Bessarabia SIG Meeting at the Conference in Seattle #general

Yefim Kogan

Dear friends,

This year Bessarabia SIG Meeting at the conference in Seattle will be
different. We will not talk about our completed or ongoing projects - you
know that >from our communications, we will also not talk about new projects
- we will have time for it, but instead we will watch and discuss a film
about rural Moldovan village of Markuleshti.

Film A B S E N T is going to present to us filmmaker Matthew Mishory, whose
father was born in that village. The film helps us to understand why we are
looking into the past, what we can find there. Is it something Jewish
remain? Are local people still remember Jews?

You will hear Moldovan young and old talking about Jewish present in the
village, you visit houses where Jews used to live. Work in the Jewish
cemetery, listen to witnesses of Jewish massacre in the village.

Today is Yom HaShoah and that film for me is like an hour of silence to
commemorate our Jewish brothers and sisters >from Markuleshti and >from other
towns and villages in Bessarabia and Moldova.

I am looking forward to see many of you at the conference in Seattle, be
part of our meetings, lectures, seminars and discussions, and meet you
personally.

Bernard Spira in New York #general

Linda Berkowitz

I am searching for a Bernard Spira (b. 17 December 1892 in Ulanow,
Poland). He immigrated in 1913 and in 1922, he married Lina Ritzer.
They had at least two children, Benedict (b. 1928) and Fanny (b. 1924).
1930 and 1940 Census pages list him as a watchmaker/jeweler. His WWII
draft registration indicates his employer as Bush Jewelry in Brooklyn.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
