JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Book announcement

Israel P
I am pleased to announce that my book "ENDOGAMY: One Family, One People" is now
available for preorder, with a release date of 16 August. The book deals with genetic genealogy and analysis of DNA test results with special emphasis on endogamous populations, those who - like European Jews - have been marrying within the tribe for hundreds of years. Endogamy is a special challenge for genetic genealogy and this the first book on the subject. See the foreword and mission statement at www.endogamy-one-family.com. "ENDOGAMY: One Family, One People" is also personal in the sense that my own families, particularly the Pikholz families of east Galicia, are the basis for my work with DNA and this is largely their story. I shall be speaking at several venues in the United States in the second half of August, and they are listed on the website together with other information. I'd be pleased if you would pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested. Israel Pickholtz Jerusalem

Jewish ancestry in Albania
#general
ridvan baxha <rbaxha@...>
I am an inhabitant of gjirokaster in the south albania. Just recently i was
watching a documentary regarding my city when i heard that a great part of my city's population some 500 hundred years ago was of Jewish origin. The speaker of this documentary was supporting this assumption by also looking at the city's architecture, similar to Jewish style like today's Jerusalem. All the residents of my city didn't hand over to the nazi's not a single jew during the second world war. I was also told that a resident of my city surnamed bakalli went over to israel some years ago and thru dna test they found out that he had a jewish ancestry. I was wandering how i could undergo the same dna test if that is at all possible in order to determine my family roots and to tell my children so. Where, how, when can i and my family have this test and who is able to interpret the results of the test. I have heard some stories >from my father's side telling me probably our jewish ancestry. Unfortunately our city records are very poor to prove this fact. So dna would be a a good proof for me and my kids 3 sons. If anyone knows anything about jewish albanians please let me know. Just recently very near to my city was found a hebrew singogue and this tells me a lot. thank you in advance ritvan ferdi baxha MODERATOR NOTE: Information on DNA testing may be found at: http://www.jewishgen.org/DNA/genbygen.html There is a special discussion group for DNA matters, which you are encouraged to join, since DNA is normally off-topic for the main Discussion Group.

(Germany) Munich City Council Upholds Ban on Stolpersteine
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Munich's City Council has upheld its ban on Stolpersteine >from being placed
outside Holocaust victims homes. The Council first rejected this in 2004. The decline to change their policy was due to opponents-including some Jewish leaders-- on the grounds that they allow victim's names to be trampled on again. Jewish concentration camp survivors and victims' families said they will start legal proceedings against the Stolpersteine ban. Stolpersteine are brass plaques embedded in the pavement of former homes of Holocaust victims. About 54,000 have been laid in 1,200 different towns and cities in Europe including 500 German cities. Instead, on July 29th the Munich City Council approved permission for plaques on building facades, if the building owners give approval and atop posts on public grounds. A central memorial listing all the victims' names is planned. ViewMate translation request - Russian (reposted)

Micah Salb
Friends:
I have posted a marriage document in Russian for which I need a translation. (I previously made this request but erroneously said the document was in Polish.) This document relates to the marriage between Liba FLOREK and Nu= ssen GRUSZKA. It is on ViewMate at the following address: http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/responselist.asp?key=3D41492 I know that this is a little bit lengthy, but I would really like to get a complete translation of this, both because I am very curious and because this ties to a mystery we are trying to solve. I would appreciate if you would respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application or, if you have questions or comments, please email me at msalb@lsslawyers.com Thank you so much. Looking for Descendents of Kaplan (Kravchenko) Family
#general
Karen Zale
Recently I have found names of cousins I did not know about.
Now I would love to find them or their descendents. They may not know that the family name in Russia was Kravchenko. The patriarch of the family Abraham Kravchenko used the name Kaplan in America. Elaine Kaplan (b. 1926), Brooklyn and Jerome Harry (1930-2008)and wife Sonya Kaplan (1932)children of Sadie Cohen (1897-1976) and David Kaplan (1884-1977). Amy and Janet Klein one of them may live in Israel, Harold Klein (1954-2007) children of Florence Epstein (1926-2006) and Ben Klein (1916-2006). Jerome Hemowitz (b. 1939) son of Minnie Kaplan (1906-1993) and Samuel Heimowitz (1906-?). Jerald Allen Seide (b. 1944), son of Kitty Feigelman (1916-1994)and Leo Seide (1904-1985). Last address I could find for him was in Queens, New York. If anyone knows my cousins would you please ask them to get in touch with me. How to find Holocaust survivors?
#general
My mother's sister, Eva Rosette FIRST, nee BLOCH, was deported >from Hannover,
Germany, to Riga, Latvia (Arolsen) on 15 Dec 1941, and was sent >from Riga to Stutthof, where she died, on 1 Oct 1944. My mother told me many years ago that Eva met and married her husband in the concentration camp. This most likely was Kaiserwald or one of the other camps in the Riga complex, because Eva died very soon after arriving at Stutthof, and she is listed there by her married name. She was still Eva BLOCH when she and her parents were taken >from Hannover. I know absolutely nothing about Eva's husband except that he survived the war. I would like at least to know his given name, and where and when he was born, but with a surname that's also a very common English word, and no other information, I've come up empty on every search. I've tried FamilySearch, Yad Vashem and the US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Can anyone suggest where else I might search for information about him? Thanks. If you know the German cities and events (birth, marriage, death, etc.) for
which you're seeking documents, have you tried contacting the Stadtarchiv (city archives) in the appropriate cities? I was able to get a copy of my maternal grandmother's birth certificate (19th century) by writing to the Stadtarchiv in the town where she was born. You can easily find contact addresses by Googling "Stadtarchiv" with the name of the city.
