JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

I recently learned that my great-grandfather's sister, Rose, was in
vaudeville for several years, and was told to email this group in hopes someone may be able to direct me where I can find more information about her. Her name was Rose V. Shapiro. Her parents were both born in Romania. She was born 15 Jul 1889 in Philadelphia, lived in Chicago for several years, then in 1910 she was living in Los Angeles. She married Sam M. Stutz (who apparently eventually owned the Orpheum, Palace, and Hillcrest theatres in Los Angeles) on 19 May 1912 in Los Angeles. She married Herman J. Cohen on 9 Mar 1920 in Great Falls, Montana. She died 14 Nov 1967 in Los Angeles. I don't think she had any children. I don't know what she did in her act or how long she performed for. She lived in Los Angeles as far as I can tell. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! Tiffany Shapiro tiffany.r.shapiro@...

Phila. Jewish Exponent Obituary Database - looking for LEVY
#general
Jonathan Borchard <JonBorchard@...>
I was wondering if anyone has access to the The Philadelphia Jewish Exponent
Obituary Database as a relative of mine is apparently mentioned. If you have, is it possible to get me a copy? I am in London so cant visit Philadelphia or another library with access. His name was Barney J. LEVY I don't have a date of death but its after 1925. He was born London in 1860. His wife was Galla LEVY born London 1869 - no idea when she died but probably between 1910 and 1920. If there is an obituary for her would love a copy as well! They had two children - Joseph A. LEVY born Philadelphia November 1887. He might have been know under the name Josh? Leon C LEVY also born Philadelphia in February 1889. I don't know what happened to them after 1910 census when they were living with their parents and unmarried. If anyone knows how to trace them your help gratefully appreciated. Many thanks Jonathan Borchard, London MODERATOR NOTE: Private responses only, please, unless your comments are of general interest.

Re: Christine Usdin and volunteers

I am not going to wade into the whole debate on databases other than to say
we should be grateful for what we have and I think the idea of charging is totally against the spirit. However the issue of volunteers is a sore point because a lot of people talk a big game but when the time comes are not willing to truly give of their time or follow through on their promises. I realize people lead a busy life but the spirit is of helping each other. Christine's efforts are nothing short of wonderful because she has been so giving of her time. She has asked nothing in return >from anyone other than to use and enjoy the data. I tired to get a massive project completed of over 5,000 graves here in the USA of the Kurlander societies. I have the raw data, the pictures, the templates. On numerous occasions I asked for volunteers willing to spend their time looking at the pictures, translating the Hebrew >from the stones and proofing the data. Very very few people were willing to give of their time to do this task and others took CD's >from me of the data and were never heard >from again. Result I backburnered a massive amount of data. I spent a lot of time (and my own money) visiting the cemeteries, photographing the stones, getting copies of the plot maps, etc. and loading it to the data templates. Some day I will get back to it (I hope). This taught me an important lesson about being willing to share and support each other and doing what I can to contribute to the greater effort. It should not all be about taking or how much money can you give but it should be about being supportive and giving of time to help advance the greater good here. Allan Jordan

I would like to extend my appreciation for the many helpful suggestions I've received over the past several days; suggestions that I believe will help lead me to answers. Thank you all. Meler, Meller, Nuler Family
#lithuania
Joan Kramer
Hello,
I haven't had much luck in finding proof of my great great grandmother's maiden name. Her married name was Shifra Ella MELER, wife of Shlioma Haim MELER. He was the son of Mordkhel MELER , who was the son of Daniel MELER. I have found a record on Jewishgen which shows a Mordkhel NULER, with a son, Nechemiash NULER. Nechemiash's daughter was Shifra. But I don't know if that NULER family is the same as the Mordkhel MELER family. Does anyone have any information about the MELER and/or NULER families? Are they indeed the same family? I am also still trying to find information about the widow of my great uncle, Daniel MELLER, in South Africa. Her name was Dora RUBENSTEIN MELLER, and she is shown as the surviving spouse of Daniel MELLER when he died in December, 1918 in Johannesburg. Did Dora re-marry? Did she remain in South Africa? And what became of her and Daniel's two children: Solomon/Solly MELLER, born 1906, and Sophie MELLER, born 1910...both in Johannesburg? Did they stay in South Africa, marry and have children? And where is Dora MELLER buried? And where are Solly and Sophie buried? By the way, Daniel MELLER, was the youngest child of Shlioma Haim MELER and Shifra Ella. Daniel was born in about 1872 in Lithuania. He added an L to his last name when he emigrated to South Africa (SAR) and became a naturalized citizen of SAR. He died at age 46 and is buried at Braamfontein Cemetery in SAR. I have his Death Notice, Death Certificate, and many records about his business, which was picture framing. The business was called "MELLER and SHURE". (SHURE was his sister's husband, Harris SHURE, who was my maternal great grandfather.) I would appreciate hearing >from anyone who has any information about the MELER or MELLER or NULER families.
