Jewish graves in New Zealand #general

Sue Levy

In the past year I have submitted three NZ Jewish cemeteries to JOWBR - we
visited and photographed Palmerston North and Makara (Wellington 1970s- ),
and also Nelson, which I conjured up >from online sources, spurred on by
research into the Levy great grandparents who are buried there.

These are available on JOWBR and I challenge others to do the same for
ancestral cemeteries everywhere, starting with the small ones. It's the only
way we will get a catalogue of past generations, and online sources are
extremely helpful, at least in the ones I catalogued.

A team of us >from the Jewish Historical & Genealogical Society of Western
Australia (www.jhgswa.org.au) has made excellent progress with photographing
Perth's main cemetery, Karrakatta, which holds thousands of Jewish graves.
This should be completed and spreadsheeted this year PG!

A new major source for research on Posen Jews available free and anonymously online #general

JewishGen in its Kehilalinks for Poland,
<kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/poznan/Jews_of_Posen.html>,
has just published an important new resource for genealogical research
on the Jews of Posen Province. The website covers all 122 towns in
which Jews lived in Posen Province as well as other locations in the
province for the period 1772 to about 1923. It contains many thousands
of names of Posen Jews. The primary resource is a listing, available
free and anonymously online, "The Jews of Posen Province in the 19th
Century..." which is a source of both published and archival entries in
a total of 1,990 pages and contains about 10,000 annotated citations of
books, articles and archival fonds on the subject. The link also
references other reliable resources for research on the Jews of Posen
Province, today Wielkopolska, Poland.

Rav Ya'akov maybe Y(J)ACOBOVITS #rabbinic

Ari Dale <ari@...>

Some years ago I posted for information about Rav Ya'akov Segel of
Turicza in western Ukraine who had a daughter, Leah or Leni, who married
in 1863. It seems that "Segel" was probably not the family name but the
honorific acronym that Rabbis of Levite descent often used. In a later
census, the Rav's daughter was called Leni Y(J)ACOBOVITS. Rav Ya'kov
survived into the 1870s as he was sendak to several of his grandchildren.

Proakurover Zion Cong #ukraine

Debra Price <dsprice@...>

I, too, have contacted Rabbi Strassfeld. 3 of my family members are named
on one of the tablets (Netanel, Sanya, and Leib Greenstein, and Yehoshua
Kfar, Charles Kfare) and my father, Louis Kfare, was the last president of
the organization. As I told Rabbi Strassfeld, my father donated some papers
to YIVO and I had correspondence with another person who donated some to
HIAS. The only personal recollection that I have was seeing Rabbi Leib
Silverberg (the long-time Rabbi of the congregation) at family functions and
I have found a photo of him.

The congregation in NY raised funds to establish a Proskurover Synagogue in
Shaar Hanegev in Israel.

An interesting article in the Dec. 30, 2015, issue of New York's Jewish Week
-- "The Remnants of the Proskurovers" -- discusses Proskurov (now
Khmelnytskyy, Ukraine) and the long defunct synagogue on East 6th Street in
Manhattan that was founded by landsleit >from the town.

The article was prompted by the discovery of two marble tablets >from the
Proskurover Zion Congregation in the basement of an office building on
Manhattan's Upper West Side. According to the article, the inscriptions on
the tablets are "mostly lists of names of members of, and contributors to,
the shul and its women's auxiliary."

One of the tablets is now in the possession of Rabbi Michael Strassfeld, who
hopes to learn more about Proskurov and the Proskurover Zion Congregation.
His email address appears at the end of the article --
http://tinyurl.com/Proskurow (original URL:
http://www.thejewishweek.com/news/new-york/last-remnants-proskurovers#qxAcy8
fOWaB12fxv.99).

I just wrote Rabbi Strassfeld to mention some possible sources (JewishGen
databases, JGS-NY's burial society and organization databases, Google Books,
city directories on Ancestry, the YIVO Archives, and of course Ukraine SIG).
Hoping others will have additional suggestions for him.
