Alan,

I am assuming, >from your email address, that you are in the UK. That will make
things much easier for you!

I find a Tilly Isbitt born 1908 who died in 1991 in Hendon...if you can get her
death certificate it may have her parents? names on it.

Name: Tilly Isbitt
Birth Date: 26 Dec 1908
Date of Registration: Aug 1991
Age at Death: 82
Registration district: Hendon
Inferred County: Middlesex
Volume: 13
Page: 431

as well as info on a Sydney Isbitt:

Birth Date: 29 Jun 1909
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1978
Age at Death: 68
Registration district: Westminster
Inferred County: London
Volume: 15
Page: 2591

I could not find a marriage for them. Nor could I find Tilly?s mother's death --
which probably would have her maiden name on it.However, I did find this:

Surname Given Name Age District Volume Page
Deaths Mar 1939
Hamburger Jacob 48 Rochford 4a 944

Per the United Synagogue website, a Jacob Hamburger is in the East Ham cemetery:
section K Row 7 Plot 416. Tilly's mother may be buried near him... and
cemetery records may indicate her parents' names.

I also did a search of the archives of the Jewish Chronicle -- you will find
info about the next 3 generations!

Her maiden name was BUCHBINDER (or variants such as Boekbinder). A sister married a Jacob HAMBURGER and they came to UK around 1910. The Hamburgers had a daughter Tilly Matilda, born in Russia in 1908 who married Sidney ISBITT
(originally Solomon ISBITSKY) in 1930.

My problem is - what was Tilly's mother's given name? I believe her father was
Nachum Leib Buchbinder
