JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Rabbi Abraham Shmuel Goldberg HY"D
#rabbinic
Sandra <geshem12@...>
It is with great sorrow that I must bring you the news that Rabbi Abraham
Shmuel Goldberg, whom many of you know, was brutally murdered this morning by Palestinian terrorists while at the morning prayers in a Jerusalem synagogue. Rabbi Goldberg was an expert in rabbinical genealogy, but was of a very humble nature and would simply sign off to most of us as Abraham. Rabbi Goldberg and I worked together for years researching the Lipkin family and the yichus of Rabbi Yisrael Lipkin Salanter. I would search for public records and send them to him by email, and he would do translations >from rabbinical books. We had an enormous amount of email sharing and he translated many rabbinical writings for me about my Ish-Horowitz Ticktin Rittenberg family. He helped countless people searching for their "yichus" because of his gemilut hasadim. I am sure many of you received help >from him. My heart goes out to his wife, children and grandchildren. May they be comforted among the mourners in Tzion. Sandra Rachmaniel Jerusalem, Israel

JGSGB - Dutch and Sephardi SIG 30th November

Gina Marks <ginagem@...>
A date for your diary
Dutch and Sephardi Special Interest Group Meeting Sunday 30th November 2014 Council Room at 33 Seymour Place, London W1 >from 2.30 to 6.00 pm. Speaker: Margery Cohen "Genesis: An Indian Childhood -- a beginning and an ending." This is a very interesting and unusual subject and even if this is not your own particular field of research, please try to come along and support us. Other areas of research can be very interesting in their own right and having seen some of Margery's wonderful family photos, we highly recommend this talk. It takes the Programme Committee a lot of time and effort to organize these events, so we look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible to hear Margery's talk and of course to join in the round-the-table discussion about everyone's research after the talk and a refreshments break. As always, non -members are very welcome to join us for a very small contribution, so please pass on the details to anyone else you think might be interested. More information about the speaker: Margery Cohen was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) to parents of Baghdadian origin. She grew up among people of all faiths and cultures, until she left India with her family in the mid '60s. She trained as an accountant, and works for a small city-based practice. Her passion is music, and she sang for many years as a member of the Zemel Choir, and later, with the London Symphony Chorus. Margery went back to Mumbai on a tour organised by Jewish Renaissance, and was inspired to write an article for Jewish Renaissance about her childhood and early memories. It was her first trip back to her birthplace after 45 years. For the first time since she lived there, she was able to visit her former home, school and the graves of her grandparents. She will talk to us about her family origins, her life growing up in India, and the end of that thriving community. Her talk is entitled "Genesis: An Indian Childhood -- a beginning and an ending." This is her personal story about what it was like living in India in the twilight years of the Raj. She will be happy to answer questions at the end of her presentation. Please RSVP Gina Marks if you intend joining us - ginagem@... - for security purposes and so that we can supply adequate refreshments!

DNA Cousins,
Ithak Epstein wrote that he was 100% all Ashkenazic Diaspora and wanted more data. First my personal "My origins" has changed >from 100% Middle Eastern Jewish (prior to My Origins), to 92% Ashkenazi Diaspora, 5% European (mostly Eastern European) and 2% Middle Eastern (where the map indicates Israel, Egypt and Jordan). None of these rounded up so my total is 99%. My cousins have different combinations of these (and one with some East Asian). But if you upload your raw data to GEDMATCH.com there are a number of admixture utilities that will show other (older) origins. Sarah L M Christiansen Georgetown, TX

Russian Army records - 1878/9 - available somewhere?
#general
wilsonettess@...
Advice please.
A friend has her grandfather's Russian Army book (he was born in 1876 in Leczna then considered Russia now Poland) - whereby it states that her grandfather served in the Russian Army 14th Battery Reg. 1897-1898. Is there any possibility that paperwork exists somewhere that would show exactly his army record at that time? Please contact me privately with any information. Thank you. Patricia Wilson (Israel)

"If this is her son Sol, why would she need to be granted guardianship? Wouldn't a widowed mother automatically have that status?" "Marlene Bishow" <mlbishow@...> responded: "Whether this is true in general is unclear, but in my personal experience and research, in New York State, when a parent died and the child has financial assets, the surviving parent may be named as guardian of the child and those assets." I wonder how common and widespread this is - my great-grandmother living in what was Galicia and then Poland, was, in 1920, also named as guardian of her minor children after the death of her husband. Thanks to the many who replied with suggestions, both privately and on
the list! The consensus seems to be that (a) naming of a parent as legal guardian was not unusual in matters of inheritance; (b) that I can get probate and guardianship records >from the Sullivan County court to learn more; and (c) that "Sallie" in that era was indeed a diminutive of Solomon.
