[US] Department of Defense to Preserve Historic Images #general

Jan Meisels Allen

The Department of Defense's central repository for imagery, the Defense
Imagery Management Operations Center [DIMOC] recently signed a $5 million
agreement to digitize, store and provide access to hundreds of thousands of
historical images. In addition to its digital archive, the agency has a
massive backlog of images on physical, analog media that ranges from
photographic negatives and slides to films and VHS tapes which are
deteriorating faster than they can offer it to the National Archives. They
also have the problem that their climate-controlled facility in Riverside
California is running out of space. Regardless of condition, images sent to
Riverside are never simply destroyed, because they're federal records.
Everything is assessed, barcoded and stored for later digitization.

Originally, it was determined that it would take 25 years and $50 million to
digitize the current analog holdings with available government resources.
Instead they are taking a different approach that will take only 5 years. In
exchange for digitizing the images, the contractor, T3Media, will be granted
a limited period of exclusivity during which they will be able to charge
non-DOD users a fair-market fee to use the images. This is similar to
agreements that the National Archives has made with genealogical
organizations to digitize some of their holdings.

To read the article go to:
http://www.defense.gov/news/newsarticle.aspx?id=121516

To access a sampling of the holdings go to
http://www.defenseimagery.mil/imagery.html

Thank you to Martin Kaminer for sharing the information.

Jewish Pilica late 1700s #general

Dear Genners

The Spring 2002 issue of the Kielce-Radom SIG Journal quotes the
Pinkas HaKehillot Polen Volume VII and describes the business
interests of two members of the Jewish community of Pilica in the late
1700s Joachim and Hersz Salmanowicz whom it is highly likely are
related to me - Joachim being my direct ancestor. One of the brothers
leased a pub and the manufacture of brandy (hence I believe the
surname STILLMAN) the other was involved with a paper factory, a
candle factory and selling salt.

Could anyone tell me if there is a local archive which might have any
documents related to these two relatives of mine or records relating
to tax collection or the Jewish population in Pilica in general in the
1700s as I would love to get hold of copies of any relevant records.

Thanks as always

Re: Novograd vs. Novograd Volynskij & Krupa #general

Lisa P. Wanderman

I want to thank everyone who responded to my question concerning the Ukraine
towns Novograd Volynskij and Krupa. I received a wealth of information.

-Iva provided me with the explanation that novo/nowo/novi = new and grad
=town, so Novograd = Newtown. She also provided me with a Google map with
the route >from Krupa to Rivne to Ostrog to Novograd Volynskyi charted out.
Fantastic!

-Sharon also provided a helpful link to a map and pointed out that
Wolin/Volynskij/Volhynia were all different names in different languages for
the same province. So it is New Town in Volhnia province.

-Igor provided me with historical information about Krupa, that it was an
old village that was founded in 1545. There were only about 900 people
living there and it had wonderful archaeological findings.

-Sally wisely reminded me that information on a passenger list was taken
from the ticket that was purchased at place of origination. She also asked
if there was any trace of Avrun Mordechai Susid in Novograd Volynskij. My
answer is not yet, but still looking. Has much of the material available
from that area already been digitized, translated and made available?
-Edwin informed me that in the Ukrainian language there was no G sound and
that is why the passenger list had Novograd spelled Noworad.

-Chuck, the Towns Director for Ukraine SIG sprang into action and sent
several informative emails including the notification that Krupa was now
officially added to the Ukraine SIG Towns list. As of today, it can be found
on the Ukraine SIG home page http://www.jewishgen.org/Ukraine/default.asp
under the Towns & Districts tab, Alphabetical List of Towns. Now that it is
official, Krupa needs a Town Leader and Kehila Links Leader!

Thanks to everyone! I am very grateful!

[UK] WWI Diaries Found About Palestine Campaign 1915-1918 #general

Jan Meisels Allen

Due to 2014 being the centenary of the beginning of WWI many archives,
libraries and others are finding WWI treasures that previously were not
available or at least easily accessible to the public. One of the campaigns
in WWI was the Palestine campaign fought between the British Empire,
Ottoman and German empires between 1915 and 1918. The British conquest of
Palestine led to the creation of the states of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and
Syria.

Recently two diaries written by a soldier during the First World War have
been unearthed by York Castle Museum with curators puzzling about what they
could contain because they are written in shorthand [Pittman]. The museum is
hoping to find persons who can help decipher the diaries. They came across
the books in boxes of World War I archive material donated by the East
Riding Yeomanry Old Comrades Association. The museum curator stated they
found a card with the diaries that say they are the shorthand diaries of the
Palestine Campaign in 1917-1918, written by Wass Reader of the 1st East
Riding Yeomanry C Squadron. The dates in the diary appear to cover the
period in which battles were fought in Gaza, Nazareth and Jerusalem. The
museum curator stated they found a card with the diaries that say they are
the shorthand diaries of the Palestine Campaign in 1917-1918, written by
Wass Reader of the 1st East Riding Yeomanry C Squadron.

New Kherson town and gubernia KheilaLinks website is requesting information. #general

Charles WALOWITZ

We are in the process of creating a JewishGen KehilaLinks website for the
town and gubernia of Kherson, Ukraine.

We would like people who have roots there to submit material for the website.
You can submit photos of the town, photos of people born in the town,
postcards, and family histories. Also very helpful would be a descriptive
narrative mentioning all the generations, who married whom, what they did
for a living, where they lived, their migration, documents you may have
received >from Kherson, etc. We would be grateful if you will help us
"populate" our new website with materials about our ancestral town.

If you can help with this, or if you have any other ideas, please write to
us directly at ruthw95@yahoo.com.

Hello!
Krupa village is an old village (was founded in 1545) situated in a
present-day Volyn oblast, Lutsk district on the very border with
present-day Rivne oblast.
Around 900 people. Has many remarkable archeological findings.

Igor Holyboroda,
Lviv, Ukraine

From: "Lisa P. Wanderman" <lisa.wanderman@gmail.com>

While reviewing my maternal g grandfather Avrum Mordechai SUSID's 1907 US
steamship arrival papers, I noticed something "new." His last permanent
address was given as "Russia, Nowograd" and his place of birth was also
listed as "Nowograd." The name and address of contact "in country whence
alien came" is listed as his daughter Reisel Hechtman, Ostrog, Wolin,
Russia.

I don't know how I missed this, but the family always claimed to be from
Ostrog originally, later Rivne. I had never heard anyone speak of Nowograd!
Searching the JewishGen Communities Database I found Nowogrod, Poland, 77 mi
NNE of Warsaw and Velikiy Novgorod, Russia, 304 miles NW of Moscow/ 102
miles SSE of St. Petersburg. Neither town remotely close to Ostrog nor seems
to make any sense with what I know about my ggrandfather. Of course,
anything is possible.......

...I have also found someone with a very similar name to my ggrandfather, Avrum
Lejzer SUSID, father of Azril SUSID, living in a town called Krupa
(Kripa/Kripe,) Rivne Uyezd. I am not finding the town in the Communities
Database. Anyone know Krupa?
