Nachal Dimah #rabbinic

Daniel Teitelbaum <djteitel@...>

Dear members of the RavSIG:
I am looking for an English translation (if one exists) of Nachal
Dimah. This work is a eulogy written by R. Baruch EPSTEIN for his
father in law, R. Elazar Moshe HOROWITZ of Pinsk. I am told and I have
read that in this work, there is mention of his family members. If
anyone has information about a possible English translation of this
work, I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know. Thank
you so much. Daniel TEITELBAUM, Raleigh, NC (djteitel@gmail.com)

More NY Searchable Cemetery Databases; Coney Island Notebook #general

Steven Lasky <steve725@...>

Greetings,

It has been brought to my attention that there are two more New York
searchable cemetery databases, both located in Brooklyn and non-sectarian,
i.e. the Evergreens Cemetery and Green-Wood Cemetery. You can find links to
both databases on my links page under "Searchable Cemetery Databases", at
http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/links.htm .

Also, I have updated my "Coney Island Notebook" exhibition, including more
turn-of-the-century photos of the Coney Island Amusement Park, as well as a
report of my recent visit there post-Sandy, along with three dozen photos of
the Boardwalk, rides, etc. that I took.
http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-coneyisland.htm . And besides this,
there are four interesting videos of Coney Island, filmed >from 1905 to the
1950s.

Court Files for Adolf Wolkofsky; Chicago, IL, ca. 1918 #general

Arnon Hershkovitz

Hello, Dear JG Colleagues.

I'd appreciate your advice on a court-related research, during which
we - a cousin of mine and myself - hit a brick wall.

Adolf/Adolph Aaron Wolkofsky (my great-great uncle; born 1870, Galati,
Romania, lived in Chicago, IL and in Brooklyn, NYC, died 1924 in
Brooklyn) was accused of some charges, among of which are: operating a
confidence game; larceny in connection with Illinois Loan Company; and
embezzling. He was held to a grand jury, and at least one of his court
files involved bankruptcy.

These details are reported in a series of Chicago Tribune and Chicago
Examiner articles dated early 1918. >from the articles, we know that
Adolf ran away >from Chicago to his sister in Brooklyn, NYC, where he
was arrested ans was brought to the court in Chicago, IL. State's
Attorney, Maclay Hoyne, opened the investigation against Adolph
Wolkofsky in January 1918.

Involved Parties in one or more of the court files include Adolf's
lawyer, Leonard Wissman; plaintiffs Louis Chavin and Adolph (Aaron)
Weiner; federal court Judge George A. Carpenter; municipal court Judge
John R. Newcomer; State's Attorney Maclay Hoyne; Assistant State's
Attorney Charles Chase; Assistant State's Attorney Max Biederman;
victim Mary Pauzamsky and her lawyer, Irving G. Zazove.

The court files of these cases might shed some new light on the family
history, as 3 of Adolf's children had testified against the other
plaintiffs, and as the very existence of a Brooklyn sister is still a
mystery.

Crucial to this story is the fact that Adolf's son was born in June
1920 (in Brooklyn), and that Adolf had lived as a free person in the
early 1920s (in Brooklyn). So, if he was jailed, it must have been for
a relatively short period of time.

Contacting the National Archives in Chicago, IL, had resulted in a
non-finding of any federal or state court file for Adolf. A query to
the Circuit Court of Cook County Archives had also resulted with a
non-finding.

So, the main question I'd like to address is: Where else could Adolf
Wolkofsky's court files be found?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Yours,
Arnon Hershkovitz

ViewMate request - Hungarian or Polish comment #general

Howard Fink <HowGen@...>

I've posted part of a vital record, probably in Hungarian, but maybe
it is Polish. I would like a translation. It is on ViewMate at the
following address:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM27612

The original record was the birth of Abroham DINTENFASZ on 12 December
1873 in Tarczal, Hungary. The part that I need translated is a comment
that was added later (since it includes a reference to 1902). His
parents are listed in the original record as Lajos and Feighe. This is
the only record of the twelve on this page that has a comment like this
squeezed into the right hand column. I'm sorry that I cannot also
display the entire page or record with it, but then this comment would
be just too tiny to read.
The record source is "Birth Records collected by Rabbis in Various
Countries", LDS microfilm 642959.

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.
Thank you very much,

Howard Fink

Searching CHAZANOVITCH, Belarus #belarus

Schelly Talalay Dardashti

To locate the ancestral village or shtetl, try to find the family members
on passenger manifests. As Richard mentioned below there were brothers
of his grandfather who came earlier and later, so there may be records of
one or more of them that can be located. Also look for naturalization
certificates which may indicate the exact town of origin.
Check the army registrations for old men as well for WWI.
These would be the minimum to start searching.

with best wishes

SEARCHING: TALALAI, TALALAY,TALALAJ, Mogilev/Vorotinshtina/Zaverezhye, Belarus.

"Subject: Searching CHAZANOVITCH, Belarus
From:
Richard Z Chesnoff

Dear Belarus Genners:
My grandfather immigrated to the US >from Belarus in around 1885. His name
was Berl CHANZANOVITCH (my transliteration) but he changed it to Bernard "Barney"
Chesnoff after he reached NY. His brothers who immigrated at earlier and later
dates changed their names to a variety of versions of Chazanovitch: Chestnov,
Chesney, Chessnoff, etc.
When I was young and would ask my grandfather where he was born, he
would say "Minsk Gebornya". I thought that was the name of his shtetl,
tl, and it was only when I was much later and he had died that I realized
that that meant Minsk Governate, and was of course the region, not the village.
Does anyone know what village our family came>from or how I can find out?
Thank you.
