JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Barbara Mannlein asked for help with locating "Sally (?Salomon)
(b.1896) and Melitta Stern Joseph and sons Erich (b.1925) and Rolf (b.1926)." I found a website for Cementerio Israelita, the Jewish cemetery in Cali: http://cementeriohebreodecali.com. You can search for headstones under "búsqueda lápidas": http://cementeriohebreodecali.com/busqueda-lapidas I searched for Melitta's name, since it is the most unusual, and found a photo of her headstone: http://cementeriohebreodecali.com/node/248 . The Spanish letters are a bit fuzzy in the photo, but it looks as if she was born 8 June 1898 in Alzen (?) German, and died 28 July 1950. Since the family's last name is Joseh in the cemetery records, I then searched the surname under this spelling and found stones for "Sally" (b. 16 Aug 1897 in Kirn Germany - d. 12 Mar 1961) at http://cementeriohebreodecali.com/node/242 and Erich (b. 25 May 1925 in Oberstein, Germany - d. 23 Aug 1973 in Cali) at http://cementeriohebreodecali.com/node/157 . Note that the surname is correctly spelled Joseph on Sally, Melitta, and Erich's Spanish-lanugage stones, even though the name is misspelled in all three online records. So don't forget to check first names in databases in case a surname search yields nothing. The Hebrew Aid Society (Sociedad Hebrea de Socorros) of Cali has an English website at http://www.sociedadhebrea.com/en/index.html . And there is a 2005 Spanish article on the Jews in Cali at http://www.radiojai.com.ar/online/notiDetalle.asp?id_Noticia=12745 . Good luck -- Buena suerte! (Portugal) Portugal Starts Granting Citizenship Rights to Inquisition Descendants
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Earlier this I year I reported that Portugal had a new law offering dual
citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were victims of the Inquisition over 500 years ago. The law became effective February 26, 2015 and as of March 2, 2015 members of the Sephardic Jewish communities of Portuguese origin were entitled to apply for Portuguese nationality. On October 2 the Justice Ministry announced they approved the first three of over 200 applications they received. Among the successful applicants are Alfonso Paredes Henriquez, a Panama-based real estate developer, and his brother. Originally they were going to apply to Spain for the dual citizenship but Spain's law was delayed -that law was passed in June 2015 and became effective earlier this month. One of the organizations vetting applications, the Jewish Community of Oporto in northern Portugal, said Paredes Henriquez is a descendant of Spanish and Portuguese Jews. His ancestors were Rabbi Eliau Abraham Lopez, the great Sephardic rabbi of the Spanish-Portuguese community in Curacao and of Spanish origin, and his wife Rachel Nunes da Fonseca, of Portuguese origin. The Community issued certificates for Jews >from 23 countries with two-thirds of them for Sephardic Jews >from Turkey. With the dual citizenship, the grantees are entitled to a passport and the right to work and live in the 28-nation European Union. Bessarabian Cemeteries... where is the list?
#bessarabia
Yefim Kogan
Dear researchers,
I realized recently that many of our members do not know where at JewishGen.org to find a list of all Cemeteries indexed or/and photographed. I received a number of messages asking if we did any work at a such and such cemetery. So, let's find out where is a list of all cemeteries: - go to www.jewishgen.org, and under Databases click on Burial Registry (JOWBR) - this is where the inventory of all cemeteries worked on. - The inventory is created by CURRENT countries (you will not find a country Bessarabia there!). - Our region as you may know was divided in 20c and now located in TWO countries: Moldova and Ukraine. - Country: Moldova (17 cemeteries, 31364 burials). Under Moldova you will see 2 Regions: Bessarabia (15 cemeteries) and Kherson (2 cemeteries). - Country: Ukraine, click on Region: Bessarabia (5 cemeteries, 3584 burials) (Actually there are 4 cemeteries: Kilia and Kiliya - the same town, it is a duplication). Also keep in mind that JewishGen / JOWBR updates the website two times a year, the FOUR cemeteries we completed in August and September will appear in JOWBR and on that list in the beginning of 2016. For these cemeteries you can see Cemetery reports, also Unknown Graves at Bessarabia SIG website. I suggest to read Bessarabia SIG Monthly updates, other postings where you may find new information about cemetery projects in progress. There are total of about 70 cemeteries where Jews were buried in Bessarabia/Moldova, and with your help we will index and photograph ALL of them in a near future! Here are also 2 rules we developed: 1) If you want to get a full LIST of burials in a cemetery we completed, for a donation of $100, you will get it, and also if you find your ancestors, we will send you photos, sometimes we may have 2-3 photos of a gravestone, and JOWBR will display of course only one. We can send you this even before the index/photos appear at JOWBR. I should say that many people made donations and received the complete list and photos. 2) If your cemetery IS NOT yet completed and the work is not in progress, you can INITIATE a new cemetery project by collecting among people you may know or related to that town, about 30% of approximate cost (we are paying for photos). I should say that majority of cemetery projects started in 2014-2015 are done this way. Of course if you cemetery is in work, please make a donation. You can find Bessarabia-Moldova Cemetery project at the donation list, and also there are several other cemetery projects on that list. If you have any questions, please let me know. Understanding connection in Revision List

Julian & Sharon Peerutin
Hi
In the Revision List of 1834 for KHAIT >from Birzai, Lithuania there is a family group that I am trying to understand. It lists Abe KHAIET as the head of the household with Berel MORIL and his wife Rokhel MORIL followed by 2 young children Soro Dine KHAIET and Girsh KHAIET (both children of Berel). Abe KHAIET died 1831. So a possible connection could be that Rokhel Moril was married previously to Abe KHAIET Can anyone speculate as to the connection between the KHAIET and MORIL families and also between the children to Abe KHAIET and/or Berel and Rokhel MORIL Thanks Julian Peerutin Researching VELER / WELLER & SARFINOVICH / SHARFINOWITZ Linkuva/Kupiskis, Lithuania; CINDEL / TSINDEL Kupiskis, Lithuania; LEVIN Rokiskis/Kupiskis, Lithuania; PICK / PINK / PEEK Birz, Lithuania; DIAMOND / ORELASKY Siluva, Lithuania; DRUKER / PENN Dvinsk, Latvia; HIRSCHSOHN / LEVENBERG / LEVINSOHN / MANDELSTAMM Kuldiga/Pilten/Liepaja, Latvia; KALMEK / KALMANOVICH Rokiskis/Druyah, Lithuania; Braslav, Belarus; Dvinsk, Latvia; NYMAN/NEIMAN Poland; PEERUTIN / PIRUTIN / PIRUTINSKY Kraslava/Dvinsk, Latvia; Vitebsk, Belarus; CHAIT / KHAIT Birz, Lithuania
