New Holocasut Assets Database #galicia

Barbara and Marty Yeager <barbara-and-marty@...>

Some of you may know that a new Holocaust Assets database was recently
published by Avotaynu. I have not seen information about it posted to this
list so wanted to make sure that you know about it. This list can be accessed on the Internet at <http://www.avotaynu.com/HolocaustList> . It
includes 29,000 Holocaust era Jewish names.

The difference between this database and the ones that have been previously
published is that the Avotaynu database also includes data >from the
*Austrian State Archives in Vienna*. The Austrian files include all assets,
including possible bank accounts, insurance policies and other holdings.

I would like to encourage everybody whose family was personally affected by
the Holocaust to take a look at this database.

As many of you may know, the deadline for claiming the Swiss Holocaust
Assets is October 22, 99. You can find out more by going to
<http://www.swissbankclaims.com> . I understand, though, that it is really
difficult to download the forms >from there. You can also call 1-888-635-5483
to request a form, or write to:

Re: Presenysle #galicia

Suzan Wynne <srwynne@...>

In reply to David Baer's various inquiries, I have the following
suggestions. The town of "Presenysle" is almost certainly Przemysl. I
have responded privately to an inquiry >from Mr. Baer about the name
SCHANZ. I would add that I just came across the town of SCHANZ in
Germany so perhaps the family originated there and carried the name
elsewhere.

In response to Janice Rosen's inquiry about a Mayor ROSENBLATT >from the
Rozwadow area, I would suggest that she contact the current mayor of
Rozwadow (in Polish, of course) to inquire if a ROSENBLATT was ever
mayor of that town or any town in the area. These types of records are
maintained in the town halls of Poland.

Heard informally that the JewishGen group in LA had made a gift to the

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles made a $5,000 contribution to the
FHC in Los Angeles to complete their collection of New York passenger lists
through the end of 1909. This donation came out of proceeds >from the 1998 Summer
Seminar on Jewish Genealogy. This was announced in our newsletter, "Roots-Key"

Re: 19th Century Galician town with a Mayor ROSENBLATT? #galicia

Janice Rosen wrote in part:

[It is said that] my great-great-grandfather Josef ROSENBLATT was a mayor
of his town during the 19th Century. He lived in "Galicia",[possibly]
Rozwadow or surrounding areas. In researching Rozwadow, I have found no
evidence of a mayor named ROSENBLATT in that town. Does anyone know of
any town in Galicia that had a mayor named Josef ROSENBLATT?
What about if he was a Kehilat (Jewish local self-government)
chairman? I doubt that there were many (if any) Jewish mayors in Galicia
unless converted. My great-uncle got as far as into a town council of
Zakopane and that was considered an achievement and a proof of great
respect. Perhaps Galician experts would know more. I'd like to hear
comments on this.
