Let's Meet 7:00 pm Sunday 2/21/99 At the JCC or the DIA IN Detroit #hungary

Leatrager@...

Why didn't I think of this sooner??? On Sunday night at 7:00p.m. there is
going to be the last showing of the Documentary Film The Last Days. It is the
narrative of Holocaust Survivors through the Steven Spielberg Foundation, and
it refers to the deportation and murder of the Jews of Hungary and those
regions Hungary had occupied during W.W.II. Sidney Bolkosky did a review of
the movie in the Jewish News on pps.82-84, and it is also up for the Best
Documentary of 1999.
I will be leaving the JCC at 5:35pm on Sunday and would be delighted to drive
to the DIA and maybe hook up with those of you South OF Detroit. How about a
discussion afterwards at a coffee shop?
Just e-mail me and I will contact you tomorrow night.

Dear Friends,
Regarding the book of "Vanished communities in Hungary" I received a copy
yesterday >from the UC Berkley. It is a highly interesting book, involves
the Zemplen County communities with Jewish population before the war and
during the Holocaust period. Important reading to those with ancestry from
Zemplen County like myself.

Gabriela P. Svatos <gsvatos@...>

On the JewishGen Yizkor Translations page, there is a section headed
"Terezin". If you click on that, there are actually several lists for
Czechoslovak female survivors of both Terezin and Bergen-Belsen. Most of
the people appear to be born in Slovakia-also a great many in Munkacs.
Several surnames >from this group appear:

Spiro(va)
Zipser(ova)
Schonfeld(ova)
Marmorstein(ova)
Stark(ova)... etc.

LOEWY #hungary

Counsel17@...

I am still searching for any LOEWY connections. Not knowing the ancestral
home, it is quite difficult, and frustrating. However, earlier today, I spoke
with a distant cousin who says her family came >from Santa Ana in the
Carpathian mountain region. Does this town ring any bells? It doesn't sound
like any town I've ever heard of.

John Anderson,
Danbury, Ct

mod.- There was a prominent Loewy family >from Bardejov (Bartfa) Saris County, Slovakia. You can find more information about this family in Abraham Grussgot's Yizkor book on that town. There is also some information about Loewy in the Unheeded Cry written by Fuchs (recently discussed here). Survivors of this family now live in Los Angeles and Israel.LS

Dan Checkman <danc@...>

There is another way to get information on most residents of the US -
the library. Large city libraries will have at least 2 sources
available to you, one being the city directories dating back to
whenever, and the other being the newspapers (although Jewish obituaries
are difficult to find for certain segments of the population in the
early 1900s). The city directories are basically predecessors of the
phonebook, and may include such information as age, type of business,
ages of children, owner/renter status, etc. Another source that may be
available to you is the US Census records for any census up through 1920
(which will include birthplaces, as well as ages, etc.). >from all of
these sources, you should be able to figure out within a few years when
a relative's family came over >from Belarus.

There is a LONG side at Chatyn, about two city blocks long, with names of such
ghettos and concentration camps and each has a central marker, listing
thousands (as many as 800,000) dead.
I have pictures of this that I could post on the web if
there's interest.

I also have a picture of the monument in Minsk that was erected
in memory of the Jews killed in WW2. It's a very small monument
that's extremely difficult to find. But, someone puts fresh

Correction **Gerts as a given name, Lithuania 1800's #general

Maria Krane

Hello Again Genners,

Someone kindly pointed out (thank you) that I failed to state the time and
place for the name I am researching. That, I believe makes it difficult to
receive accurate responses. The given name I previously posted "Gerts,"
was found on the 1858 revision list >from the town of Vegery in Lithuania.
If anyone could help out with what other variation of this name there is,
I'd truly appreciate it. Thank you (as always).
