LitvakSIG - our volunteers #lithuania

Dorothy Leivers <dorfleiv@...>

LitvakSIG is run by volunteers, at board level and as coordinators
of the various projects. There are volunteers who help with
databasing of records and it is this group which we want to thank
and recognise for their efforts. Some prefer to remain anonymous
so we cannot list all of them by name.

Two of our volunteers have just completed an enormous project -
the 1850-51 revision list for Vilnius. This new data will be
available to contributors to the Vilnius District Research Group
shortly. There are 23,695 lines of new data in this record set and
nearly 5,000 families are represented. A project like this saves
LitvakSIG close to $10,000 and frankly, it could not have been
undertaken without their work.

A team of 10 volunteers is currently working on the Kaunas 1941
Electoral list. The first ten of 74 books have been databased and
circulated. This large project would never be possible without the
efforts of these volunteers. The cost would be prohibitive.

I find it personally very rewarding to work with all of them and
want to take this opportunity to thank them and salute their efforts.

TThank you very much Gabor and Shulamit,
I found the English translation of this article, with the comments inserted very very interesting http://www.davidrllitchfield.com/2009/12/the-batthyany-conspiracy-all-innocent-on-the-eastern-front/ . No doubts this piece of history - both the events in the past and its further implications in the present - raise important issues relating to personal and family responsibilities, active and passive bystanders and more.
My personal interest is both historical (I find it very strange that this event in completely unknown in Israel, there is almost nothing about it in Hebrew...), yet I also have a personal interest in connection to my genealogical research: I found the Rechnitz massacre mentioned in some notes I took years ago when talking with my father.... I only now acknowledge that. He passed 5 years ago so I have no body to ask more about that. I am trying to trace ZOLTAN KRAUSZ, my father's very loved uncle who (at least according to my notes...) was murdered there. I wonder if anyone can advise me on how can I find the names of the men who were murdered there?

SACHA BATTHYANY, a journalist nephew of MARGRIT BATTHYANY, who grew up in Switzerland, learned by sheer coincidence, at the age of 30, about the family secret. He was driven to research the family's past and how this influenced the lives of the descendants to this day.

His book "Und was hat das mit mir zu tun? Ein Verbrechen im März 1945. Die Geschichte meiner Familie" appeared February 18th, publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch. There will be readings in the framework of the "Tag des jßdischen Buches" on March 13 at Helferei Zßrich and March 24 at the Schauspielhaus Zßrich.

By sheer chance I came across this information yesterday in an interview with the author which appeared in: Das Magazin, des Tages Anzeiger No 5/6- 6 February 2016.

I have no commercial interest or contact with either the Author, Das Magazin, or the readings.

A puzzle regarding Moses ROTH of Bolechow #general

Jennifer Mendelsohn <jennifer@...>

I wonder if anyone can shed light on the following.

While tracing the trajectory of some cousins, I found the December 14, 1902
manifest of 17 year old Moses Roth of Bolechow, arriving in Philadelphia. His
contact in the US is an uncle Leon Serwer, which matched the name of the person I
assumed to be Moses' father's sister's husband. Seemed pretty straightforward.

Except that Ancestry flagged a second manifest, >from just three months later, for
an 18 year old Moses Roth of Bolechow, arriving in Philadelphia on 16 March, 1903.
This time it gives his contact as his brother, Marcus Roth. The same family did
indeed have a brother Marcus who lived in Philadelphia.

Any ideas what I am to make of this? Is it even conceivable that someone could have
gone back and forth that quickly? Or do I assume that these have to be two people
the same age >from the same town with the same name and perhaps "Uncle" was used
liberally?

Any insights appreciated. It just seemed so odd.
Thanks.

Russian State Library Online Database #general

Jan Meisels Allen

For those with Russian ancestry this should be of interest and helpful in
your genealogical research.

The Russian State Library has an online database-all in Russian-and claims
to be the second largest online database. To see the first page interface
in English go to: http://www.rsl.ru/en.

To search the online database go to: http://www.rsl.ru/ru/s2/outsources.

For assistance in navigating this website for those who are not Russian
speakers, it is best to use a translator such as Google translate.
https://translate.google.com/.

A blog entitled Find Lost Russian and Ukrainian Family has an article that
gives step-by-step instructions on how to search the Russian State Library
using Google Search. The title of the article is "A Russian Genealogy

The surname you have run into could simply mean "of (or from) Borysov"
just like Berliner could be "of or >from Berlin".

Well this is not as simple as you have deducted.
Barysowska suppose to be the name of locality not a surname.

WALTER ELIAS

Dear JewishGenners,
I posted this several years ago but received no responses. Seeing that a recent
poster on the same topic was significantly helped, I am posting again. I need help
locating any record of my cousin Louis MENDEL, born 1896 in KIRBURG, Westerwaldkreis,
Germany to Sigmund and Bertha MOSES. He emigrated to Brazil in 1921. I am looking for
resources to help me track his emigration, and descendants, if any.
Any assistance appreciated.
