The New York Public Library has a great collection of City photographs but I am
not sure how easy it would be to isolate a specific address.

The New York City Municipal Archives has the 1930s tax photos which were a picture
of each individual building in the City. I know it is not the exact time frame
you are looking for but it might give you something. The pictures can be ordered
via the mail (they are not inexpensive) or if you go to the Archives you can see
microfilmed copies of the pictures and you can print out a photocopy for a minimal
charge. They are not as good as original photos but the copies off the laser
printer sometimes come out fairly good depending on the quality of the original
photo.

Its a bit of an involved process to look up the building. You need the exact
address and the cross streets to start with. They you have to look that up on a
reference map which gives you the plot and then you go to the microfilm and search
out the specific picture. I have done this for people but I do ask for a fee to
cover the cost of my travel, etc.

Walter Greenspan

Stuart Ungar,

For pictures of what those locations looked liked then: Between 1939 and 1941
(and, again in the mid-1980s), NYC photographed every house and building in each
of the five boroughs:

http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/taxphotos/home.shtml

I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.

Hi Rony

Your email interests me as a the mother of a nursery friend of my daughter is of
Iranian Azeri descent; she had a Jewish grandfather originally >from Moscow but
ended up in Iranian/Persian Azerbiajan c.100 years ago - do you know if this was an
unusual or common journey?

Thanks

Searching WULKAN, Bernhard(t) #poland

Dennis Wulkan

Searching WULKAN, Bernhard(t). I only have sketchy information:
Born 1849 in Oswiecim. At some point he emigrated/moved to Vienna/St.
Polten.

Sons Ludwig and Feodor born in 1880, 1882 in St. Polten. He owned a
store in St. Polten--Bernhard and Sohne. Died in 1932 per obit notice
in the Neue Freie Presse.

So far I have searched the JRI-Poland databases and conducted a
comprehensive internet search. I have found no birth records or
records relating to his family.

I'm seeking information regarding Bernhardt's parents, siblings, and
family to trace family tree. Any help, clues, pointers are greatly
appreciated. Replies may be sent to me at:
dwulkan@comcast.net.

Best Regards,

Where in Lithuania did my grandfather marry? #lithuania

Mglevinson07@...

Dear Siggers:

I have a faint-ish photocopy of the second marriage of my paternal
grandfather, Simon/Shimel LEJZENZOHN/LEVENSON/LEVINSON in Spring
1904 to an Ayda Gittel, who was divorcee and who may have converted
to Judaism (at a previous date, it is believed). The marriage took
place in a place named Hay, Nun, Lamed, Lamed. Can anyone please
have a guess or let me know if they think they can work out where
the marriage took place? I say in Lithuania because the Ketubah
says "Ketubah" and that it was printed in Vilna (in Cyrillic script
underneath the Hebrew wording).

Many thanks for all or any help.

Michael LEVINSON, Southport, UK.

Searching: LEJZENZOHN/LEVENSON/LEVINSON, Lithuania.

Location: Potok Stani, gmini Potok, Yanov uyezd #general

Thanks to some kind folks who translated a birth and a death record I posted at
ViewMate, I now have the place where my great-grandparents were living in 1901-2.
However, I am having trouble finding it on a map or at JewishGen Town Finder. It is
given as "Potok Stani, gmini (community) Potok, Yanov uyezd" in Russia/Poland. The
death is in a hospital in Lublin and most family records indicate locations in Lublin
Gubernya, so this location should be somewhere in or near there. Is "Yanov" Janow?
Where else might Potok Stani be?

I have a WW 1 draft registration card >from my maternal grandfather, Julius
Eisenberg. It lists both his place of residence and place of employment at
the time. I am wondering if anyone in NYC can give me more information on
what the location is like now (and was like back then). Also, photos of how
these addresses look now and (I don't know if this is possible) but
photographs of those locations >from back then.
