Disqualified Voters in Libau 1912 #courland #latvia

Knud and Lorraine Bertelsen <klb@...>

Dear Martha,

Thanks for your comments on my query re the disqualification to vote of
Abram Shlomovitch LAPIDUS.

I am afraid your explanation seems to be at odds with the evidence
supplied by Paul Berkay's documents, which indicate that the business in
Libau was listed/registered? in the name of Abram
as late as 1924, with the listings in the directories >from 1925 to at
least 1930 being in the name of his son, Benno Abramov LAPIDUS.

So there must have been another reason for the 1912 disqualification,
which we will probably never be able to ascertain. Thanks anyway.

Shalom

Lorraine Bertelsen

JewishGen's Millennium Gift to Newbies #lithuania

To Litvaksig

As we have always done in the past, JewishGen is here to help... and this
time our gift is in the person of Phyllis Kramer, knowledgeable
genealogist, super teacher, patient, supportive, and most important willing
to do an online Introduction to Genealogy Course as JewishGen's way of
saying thank you to all those who have supported us financially within the
past year....

Phyllis' course will cover all the basics....all you need to know to get
started and to keep going to find that ever elusive bit of information that
somehow got a little tweaked in the family lore we all believed until we
got into research <grin> (like grandpa's name was changed at Ellis Island
from Shoin Fagessin to Sean Ferguson)
Okay...let's get serious. This is going to be a 12 session course
(possibly adjusted to meet the needs of students) paired to a private
discussion group for course participants only. We're using a similar model
to that which we set up for Mark Heckman when he taught folks how to create
web-pages and then held a question and answer session until everyone was
comfortable to go to the next step.

All your research "how-to" questions will be answered, you will be guided
through learning how to research census records, passenger manifests, vital
records, all the myriad records that make up the arrows in the genealogist
quiver.

The course is slated to begin on or about the first week in February. You
will get a course outline as we get close to the start date.

Now, here's the caveat....this class is open only to those people who have
made a financial contribution to JewishGen within the past year. If you
have not done so, and this course looks like it might be the answer to your
prayers...and more importantly your questions <grin> before you send in
your subscribe e-mail go straight to
http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/ and make a contribution of at
least $25 for the year.

If, on the other hand, you are current in your support and you want to
subscribe to this course here's how:

address an e-mail to listserv@lyris.jewishgen.org and say

subscribe genintro-2000 <your first name> <your last name>

You will be getting back a request for confirmation, just hit the reply
button on your e-mail program and it will come back to us.

It will take some time for verification that you are in fact current in
your support....you will be notified by e-mail that you are
subscribed....don't write in asking about it...we will get back to you as
soon as possible.

If there are any questions about this course, please direct them to

Kaluszer Society #galicia

JoeO222@...

Hi...

I have an ancestor, Isaac OPPENHEIM, buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in NYC. I
was told by a clerk that he was buried in "The Independent Kaluszer Society".
When I asked what that was, I was just told, "that was the society".

What does society mean in regards to a cemetery? Also, does anyone know what
this particular society means? What does "Kaluszer" mean?

Thanks....Joe Oppenheim
