Brick Wall - Unique surname: SZAMPANIER /CHAMPANIER #general

Elaine Farran

Would appreciate assistance with a family mystery.

Although one of my ancestral surnames, SZAMPANIER /CHAMPANIER, is
unique I'm stuck in my research. I learned that this surname's
origins can be traced to Konskie, Poland, as far back as the late
1700's. Records show that many family members left Konskie around
the 1850's and settled in Piotrkow Trybunaliski and Lodz, while
others remained.

I have been in contact with one other family (#2) bearing that
surname. They live in the US. However, their ancestors adopted the
Champanier name in Poland before emigrating to the US because, as
their family stories tell it, they believed their original surname
was too long. In addition, their family came >from a region relatively
far >from the Konskie or Lodz areas. We have determined that ** we are
not related **.

I also learned that Polish Jews moved further eastward to the region
near or in Kiev in search of a better life, including opportunities
for farming, which led me to another branch of my family.

This Champanier branch lives in Argentina. Their ancestor, Samuel
CHAMPANIER, emigrated >from Kiev in the late 1800's and settled in one
of the gaucho colonies near Buenos Aires (Rivera). His wife's name
was Maria CHEPOWA.

We know we are related and ** not ** related to family #2 - but can't
figure out the ancestry to match. I have not been able to find any
documentation for Champanier in or near Kiev. Would very much
appreciate information. We will be meeting in December and hope to
establish the common ancestry.

Thank you

In response to the posts by Tony Hausner and Andrew Greene on the above
topic, there were Jews who were designated as "enemy aliens" in England
not only during World War II, but also during World War I. I am familiar with
this as my grandfather and many of his relatives and neighbors in
Manchester, England, were sent to the Isle of Man for detention at that time.

They were mainly >from the Drohobycz and Boryslaw, Ukraine, area and
either weren't naturalized or had served in the Austro-Hungarian Army prior
to immigrating to England. In fact, recently, I found a record on
findmypast.com in their "Britain, Enemy Aliens and Internees, First and
Second World Wars Images" database for my grandfather's sister. The
record was a Female Enemy Alien-Exemption >from Internment-Non-Refugee
card.

For those seeking info on this topic the data in findmypast.com is quite
helpful.

Do you know these families? #general

Dovie Gelerinter

This may be a bit unorthodox of an approach, but I've hit a couple
walls in some research and decided maybe this would help.

Like all of us, I'm trying to learn the family tree and, to that end,
I've connected with many other trees on a separate site. However, I
can see via some other trees that I'm not connected to, that I'm
missing various people and branches. I'm not a member of their trees
so I can't see names or details, but I can see gray boxes indicating
that people exist. I've requested membership to these trees, but it
seems that it's a common practice to put up stuff then walk away from
the site for a handful of years, so these people aren't getting my
messages.

To that end, I figured if I came in here and posted some of the family
names I'm trying to get more details on, perhaps someone among you
would know. I've done much online research of my own and solved many
similar mysteries, but I just can't manage to get these.

Without further ado, if you have the following names in your tree or
know of information regarding them, please reach out.

GELERINTER
SEROTA
TAUBER
SHULMAN
ANKRI
SHEINBERGER
KELLER/KLAHR (never got it clear how to pronounce in English)
GAMLIEL
LEVI
STERN

Rather than clutter up with first names, I figure we could refine once
you contact me if any of these mean anything to you. The bulk of these
people live in Israel >from what I gather.

Thanks!

Ship Manifests: Record of Aliens Help for Special Inquiry #general

Adam Cherson

Dear Ship Manifest Researchers,

I have located what I believe is my gg-grandfather Israel GORDON on a ship
manifest for the SS Potsdam >from Rotterdam arriving New York October 12,
1902. The complete manifest is available at EllisIsland.org.

At this point I have a record >from the manifest entitled 'Record of Aliens
Held for Special Inquiry' (RAHSI) with the word 'pauper' written next to
Israel Gordon's name. However, this RAHSI page contains little information
about Israel Gordon compared to what is on the regular ship passenger
manifest pages.

I need to verify if this is the Israel Gordon I am looking for since I
know his age (82) and some other facts (e.g., going to his daughter Goldie)
that I could match up with a normal manifest record.

So, my question is whether it would be worth my while to search the entire
ship passenger manifest for another more typical entry listing Israel Gordon
as a passenger, which entry would include the typically expected data such as
age, occupation, person to meet at destination, etc.

This would take me a long time, especially as I have another similar
RAHSI possibility on the SS Finland >from Antwerp arriving September 3, 1901.

If anyone has been in this situation before, or knows about how the manifest
records were created at that time, please be good enough to explain.

DESCHERE or TEIXEIRA from Hamburg #general

I recently found out that I am a DESCHERE descendant >from Hamburg. My 4x
great grandmother Kele DESCHERE died there in 1847. She was the daughter of
Yehuda Loeb DESCHERE, and married to my 4x great grandfather, Levin Heymann

DESCHERE is a very unusual name and there is speculation that the family

Sandy KOUFAX/KOVAC missing link

My mother made a claim in the 1960's that we are related to 'KOUFAX the
ballplayer'. She was >from Grodno, Belarus.

It was not until this summer, 50 years later that I found out on internet
that Sandy KOUFAX's ancestors were indeed >from Grodno, Belarus (KOUFAX his
step father and BRAUN his biological father).

I also wondered if I had sephardic roots through my grandfather BADASH
of Grodno which is a common arabic surname and sounds Hungarian. Sure enough
KOUFAX is descended >from Hungarian sephardic Jews.

I found out that my connection to the family is through Louis/Layb KOUFAX
who married Bessie/Basya and lived in the Bronx. If I can prove they are
related to Sandy's family then I am related to Sandy.

I also found out on internet that Douglas Allen KASS of Palm Beach,
Florida claims that he has the same grandparents as Sandy. Since Sandy is
a difficult person to contact I would like to contact Doug and ask him
if he is related to Louis and Bessie. I found a phone number but there
is just a recorded message and I did not receive a response.

Can someone please contact Doug and give him my e mail?
