Help translating Yiddish writings from Bucharest #romania

ViennaRoots

My Great Aunt Clara TABACZNIK-FEINSILBER wrote in Yiddish on the backs
of small photos, sent to my Grandfather Samson TABACZNIK(from
Rashkov, Russia/Moldova). She was living in Bucharest by 1929 at
least. Visited her brother in Vienna, too. I don't know when she
arrived there.

I've posted a photo plus the writings >from 2 photos, in Yiddish. Can
somebody possibly read them and translate for me? It might help me
verify some info or reference other relatives. For instance, I am
trying to trace 3 brothers who supposedly survived the War. I think
one of them also lived in Bucharest, as I've found "Israel TABACINIK"
in the Bucharest phonebooks, 50's to 70's. But I can't confirm he's
related, and don't know what else I can do at this point.

I have also recently found an address in Russian for another likely
brother, "Isaac TABACZNIK" in Kishinev around 1960... but don't know
how to look for him or descendants... have a photo of his nephew,
though!

These images can be found at:

FW: GRADNER / WAINSTAIN / GERSHCOWITZ #galicia

Dear Roy,

You posted an almost identical message on Dec. 30, 2011.
JewishGen guidelines require a minimum three-month wait
before a query is repeated and we request that you wait
even longer. Our readership changes very little in a few months
and it's boring for people to read the same messages
over and over.

Thank you.

Question :
Can you help me link-up the GRADNER'S originally >from Bialystok with either
the WAINSTAIN'S or GERSHCOWITZ' >from Poland (Tarnopol?) ?

The GRADNER's first emigrated to London (c 1890) then to South Africa.

Their son LOUIS became Mayor of Cape Town in 1933, as his son WALTER also
did later on.

Louis Gradner (1882-1955) was a 'cousin' of FANNY WAINSTAIN (nee
GERSHCOWITZ) born in London (1890-1975).

Her husband LAZARUS WAINSTAIN (1886-1964) originally came >from Poland.

How are the families linked?

Please reply to : roystar20@...

Many thanks

found at:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/28/arts/television/neil-hope-dies-at-35-degrassi-actor-whose-life-unraveled.html

This poor young soul, who died at only 35, was not recognized by the police
or the coroner at the boarding house where he was found on Nov. 25, 2007 and
so was buried the following March in a municipal cemetery.
His family only found out about his death recently.

So, this fellow's Death Certificate will never have his name unless the
family wants to pay a great deal of money to have it revised.

1795 Ostroh census photos - help with a couple of Russian & Polish words #general

Mel Werbach <mel@...>

JewishGen has almost completed translating the 1795 Ostroh Census - but we
need help in translating a few words >from Polish or Russian.

Czarist government took this census only 2 years after Ostroh was
transferred >from Poland to Russia in the Third (final) Division of Poland,
so it was written in Russian on the left page and again in Polish on
the right page. You therefore may be able to help if you think you may
recognize either the old Russian - or the old Polish - terms:
(The Polish word is listed here first and the Russian word second):-
mukowoz - mukovoz - possibly a flour peddler, "muka" means "flour" and
"wozit" means "to carry" or "to cart" so is it a person who carted flour?
- jarmolnik/jarmelnik - "master [...] zhidovskikh"

The translator cannot read the second word of this occupation in Russian
which translates as "master of Jewish ....."=
(Perhaps "maker of skull caps?")

You can view both the Russian and Polish versions of the original images

ROSENTHAL - COHEN London 1891 #latvia #courland

Hello

We all have our brick walls and mine is my great grandmother Jane COHEN.
All I know is that she came >from Courland, her Hebrew name was Sheina, her
father was Bentzion, mother unknown. She married Jack/ John Silver in London
in 1893. Family lore is that they met on the boat coming over. I have no
idea whether her parents came with her or even if she had any siblings.
I'm a fairly experienced researcher and have trawled all the usual sources
and have all the UK documents that I can find including the marriage
authorisation. I'm now re-checking to see if I have missed anything!

In the 1891 census there is a Jane COHEN described as cousin living with a
Samuel ROSENTHAL an Iron monger, living with his wife Goloa and their
children Hannah, Hyman and Abraham. If this ROSENTHAL family is familiar to
you please contact me so we can work out whether this may be my Jane COHEN

For years I had understood that my grandfather attended a Marist school in
the 1890's. Some years ago I made an abortive attempt to find out and just
recently a very successful one.

He attended the original Koch Street School in Jo'burg definitely in 1896
and probably in 1898 (initial only for first name). They maintain a record
of names and years based on 120 years of books but can offer no further
information.Interestingly a good many other Jewish boys names are listed
alongside that of my grandfather.

If you are seeking similar confirmation please email me direct, off-list,

Help with translations from a Russian postcard and maps in Hebrew or Yiddish #bessarabia

Can someone please translate this message in Russian c 1890 sent to Chava Spiwak

On both the front and back flyleaves of the Capresti Yizkor Book there are maps.
I am wondering if someone can tell me what the maps depict and translate the writing and,
for one map, the key. I am not sure if they are in Yiddish or Hebrew. The map >from the

GRUN ; GOLD ; MAURER ; STARYSOLER #general

Roy Star

My great-grandmother was Ruchel Kreince GRUN (1858-1936) married to
Chaim STARYSOLER (1856-1890) >from Tarnopol, Galicia.
She came to London with her 3 children (Nat, Ruby and Clara) after her
husband died c1891.
She stayed briefly with her sister Rebeka GRUN (1859-1901) and her husband
Max GOLD (1862-1919) and their family in London.
I have Ruchel (Rachel) father as Naftaly Hirsch GRUN with 2 different sets
of dates (1823-1879 and 1891-1970). The second set of dates are obviously
wrong, possibly belonging to a different Naftaly Hirsch Grun. I have her
mother as Leah MAURER (1878-?). On her UK ID card, Rachel gave her father as
Nathan GREEN. I do not know why she anglicised his name as I have no proof
that he ever came to London.
Can you clear this up for me and possibly give me brothers/sisters or
parents for Naftaly Hirsch GRUN?
I have dozens of other Grun's I have located, most >from Zbaraz, but cannot
link them up with my Tarnopol tree!

Please reply to :roystar20@...
