1. If you google " nowe budy" you will get three small villages
"Nowe Budy" and one "Budy Nowe" - all all in central Poland.

" nowe" means "new" in plural, "budy" is also plural for "shack",
"booth" "dog house" - a simple small structure.

2. The two names sound to me differently . The approximate
pronounciation of Mietkiewicz which you indicated leads me to believe
that the name is ="Mietkiewich" - pls note there would be a Polish
diacritic sign under "E".

Subject: Wiktoria Ellbieta MITKIEWICZ of Budy Nowe

Dear fellow researchers,

I have recently found a Brazil immigration card, dated 11 February 1941,

for my cousin, Wiktoria Ellbieta MITKIEWICZ, who was born in Budy Nowe
(sic), Poland, on 6 May 1913, to Andrzey MITKIEWICZ and Jozefa
SZYMANSKA.

The JRI-Poland town index shows neither a Budy Nowe nor a Nowe Budy.

However, Google Earth indicates a Nowe Budy, about 14 km north/northwest
of Kutno, Poland and another Nowe Budy some 30 km to the northwest of
Warsaw.

Where would one find vital records for either or both of these towns? Is
anyone familiar with these towns? Has the Budy Nowe, mentioned on the
1941 immigration card, changed names?

Is the surname MITKIEWICZ a variation of MIETKIEWICZ or are the surnames
completely different? The pronunciation of the surname MIETKIEWICZ
("mint-key-eh-vitch") would indicate that these two surnames do not
necessarily mean that a MITKIEWICZ is related to a MIETKIEWICZ.

Adding to my hitting further brick walls, I have been unsuccessful in
finding a marriage record for Andrzey MITKIEWICZ and Jozefa SZYMANSKA,
neither the birth records of the couple. Looking up a marriage record
for a MITKIEWICZ and SZYMANSKA couple (ignoring the too Polish
Catholic-sounding given names) has also proved fruitless.

Finally, are the MITKIEWICZ and/or MIETKIEWICZ surnames indicative of
being Cohanim?

Any help >from my more expert and experienced fellow researchers will be
most greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

translation request Hebrew/Yiddish #general

J G

This is a request to translate a letter written in 1946 by Alexander Ziskind
Gurwitz to his Grandson regarding his High School graduation. AZG was a very
learned man who emigrated to Texas in 1910. His auto biography, in English, will
be published by the University of Alabama Press in May. It is a very interesting
story and insightful for those who may be interested in life in both Minsk/Bobruisk
and Jews in Texas during the early years. (please write privately for the Amazon
link or the University link if you are interested in reading this story before
libraries will host it on their shelves free of charge) I thank everyone who has
already assisted in the translation of other documents written by AZG, and I would
add, his Grandson and other Grandchildren were thrilled to read it, and will be
most grateful, as am I, for any assistance in this new request. I am a cousin to
this family, just to clarify my relationship.

Please respond via viewmate at:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM45671

As always, kind regards to this great collective that is this special community of
researchers.

Thank you! I found my Brazilian cousin! #general

Amy B Cohen

I just wanted to thank all the people who provided me with tips, links, sources,
and other information to help me find my cousin Johanna HEYMANN MOSBACH ROTHSCHILD,
who had immigrated to Brazil in 1939. As a result of the efforts of so many, I now
know who Johanna married in Brazil and when, where and when he died, and when and
where she died. I was helped by people >from several SIGs---GerSIG, LatAmSIG, and
JewishGenSIG. I tried to thank everyone individually, but in case I missed anyone,
I hope you will excuse this cross-posting to all three SIGs.

Jacob Zelbovitz #general

Hello all,

About 1910, Jacob Zelbovitz was a button maker in New York, USA. I found this
information in a court document >from 1918 dealing with the estate of Jacob's
deceased sibling. I have no other information or documentation on Jacob, nor have I
been able to find any information. Jacob would have been my grandfather's first
cousin.

Any suggestions as to where I should look to find more information would be
appreciated. Thank you for your time.
