(Portugal) Skeletons Found In Portugal May Be Remains From Inquisition #general

Jan Meisels Allen

A dozen skeletons found in an ancient garbage dump may be Jewish victims of
the Inquisition more than 400 years ago. In excavating what was the Jail
Cleaning Yard in the Inquisition Court of Evora (84 miles east of Lisbon,
Portugal), researchers found three male and nine female bodies. The "dump"
that was excavated was used between 1568 and 1634. It is impossible to
know with certainty if the remains are or are not Jewish. The article is in
the September edition of the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology

JW <njww@...>

Dear Genners,

I've posted a vital record which I've been informed is not Polish but rather

It is on ViewMate at the following address:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM41644

Can you tell me whether Marek might also be known as Mordek? Also, if
present what are the names of his spouse and/or children? Is there a
month/day of his death? Or any other dates?

Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Thank you very much.

Memoir about Anglo-Jewish ancestors from Poland #unitedkingdom

ruthnw@...

Dear All,

I thought you might be interested in knowing that my memoir, "Reverie: A
Jewish Childhood in War-Torn England," is being published by Amazon.com.

In addition to describing my childhood experiences in Britain during the
Second World War, including being evacuated with the Birmingham Hebrew
School to the countryside for safekeeping, and the Birmingham and Coventry
blitzkreig, it also provides genealogical background on my Polish-Jewish
ancestors, all of whom were >from Poland. (In the 1890s my maternal grandfather,
Israel DROZDIASZ, was a bugler in a Russian Army military band!) In one
chapter I talk about what it means, personally, to be an English Jew; the
chapter also includes sobering narratives of English Jews who had served in
the military during WWII, including former POW'S. Another chapter refers to
the unjust internment of thousands of Jewish refugees, who sought sanctuary
in the UK >from Nazi terror, only to find themselves interned behind barbed
wire. In the final chapter I describe going to Poland in 2007 where I visited
the former death camp at Treblinka to which residents >from my maternal
grandparents' hometown were deported and and where they perished.

The book can be found by doing a search by title: Reverie: A Jewish
Childhood in War-Torn England.

The last tenement in Boston's West End #general

Stephen Katz

For those who are interested in Boston's old West End, there was a
story in Sunday's Boston Globe that you might like to see. It's
about the only tenement building still standing in the West End - a
once vibrant community that was populated in the late-19th and
early-20th century by large numbers of Jewish immigrants >from
Central Europe. (The article refers to the building as "Boston's
last tenement," although that seems questionable - viz., the
still-existing tenements in the North End). The building has
survived the erection and subsequent removal of the elevated trolley
line, the erection and subsequent removal of the above-ground Central
Artery, the highly regrettable obliteration of the West End during
the urban "renewal" craze of the '50s and '60s, the building of the
TD Garden, and the "Big Dig." Here is a link to the article:
