Hilary Henkin

I have a copy of "Aunt Lil's Famous Tested Recipes," by Lillian Chapman
Gottstein of Los Angeles, California. This copy appears to be her own
copy, since it's stamped with her name and address like a rubber
return-address stamp one would use for correspondence. I'd love to give
this to a member of her family, if any are reading this.

Is it possible that the town you are looking for is Butrimonys in
Lithuania? According to the JewishGen Communities Database, it was
called Butrimantz in Yiddish. The Trakai District Research Group has
translated records as early as 1816 for Butrimonys.

Jew in the Russian Military #belarus

June Genis

I wish to thank Martin Davis for the informative reference link he
recently posted about Jews in the Russian Military. Unfortunately it
raised more new questions for me.

I have a strong genetic link to someone born in Moscow which we
believe is through his maternal grandmother Ester Gamsheyev Okun, Okun
being my maternal line. He has a birth certificate for his mother
Sohia which proves that she was born in Moscow in 1906. I project
from this that Ester, was born about 1870 as his mother was the
youngest child of 5. The rest of my Okun US relatives appears to have
emigrated >from eastern Belarus.

Ester married a 25 yr career military man named Meir Kanfel and my
presumption has been that this is how she got to Moscow rather than
being born there. Now I find myself wondering if it might have been
her father Gamshei that served long enough in the military to warrant
being allowed to live in Moscow. I have been unable to find any other
information on him. The only other clue I have is a silver spoon with
the Russian equivalent of "GO' on it which was passed down in his
family which might indicate the family was wealthy enough to have been
granted the right to live in Moscow for non-military reasons.

I would appreciate any research suggestions that would help me
determine just how I am connected to this close genetic second cousin.
