ViewMate (brief) translation request - apparently Yiddish #general

Peter Lebensold <peterlebensold@...>

Dear Cousins:

Thanks to website http://jpress.org.il/view-english.asp , I've just
found a small advertisement -- for a business that belonged either
to my grandfather or a grand-uncle -- that appeared in a July 1911
edition of the Warsaw newspaper "Der Moment".

Some of the text is Polish, but I've just learned that most of the
upper part of the ad is in Yiddish (rather than Hebrew).

I would very much appreciate a comprehensive, word-for-word
translation of the ad's fewer than 20 words -- most likely a
description of the business (which I believe to have been the sale
of construction and/or roofing supplies).

The advertisement has been posted on ViewMate at the following
address ...

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM27906

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Thank you very much.

Descendants of Pinkus ISRAEL #general

Lois Cohen

My g grandfather Pinkus ISRAEL( b.abt. 1840 d.6/7/1912 in Baltimore)
immigrated >from Russia/Poland to Baltimore MD. His wife Bashce (Bessie)
Israel( b. abt. 1840 d.8/22/1913 in Baltimore) who arrived(1894) at a
different year than Pinkus stated the ship's manifest that she was from
Kremenitz and that she was coming to her husband. In the 1910 Baltimore
census Pinkus and Bessie stated this was the second marriage for both. I
could not find Pinkus or Bessie ISRAEL in the 1900 Baltimore census. The
Baltimore 1910 census had the names reversed. Pinkus was listed as Israel
PINKUS. Thus, Bessie was Bessie PINKUS.

My grandfather Jacob ISRAEL was a son of Pinkus ISRAEL. His mother may have
been Pinkus's first wife and that name may have been Louise.

Three relatives of Jacob ISRAEL immigrated >from Ostrolenko to Baltimore in
1906 and stated on the ship's manifest that they were going to Jacob ISRAEL.
Two of the people stated that Jacob ISRAEL was their brother.

In 1906, Morris ISRAEL( B abt. 1890) a brother to Jacob. I have found
Morris in the 1915 Baltimore City Directory living with Jacob and Jacob's
son Benjamin ISRAEL. Does anyone have information on Morris ISRAEL?

In 1906, Chawe ISRAEL (B. abt. 1888) a sister. Does anyone have
information on Chawe ISRAEL?

In 1906, Jose HARGOLIS ( probably should be MARGOLIS) B. abt. 1889 stated he
was a nephew to Jacob ISRAEL. Does anyone have information on Jose/Joseph?

Also, does anyone have information on Joseph ISRAEL? He may have been an
uncle or brother to Jacob ISRAEL. Joseph was living with the ISRAEL family
as listed in the Baltimore city directory of 1906...125 E. Exeter St.

Viewmate Image Kaunas Tablet of Jewish Communities -- Yiddish not Hebrew #general

Susan Goldsmith

Dear Jewish Gen and Litvak SIG:

I apologize for my misinterpretation. Thank you to all the Hebrew
and Yiddish mavens who explained that the Kaunas Choral Synagogue
Shoah Tablet is in Yiddish, not Hebrew as I had assumed, and that it
is not a list of names, but rather a list of Jewish communities and
the dates their members were killed.

I would be grateful if someone would please translate >from Yiddish to
English the names of the communities destroyed in the Shoah and the
dates of the aktions. I will then post the results for everyone's
information.

The photo is on ViewMate at the following address:

We visited the Jewish cemetery in Mad last week, and the graves have been numbered (in marker). Does anyone know if the graves in this cemetery have been indexed somewhere?

SELIG family from Bischofsheim - VIEW MATE #germany

Dear Genners,
we would like to find all possible information about our SELIG
family >from Bischofsheim (Germany).

We have found an old picture, taken in front of the SELIG house
in Bischofsheim. My grandmother wrote the names of these
persons at the back of the picture (taken in 1910-12).
However, some of them are difficult to read.

A copy of this photo can be found on viewmate:

Hoffmans in Prussia #germany

Vikki Williams <wombat_3071@...>

Hello,
I'm trying to research my great great grandparents - Charlotte Hoffman
and Julius Kleeberger. I know that Charlotte was born in Ellrich,
near Nordhausen, Prussia and that she and Julius migrated to
Melbourne, Australia (via Liverpool, England) in the 1850s.
There is a family story that suggests Charlotte was Jewish but
it has never been confirmed. Does anyone have any advice on how
I could go about obtaining more information?

Thanks for your help, Vikki Williams

Thanks for town identification #hungary

Thanks to Tomåť Lang, Elizabeth Long, and Gabriela Svatos for their
thorough and enlightening interpretation of the town name, registered
in a German-language Czech birth record of 1865 as "Vaagvetsch in
Ungarn." As I learned >from the three experts, the town is now in
Slovakia, called Å aÄža-VeÄ?a ("Vaag" = Vah river, "vetsch" = town VeÄ?a;
Å aÄža is the nearby larger town, formerly in Nyitra (Nitra) county in
Hungary.

Hats off to you, Gerhard, for informing us so quickly!

A major step, as this is an enormous collection. So far,
Baden-Wuerttemberg was the only state that had done similar things.
Stand by, though--I hear there's more to come soon >from other places.

It is a pity that direct links do not work on this website:

fill in "Gatermann" in the field Schnellsuche = Search. The first

for. To find the locality you are interested in follow the words Ort /
Gemeinde. Click on the arrow under "Details" on the right of the
specific place and on the next and last page on Media. And here at
last you see the desired films.

These Jewish registers for the 18th through 20th centuries are mainly
from the territories of Hessen-Kassel, Waldeck und Frankfurt, less are
from Hessen-Darmstadt, and none >from Nassau, where they did not exist.
