many other sub-clades). The bottom
line is that many are identified as "G", but if they match closely to
an identified G2c person, then they are almost surely G2c.

In fact, I can see >from the match list of one of my cousins, Leibish
Halpern, that you are on it, and must have many G2c matches as well
(he is >from the rabbinic HALPERN family, distributed all about
Europe, but mostly in Galician Ukraine >from 1700 to the
Holocaust). There's only relatively small chance that you share
ancestors with him during a time at which this rabbinic family had
already formed.

I am realizing how rare a sub group I am in. My family comes >from Vyetka
near Homel in Belarus and we have an oral history of being Sephardic. My
family name is Kopolow, Kopiloff ,Kopolovich, Kopelow. My haplotype is
G2c. Anyone else out there?

Plappergasse 1 #poland #danzig #gdansk #germany

Luuk Keunen <luuk.j.keunen@...>

Good afternoon,

Can anybody tell me if there was some kind of special function in the
building Plappergasse 1 around 1895 ? Or was it just a normal
appartment block/house? I have some clues that our ancestors who lived
there, didn't stay there for a very long time, so probably it was some
kind of short stay rental, or even an Inn where they rented a room.

Thanks in advance,

Best regards,

Newburgh, NY - Agudis Israel and Workman's Circle #general

Sherri Bobish

Dear genners,

I'm trying to find Ida FINGER who passed on in Newburgh, Orange
County, NY between 1900 & 1905.

I wrote to Temple Beth Jacob & they responsed that they have noone
named FINGER.

I wrote to Agudis Israel & they did not reply.

According to TBJ, Agudis Israel may also have records for an old
Workman's Circle Cem in Newburgh.

Any genners out there who have knowledge of Agudis Israel and/or
Workman's Circle Cem in Newburgh, and how to check their index?

Thank you,

Death date conundrum #general

david colman <davidcolman@...>

The simple answer to my question is that I am dealing with 2 completely
different people - however, the similarities are so striking that I find
it too incredible.

I have the Polish death record >from Szydlowiec of my great grandfather's
great grandfather, Michael ben Eliezer. His date of death is stated as
29 April 1857 which equates to 5 Iyar.

I know >from another source that both were Rabbis in Szydlowiec (and
Michael's death record confirms this)

The Jewishgen Online Worldwide Burial Registry has a picture of a
matzeivah in Szydlowiec for a Rabbi Michael, son of Rabbi Eliezer, died
5 Iyar...but 5 years later! The engraving on the stone is very legible

As I am sure you can all imagine, I would very much like to confirm that
I have a genuine photograph of my 4xgreat grandfather's matzeivah.

Any suggestions?

That would indicate that possibly Israel SHAMES (died 1929 in Chicago)
or Morris SHAMES (died 1927 in Chicago) are prime candidates. You could
check for online obituaries or newspapers and possibly find something.
You could also order their death certificates >from Cook County and learn
if they had been shot.

Good luck.

He was caught in the crossfire during one of Al Capone's shoot-outs in
Chicago or he was told by gang members to stop walking on the side-walk -
didn't understand the language, continued walking and was shot
Either way he died in the incident
