JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen RE: Julian/Julijan #general

Jim Bennett

My own great great grandfather was Julius Salomonsohn, born in
Lobsens[then Posen Province, Prussia--now part of Northwest Poland].
His grandson was named Julian in his memory. So my mother Shirley
was Shirley/Sara bat Julian.

A few years ago in the Polish Archives branch in Bydgoszcz, in the
files of the Jewish Community of Lobzenica, I found records of school
enrollments of Jewish children Recorded in the 1830-1840 period. And
there was my gg grandfather Juda son of Michael Salomonsohn.

No now, in synagogue, when we recite memorial prayers I can now say --
after 30 years of searching--"My mother, my teacher Sara bat Yehuda".

Jews whose civil name in Europe was Julian, were almost always born as
Yehuda=Juda.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen 19th century travel to America #general

Eva Lawrence

I have the travel diary of an ancestor who sailed to New Orleans >from Bonn
via Antwerp in 1852, together with his 11-year-old son. While apparently
they travelled without a passport or other papers, he does comment on
customs officials who stopped them at each border and examined the luggage,
and also seems to have been afraid of being arrested on leaving Baden - he
was known to have been associated with dissidents and can't have had
official permission to leave. In Weffer's 1977 book of 19th-century Bonn
emigrants, there is note of a 1868 Coeln official advertisement seeking the
son for evading his Prussian military duties. However, the father's
equally illegal emigration and his subsequent return appears to have
remained unrecorded.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Master Genealogist Genealogy Software to be Discontinued #general

Jan Meisels Allen

On July 29 it was announced that The Master Genealogist (TMG)
software it will be discontinued at the end of 2014 after being
in the market for 25 years. It will continue to sell the full
product and updates through September. It is expected that
support will be maintained as will the support forum which would
be available for user-to-user support. According to the
announcement, this was done for two reasons: the market for
advanced features has proved to be insufficient to support the
infrastructure that is necessary to support it and continue
development; and health issues of Bob Welke, owner of Wholly
Genes, the producer of TMG.

Dear Genners,
There is one more answer to those who wondered whether it was
customary to eat fish on Friday.night. This is an article that
was written in the Jewish Heritage Online Magazine.
Quite enlightening.

Vaclav Fred Chavtal #austria-czech

Vaclac Fred Chavtal just gave a terrific talk at the conference on the restoration of Jewish
cemeteries in Bohemia, which is coordinated by him >from his Forestry Museum in Tachov,
Bohemia, http://zh.tachov.org/ >from the web page at http://zh.tachov.org/vyzkum.php you
can find a list of towns where his group is working. Vaclav says he will gladly share the results
of their research (cemetery lists, tombstone transcriptions, etc) with anyone who writes to him.
His e-mail is f7fred@.... Each project seems to be separately funded on an ad hoc basis.
The presentation was really very impressive. With just a small group of people involved they
have managed to do miracles and restore what remains of our ancestral heritage in Bohemia.
The work is on the highest level, very scientific and well organized. Thanks to Alex Woodle for
helping to bring Vaclav to our conference.
