Many thanks to all those who responded to my question about the DNA and
Cohanim. It was interesting to hear >from so many different viewpoints.
Some were skeptical and most felt there was scientific basis for passing on
the genes for so long. I appreciate the variety of responses.

KUPISKIS / ROKISKIS SIG MEETING #lithuania

MS ANN RABINOWITZ <PQUA32A@...>

I am posting this on behalf of Linda Cantor and myself to members of
the Kupiskis / Rokiskis SIGs. A meeting of our combined SIGs is
scheduled for the Summer Seminar. The meeting will be held on
Wednesday, August 11, 1999, at 12:30 - 1:45 P.M.

It would be appreciated if you would let me know if you will be
attending so that I will be able to plan adequately for handouts and
other materials. As in the past, my databases and new info that we
have received in the past year will accompany me to the session.

Our Kupiskis vital records for births, marriages and deaths should be
translated and computerized by the time of the meeting . . . the
births have just been finished and the deaths are already completed
and on our ShtetLink Site. The Kupiskis Benevolent Society of Cape
Town Addressbook Index has been finished and will be available. Our
index of the Rokiskis vital records may be available by that time as
well.

Please bring with you any data, photographs and family histories that
you would like to share and that would be able to go on our ShtetLink
Sites.

Looking forward to seeing all of you.

WEINTRAUB #general

James Elliott <James_Elliott@...>

I am asking anyone who has knowledge of the Weintraubs in England
(Liverpool,I believe) to contact me. Benjamin WEINTRAUB was a merchant
dealing in antique furniture and estate jewellery in the early 1800's.
His daughter married a gentile and this limb of the family was cut off.
Can anyone help?

This is not intended to be blank! #lithuania

Barry Spinak <punim@...>

My message of yesterday regarding my receiving several blank messages
appeared on the list as a blank message. Is this the doing of of a
poltergeist in the system? (Notice, I didn't say "virus") - Poltergeist
are always real, they just become invisible when you look at them.

Apparently some members, upon seeing my blank "blank message" clicked on
"reply to sender" to let me know my message was blank and, Voila! - my
original message appeared in their reply window. This does not work for
all the other blank messages I have received in the past 7-8 days (I had
already tried this on some). If the moderator is reading my message,
please let me know that someone is working on the problem. If the rest
of you are having the same problem, chime in!

Lachaim,
Barry Spinak

Moderator's Note: In the "edit mode" on my screen, your message
did not appear blank and so I sent it on. I will forward this discussion on
to the powers that be and see if we can get some help. Anyone else
having trouble with blank messages?

Appropos the Sucov posting...

I have a similar experience. Despite references in various family documents
to Keidan origins, the archivist in Vilnius could not find any of my known
Kaplan or Fine relatives in the vital records for Keidan. Neither do these
relatives appear in the various grave lists.

Perhaps my relatives were likewise resident in Keidan, but members of a
nearby Jewish community?

In Response to the letter >from ELEN SUCOV, One of my own
ancestors was ESTHER MICHAELOVSKY. she was born much earlier,
probably ca. 1812 in either KRETINGA or in TAURAGE.

There were other Michaelovsky families in mid 19th century in
Taurage.

My great, great grandmother, ESTHER MICHAELOVSKY married DOV BER
LAPIN ben PINCHAS. I hope this can be of some help.

There was a David Michaelovsky who marrried Esther bas Isaac
Katzenellbogan. They settled in Capetown, South Africa. (per Professor
George Sackheim's book, "SCATTERED SEEDS".

I realize that the name in question was MICHELEVITCH. But it seems
to me that there is a similarity and that the Russianized endings
might not make that much difference. Under what circumstances would
the name ending be "vitch" and when would it be "sky"?

Can anyone tell me how one determines how much to send to
the Head Archivist in Kovno, Vitalija Gircyte and the address?

BARASCH from Brody and Polish resources in D.C. #galicia

Sandi Steinberg <sandirs@...>

I'm a member of Gesher Galicia now widening the search for
members/descendants of the BARASCH family of Brody. Does anyone know who
Rabbi Shmuel was--the rabbi >from whom the anagram forming that name
"BARASCH", ben Rebbe Shmuel?

I am also interested in corresponding with anyone who has been to Brody.

My other interest is Staszow, the town in which my grandfather was born.
It's in Kielce province, 8 miles >from the city of Kielce.

Thank you for your time and any information.

By the way, since I live in the suburbs of Washington DC, here is some
information I hope might be of use if you are also nearby or visiting this
summer:

In Washington, D.C.:

The Polish Embassy is at 2640 16th St., NW. phone (202) 234-3800. Haven't
been there yet since I have just started a new job.

The Polish National Library is open all day and evening on Tuesday;
Thursday afternoons; and Saturday >from about 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
I plan to go one Tuesday evening.
Its address (it is independent >from the Embassy) is 1503 21st Street, NW.
Phone: (202) 466-2665.

Both these addresses are in central downtown Washington and easy to get to
by bus or subway.

I called the Ukrainian Embassy last week to ask about Brody and they've
promised to send me some information. I will let you know if and when it
comes.

The Ukrainian Embassy is at 33350 M Street, NW, Washington, DC 20007.
Phone (202) 333-0606. It opens at 9 a.m. Ask about the library.

Hope this helps some folks.

Searching SCHILLER in Argentina #general

Madeline Schiller <mschiller@...>

When my grandfather-in-law (Phillip SCHILLER)came to this country from
Poland he came with several of his brothers and sister ( Alex and Rose).
One of the brothers went on to Argentina. A very long time ago, we
received a phone call >from them and my father-in-law spoke to them in
Yiddish. We never made contact with this branch of the family after that
and my father-in-law lost the information. To put closure on the family
history my father-in-law is desparately looking for this leg of his
family. We think that they manufactured brooms in Argentina.
