I stand corrected! I have found my copy of "Image Before My Eyes - A
Photographic History of Jewish Life in Poland, 1864-1939" by Lucjan
Dobroszycki & Barbara Kirshenblat-Gimblett. Published by Shockan Books
in 1977 - ISBN 0-8052-3607 (hardcover) 0-8052-0634-5 (softcover)

Sorry that I gave mis-information.....

The book by Roman Vishniac is called "A Vanished World",
also a collection of photographs of prewar life in Poland.
He was a wonderful photographer and the book is very moving.
I don't have any bibliographic information about it, but it
can probably be found on any book sales website.

Glotzer - Kuperman - Eisenberg #belarus

Robert Jacobs <jacobsr@...>

I am searching for information about the GLOTZER, EISENBERG and KUPERMAN
families >from Pinsk. (I am aware of the GLOTZER genealogy posted on the
Web, but haven't been able to establish a link to it).

My grandfather was Chonya GLOTZER (Chonya the Bathman) who was killed
on the first or second day of the German occupation. My grandmother was
Chinka KUPERMAN EISENBERG.

I have some information about the US branches & the descendants of those
who came to America, so if I can be of assistance there I'd be pleased
to do so.

Good wishes to all.

Re: Elias - Given name #general

Ruth Marcus <rmarcus@...>

Prof. G. L. Esterson provided an extensive discussion of the given name
of Elias. Prof. Esterson wrote:
Here are some of the data for men with this given name, taken >from our
Given Names Data Base:
Hebrew: Eliyahu, Elya(h), Elyu
Origin: Kings I 17:1
I'd like to add that Elias(h) also stands for the Hebrew name of ELISHA
(Kings II 2:1). A similar spelling of a girl's Hebrew name is: ELISHEVA.
My maternal grandmother was born in 1874 in Old Jerusalem (her parents
came >from Lithuania). One document shows that her name was: ALTA RIVKA
(Rebecca) whereas another record shows that her name was: ELISHEVA.
Although I could not think about any connection between these two names, I
thought I should mention it.

Best wishes,
Ruth (Eliashberg) Marcus

the name derivation database information (Hebrew, Yiddish, European secular,

First off, Amy did not mention >from which country her Rivka came. I
will assume that it was >from Lithuania, for which I have the most
information. I will also assume that her Rivka immigrated to the US,
and not to one of the other English-speaking countries.

Hebrew: Rivka
Origin: Genesis 22:23

Yiddish: Rivka, Rivke
Yiddish nicknames: Riva, Risya, Rivele, Rivtsa

US English: Rachel, Rebecca, Betty, Eva, Rita, Riva, Rive, Rose, Doa,
Roberta, Regina
US nicknames: Becky, Beckie

Hope this is helpful for you.

Re: 1791 census records #poland

JCYMBLER@...

I was in Poland at the end of November and visited the Krakow Archives. I saw the census for the entire voidvodship of Krakow for 1790-92. It is massive. I ordered copies of my towns' pages. The copies are supposed to be made and sent to me through Warsaw but I have not received them yet.

Re: Warsaw PSA Project Update! #poland

JAZAfula@...

I will be in Warsaw in early February. Can anyone recommend sites that I may
want to include in my visit -- for history sake, or to do some research. I
don't speak/read any Polish.

Is there a main office where these compilations are being worked on that I
could perhaps visit? If anyone knows how I might contact the Ronald Lauder
Foundation in the US, I would appreciate the information. I can't seem to
find where their offices are located.

Thanks.
