Searching GOODBLATT/GUTBLAT in Israel #general

David Ellis

I am seeking information about descendants of my gg-gf's brother Moshe
Yitzhak GUTBLAT who may be living in Israel today. The surname has changed
in their branch, and I don't know what it is now.

Many years ago my mother's cousin Chanita GOODBLATT, who had made aliyah,
reached out to some distant cousins, but they did not talk and never
exchanged information. I would like to try again. My preferred mode of
contact is e-mail, using the address in my signature.

Thanks in advance!

Jewish ancestors in Bacs-Bodrog county Hungary #general

Don Krueger <kruegerand@...>

I am trying to locate people with surname LIEBMAN(N) in Bacs-Bodrog
or surrounding counties of Hungary that may be ancestors of mine.
My grandmother, Eva LIEBMANN (born about 1892) and her father (born
about 1867) immigrated >from the town of Sajkasszentivan, Hungary
(today, Sajkas, Serbia) to Ellis Island, New York. They left the
port of Fiume, Hungary (today, Rijeka, Croatia) on SS Ivernia on 3
June 1914 and arrived in New York on 22 June 1914.

Based on my research, Eva and David LIEBMANN planned to stay with
David's brother, Georg(e) LIEBMANN, when they arrived in St. Louis
in 1914. Indeed, the 1917 St. Louis Missouri City Directory does
show a David and George LIEBMANN as living (working?) at 940
Morrison Avenue.

Any assistance in locating my LIEBMANN ancestors would be much
appreciated. It is possible they were not of Jewish ancestry, but
given their surname, this seems unlikely.

Shalom and thank you,

Donald Alvin Krueger

Burial Record for LACHMAN #unitedkingdom

benzipen@...

To: Members of JCR-UK

I have established that Isaac Philip LACHMAN was born in Europe in 1829
and lived most of his life in Bakers Row Mile End New Town, London, UK

Death Registration Index shows that Philip Lachman died in 1909 -
Wandsworth, London. (He was known intermittently as either Isaac or
Philip.)

His wife was Leah - born Lyons.

The track ends here and I have been unable to find any burial
information for either husband or wife.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

ViewMate translation request - Polish - SOKAL / SOKOL from Kolomea #galicia

Malcolm Sokol <misokol@...>

I have posted on ViewMate a record which I believe is the birth
record of my great uncle, Moses Sokal son of Ruben Sokol (as
recorded: Rubin Sokal) >from 1871 in Kolomea, Galicia. The record
contains extensive citation in the extra columns to the right which I
need translated. The copy >from JRI is blurry and this is the best I can
post. There appears to be a date of 1847 and the mention of
Kolomea in this paragraph. There is also a mention of Lwow
elsewhere and Lwow has been included in the JRI digital record.

The record is at the following address ...

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Alexander Granach, actor, aka Jessaja Gronoch from Werbowitz, Galicia - Viewmate I.D. #poland

Pamela Weisberger

I've uploaded a photograph to Viewmate of a group of actors circa
1930s to see if the people in the picture can be identified.

It is at: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM35333

In the center of the photo is the actor, Alexander Granach, who was
born Jessaja Szajko Gronoch in Werbowitz (Wierzbowce/ Werbiwci)
Eastern Galicia, near Horodenka in 1890. His life story echos the
title of one of his books, ">from the Shtetl to the Stage: The Odyssey
of a Wandering Actor."

Being part of a large (poor) family, as a teenager he ran away from
home and apprenticed as a baker, moving >from town to town. Ending up
in Lemberg (Lwow) he saw his first play which inspired him to become
an actor. By the age of 16 he was in Berlin, then London and Vienna,
both acting in Yiddish theatre (where he acquired his stage name) and
being a practicing anarchist. He fled to the Soviet Union when Hitler
came to power and when that country proved inhospitable, he settled in
Hollywood, where he appeared in such films as the Ernst Lubitch
classic, "Ninotchka," and "For Whom the Bell Tolls." (He also
convincingly played both Nazis and loyal anti-fascists.) He died in
1945 in New York. (If you are curious about his life, check out the
Widipedia page and his books, still available for sale.)

This photo is of him with his actor's troupe, possibly taken in
Kolomea (the word "Kolomea" is on it) in 1934. Some of their names are
written on the photograph in English and Hebrew and we'd like to
identify who they were, their fates, and to locate their descendants,
on behalf of Angelika Wittlich, one of the producers of the film:
"Granach: >from Shtetl to Stage," which was shown at the 2014 IAJGS
Conference. (His son, Gad Granach, immigrated to British Mandate of
Palestine in 1936 and published a memoir entitled Where is Home?
Stories >from the Life of a German-Jewish Emigre." ) Although
identified as a "German actor," Alexansder Granach was born a
Galitzianer!)

The names in English on the page (with best attempts to decipher the
handwriting) are:

Gisala Herman,
Tonka
Jakob Eisner
Rosa Kretz
Eibely__
Zimmedferton Zimmer
Aron Fetcher

The men and woman appear to be in their 20s - 50s. If you know any of
the names or recognize the faces, please contact me privately.
