Jewish Records Indexing - Poland URL #general

Stanley Diamond

We are pleased to announce that effective immediately,
Jewish Records Indexing - Poland will be exclusively using
the jri-poland.org URL for all the pages on its website.

We recommend you change the bookmarks on all JRI-Poland
pages to insure that you quickly find the pages of interest.

Enter JRI-Poland through the homepage at www.jri-poland.org
if you want to see all current announcements.

The adoption of our own exclusive domain name/URL is an
additional effort to inform the entire Jewish genealogical
community that JRI-Poland is an independent organization
with its own administration, volunteers and fundraising.

"JewishGen.org" should no longer appear in the URL for
any JRI-Poland web pages. However, JRI-Poland continues
to be hosted by JewishGen and run on the JewishGen servers.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the JRI-Poland
web team of Howard Fink, Meira Puterman and Bryan Langer,
and JewishGen system administrator Gary Sandler for the
immense effort they have put in over the last month to make
this shift possible.

JRI-Poland Board member Alan Greenberg also helped with
his technical skills augmented by his knowledge of JRI-Poland
history.

Our appreciation is also extended to JewishGen's managing
director Warren Blatt for his support of this important move.

Dear Israel,

Have you considered looking at the sefarim (books) that have
"prenumeranten?" Beryl Kagan (Cohen, in Hebrew) compiled a book,
"Sefer Haprenumerantn" in 1975, that has names of towns and where
these towns appear as prenumeranten -- pre-subscriptions -- and the
people in those towns who paid for such subscriptions. I already looked
for you and for code #2410 for your town, there are quite a lot of books.
Then you would have to locate the books. Sometimes you may find them
on www.hebrewbooks.org. Prenumeranten are mostly located at the end
of a book. You can even find the Beryl Kagan book there as well. The
introduction is in Yiddish, but, very helpfully for the English speaker, at
the back of the book is an English Introduction and also a list of
referenced towns with their codes.

However, be forewarned as happened in one instance I was looking for.
It's possible that in some editions of a book, the prenumeranten may
have been omitted. So if Beryl Kagan says it should be there, try
finding another edition.

My thanks to Chaim Freedman who published an article in Avotaynu,
"Prenumeranten as a Source for Jewish Genealogists," in the Summer
1994 issue. Others may be interested in reading about this.
