JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Yiddish Forward online, but when?
#general
Steven Lasky <steve725@...>
I am glad that the Yiddish Forward, i.e. Forverts, is eventually going to go
online via the Historical Jewish Press website. However, the announcement gave no indications of when this scanning project might start, and what kind of timetable has been set up. I am doing research on Yiddish theatre, and having the Forverts online will save me the time and expense of schlepping into NYC each time to gather research data, etc. Will the microfilms of the Forverts be scanned at the NYPL/Dorot Divion on 41st and 5th Ave.? Will the many issues of the newspapers go on piecemeal, or will we have to wait till everything is done when all of the available editions will have been scanned and uploaded to their server? I know I can try contacting them, but I am wondering whether anyone might be able to shed some light on this. The folks I spoke to at the NYPL yesterday--while they might not have been the right people to ask--had no clue. By the way, the Historical Jewish Press has many other Jewish publications already freely online. The Yiddish-language newspapers and journals online there are the Haynt and the Jewish Morning Journal. You can find the latter (and links to others via a drop-down menu) at http://jpress.org.il/Olive/APA/NLI/?action=tab&tab=browse&pub=TJM . Thanks. Dear Werner!
As I understand Your relative was a serviceman of Austrian or German army who was killed in battle with Russian or Romanian troops. Petrisorul now is Lunca Petrisorului - a city located in Province Buzau, Romania - about 72 mi (or 115 km) North-East of Bucharest, the country's capital town. Regards, Igor Holyboroda, Lviv, Ukraine. --- From: Werner Hirsch <wernerh@snet.net> Date: Tue, 13 Oct 2015 I have a record that says that a relative of mine, Ludwig DAVIDSBURG, was killed on 22 Dec. 1916 during WWI in a battle at Petrisorul, Romania. The record is hand-written but the name of the town is *very* clear. I have been able to find a few references to this town on the Internet, but none which indicate where this town is located or what its name might be today. I would greatly appreciate any help.

See https://tinyurl.com/qjsjoh4 I "suspect" this particular Jaffe may have been Ashkenazi and not Sephardic because of the formulation "ha-Ashkenazi" ("the" Ashkenazi). Dear researchers, I realized recently that many of our members do not know where at JewishGen.org to find a list of all Cemeteries indexed or/and photographed. I received a number of messages asking if we did any work at a such and such cemetery. So, let's find out where is a list of all cemeteries: - go to www.jewishgen.org, and under Databases click on Burial Registry (JOWBR) - this is where the inventory of all cemeteries worked on. - The inventory is created by CURRENT countries (you will not find a country Bessarabia there!). - Our region as you may know was divided in 20c and now located in TWO countries: Moldova and Ukraine. - Country: Moldova (17 cemeteries, 31364 burials). Under Moldova you will see 2 Regions: Bessarabia (15 cemeteries) and Kherson (2 cemeteries). - Country: Ukraine, click on Region: Bessarabia (5 cemeteries, 3584 burials) (Actually there are 4 cemeteries: Kilia and Kiliya - the same town, it is a duplication). Also keep in mind that JewishGen / JOWBR updates the website two times a year, the FOUR cemeteries we completed in August and September will appear in JOWBR and on that list in the beginning of 2016. For these cemeteries you can see Cemetery reports, also Unknown Graves at Bessarabia SIG website. I suggest to read Bessarabia SIG Monthly updates, other postings where you may find new information about cemetery projects in progress. There are total of about 70 cemeteries where Jews were buried in Bessarabia/Moldova, and with your help we will index and photograph ALL of them in a near future! Here are also 2 rules we developed: 1) If you want to get a full LIST of burials in a cemetery we completed, for a donation of $100, you will get it, and also if you find your ancestors, we will send you photos, sometimes we may have 2-3 photos of a gravestone, and JOWBR will display of course only one. We can send you this even before the index/photos appear at JOWBR. I should say that many people made donations and received the complete list and photos. 2) If your cemetery IS NOT yet completed and the work is not in progress, you can INITIATE a new cemetery project by collecting among people you may know or related to that town, about 30% of approximate cost (we are paying for photos). I should say that majority of cemetery projects started in 2014-2015 are done this way. Of course if you cemetery is in work, please make a donation. You can find Bessarabia-Moldova Cemetery project at the donation list, and also there are several other cemetery projects on that list. If you have any questions, please let me know. Operation Boatswain Casualties
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission have now finally officially added the names of the parents of these men and their addresses - so for most it is clear they are >from Israel (then Palestine under British Mandate) - who died on the SOE Operation Botswain 18th May 1941, to the web site <cwgc.org>, and soon to the Memorial at Brookwood in Surrey <http://tinyurl.com/n9myqox>. This commemorates 3,500 men and women of the forces of the British Commonwealth "to whom the fortunes of war denied a known and honoured grave" Some names are spelt differently in transliteration >from Hebrew names so these are listed below for your reference. It has taken several years to get to this point but now it is done. Surnames first. They have been given the rank of Volunteer. It is obvious that some of these names have the forenames and surnames reversed.
