Even if you cannot get the exact location before the visit, the
people at the office at the entrance to the cemetery are very helpful
and will give you both the location and if I remember correctly, a map.

Cyrillic alphabet translation #general

Merle Kastner <merlek@...>

Dear Genners,

I have a small number of photos of cemetery stones and memorial tablets,
taken in Europe this summer. They are written in Cyrillic characters
and Hebrew.

I would like to send them to JOWBR - for the
Burial database and for the Memorial Tablet database.

Would someone be able to translate the Cyrillic inscriptions for me?

If so, I would really appreciate this. Please contact me privately
at: merlek@bell.net

Many thanks,

Goldfarb Society #general

Rachel Kliger <rkliger@...>

Before WWII, a group called the "Goldfarb Society" helped people with the
name Goldfarb immigrate to the United States. Potential immigrants needed a
letter >from a citizen saying that they would be responsible for the
immigrant. The Goldfarb Society would send this letter. They did not
provide financial assistance or anything else. They just provided the
needed letter.

I am looking for any information on the Goldfarb Society. It's headquarter
was in New York. Does anyone know about it?

Thanks,

Genealogy and Social Media #general

Ann Rabinowitz

Dear JewishGenners:

This is just a note about research, social media and responding to
inquiries. It is lovely that researchers use every tool at their
disposal to enhance and expand their family trees. This includes,
of course, the ubiquitous social media and its many new and exciting
products. These things have proven to be a wonderful means of
breaking down brick walls and adding family information.

However, >from those of us, who answer inquiries, it would be very
much appreciated, if you would *first* use regular means to contact
people such as via e-mail. Explain who you are, where you are, and
what it is you want and why you are contacting that particular person.
If you are responding to a posting or a story then put the date, title
and where you read it.

Often, people write to me and it is about something I said on a digest
about ten years ago . . . my memory isn't that terrific!!!! Besides
which, in ten years, all sorts of new info has probably come about to
update what I had originally said.

In addition, it is much better than using tools such as LinkedIn to
contact someone. It doesn't tell you who the person is and why they
want to contact you . . . I get these requests constantly and
repeatedly and *hate* them and will never respond to them.

Given all that, I savor the contacts >from JewishGenners and all of
their requests, inquiries and little foibles as well as family
"bubbe meises". It is certainly a learning experience for me still
after all of these years.

Just one person's opinion . . . trying not to be a curmudgeon about it!!!!

Thanks,
Ann Rabinowitz
