Re: ROSENTHALL from Kovna #lithuania

Lynn Saul <lynnsaul@...>

Suwalki Gubernia was a region populated y Litvaks -- "Lithuanian
Jews." Lithuania as a country was not recognized during most of
the 18th and 19th centuries. Poland and Russia controlled the area,
so many records are available through their records and in their
languages. LitvakSIG is the best resource although many records will
be through JRI-Poland. Many Litvaks migrated to the UK.

According to the 1891 English Census, I found that Sarah SCHENSUL nee
ROSENTHAL was born in Kovna. I have not found a marriage for her in
England, but a child Joseph was born about 1866 at Middlesex.

The next tricky bit is that she was the sister to my Great Grandmother
Rose ABEL nee ROSENTHAL. Rose married in 1879 at the Registrars Office
in Whitechapel London. Her Husband then came to New Zealand.
They re-married in the Synagogue in 1884 here in New Zealand.
Rose came to N.Z in 1883. On all the certificates that I have
of my Grandparents weddings, the birth of their children, it
states only the birthplace of Rose as Germany, Poland, Russia and
England, except one that says Suwalki. I had found that Suwalki
was in Poland and there was no Rose ROSENTHAL . According to papers,
I calculate her birth about 1856 / 57.

Then recently when I found the birthplace of her sister Sarah at Kovna,
I looked at the LitvakSIG site I then found Suwalki Gubernia there.
I am so confused with the above that I feel like that I am not going
to get anywhere.

The Parents I have listed >from Rose's certificates is Israel ROSENTHAL
& Hanne MONNE

Any help would be very much appreciated

"The Golden Medina: A Family History" #general

Janette Silverman

In 2010, Nancy Kravetz wrote a phenomenal book "Remember Me to the
Little Ones." Its presentation was so inspiring that I kept its format
in mind while writing my doctoral dissertation a year later. I thought
at the time that there was no way that a genealogy book could meet the
standard that Nancy had set. It's now 4 years later and another
Kravetz, this time Nancy's husband, Dr. Robert Kravetz wrote (and
published) his side of the family. Like Nancy's book, the foreword was
written by Arthur Kurzweil, which immediately speaks to the quality of
the work.

"The Golden Medina" is the story of 4 families whose roots are in Eastern
Europe. The volume is lavishly illustrated , the writing is crisp and
clear, and the research exhaustive. It meets the extraordinary standard
that Nancy's earlier book set. The family stories are written in a way
that makes the reader feel as though they knew the people. The
descriptions of these Jews who made their way >from persecution and
pogroms to the shores of America where they found a land of hopes and
promises will be of interest to all genealogists. Whether or not your
family was a member of the extended Kravetz family or not, the writing
style, inclusion of illustrations, and the layout of the book make this
a must read.

The families whose journeys are traced are KRAVETZ, BURKO, FUHR &
STEIER. The places in Europe >from which they came, as noted in Bob's
book, are: Pogost-Zareczny, just south of Pinsk; Wolyn, also near Pinsk;
Ottynia, near Kolomyya.

The book can be purchased >from the Arizona Jewish Historical Society in
Phoenix for $25 - 122 East Culver St., Phoenix, AZ 85004, (602)241-7870,
email is azjhs@aol.com . All proceeds will go to the Society for the
preservation of Phoenix Jewish History.

bio of Israeli businessman HALEVI from 1960s #general

A. E. Jordan

Hoping someone can help me with some bios/info of an Israeli businessman
named Meir HALEVI. (I have also seen it spelled Meyer but I think that
is a poor translation.)

I am mostly interested in a bio that details his business and what
happened to him. I am not necessarily trying to build his whole family
tree but interested in his heritage and life story.

I know he had a shipping company called Somerfin which failed in the
1960s causing a bit of a sensation in Israel.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Need help solving a mystery #general

Julia Lombardo <julialombardo@...>

Hi genners!

I am hoping someone out there is a better sleuth than me, because I've
exhausted everything I could and cannot find the family I am looking
for.

I am researching Morris FROOMIN (probably FRUMIN originally) a
shoemaker. Morris was born 15 Apr 1897, and arrived in the US around
1915. Morris married Rose WILNER (nee GOLDSTEIN) (2nd marriage for Rose)
04 Aug 1931 in Jackson, Missouri. Rose had a son >from a previous
marriage, Melvin. Morris died in San Francisco in 29 Apr 1958 (mother's
maiden name listed as STALIN).

I know everything about Morris after his marriage to Rose, ** but ** I am
having a real hard time tracing him prior to his marriage to Rose.

I have a reason to believe that Morris was married once before. I found
what I think is his WWI Draft Record >from Chicago. It gave his birthdate
as 15 Mar 1894. Address was 2629 Crystal (?) Street. Employed by
O'Connor and Goldberg. ** And ** it says he is supporting a ** mother **
and ** wife **!

He is also listed as an Alien.

Then, there is a 1930 Census record for Morris, in Drumright Oklahoma.
The record is transcribed as Morris T. Troomin. Morris is living alone,
and it says he is Naturalized and Single.

I can't find a 1920 census. What I would really like to find is Morris'
mother ... supposedly named Leah.

I did find a 1922 City Directory for Kearney, Nebraska ... which I believe
is my Morris again. Lists him as a Shoe Maker ... address: 119 W 28th.

I would really appreciate any help you can offer. My main goals are to
find Morris' mother ... and hopefully find out where she died. I believe
that she is a cousin or aunt of my maternal grandfather's mother!

My second goal, not so critical is to find out who Morris was married
to, prior to marrying Rose.

Thank you all!!!!!

Julia Lombardo

I wish to thank everyone who responded, both on-line and off, to my
question about the name "Gnendel." One off-line responder noted that
this had been a topic of discussion previously, and suggested that I
check the archived Discussion Group messages. I did, and, indeed,
found a most comprehensive and enlightening discussion of the origin
and meaning of the name. So I thank her for reminding me of that
excellent JewishGen resource.

If you search on the archives, for Genendel and maybe
Geneshe (various spellings of both are possible) you'll find a
long and interesting thread about the meaning of the names,
including, I think, some varying opinions.

I remember this because Genendel is my Yiddish name, too.
