A couple of weeks ago I asked some JGenners whether Chil Pinkwas
Djament, my grandfather's name, rang any bell. He was born in Cmielow
in 1905 to Moszek Lejb Djament and Fajga Djament, nee Lichtensztajn.
Chil immigrated to Brazil in 1930.

I now have a few other names and I wanted to renew my request for any
reference you might have on these. They were Chil's siblings and i
hope to find any of their descendants. The names are:

Lithuanian, Belarus and England and perhaps for a very brief stop in
Riga, Latvia and through Estonia to Janova, Lith- our Shtetl- and
surrounding area. We may also go to Kovno and Vilna and plan on going to
Glebokie in Belarus for the day..


I am seeking current information and recommendations on local guides
with or access to a driver with a car,costs, hotels etc and any other
suggestions you may have to make this a memorable trip for us. A number
of years ago, I visited some of these places. My goal is to have my son
make a connection to our families past.

Saul Wahl Katzenellenbogen, King of Poland for one night #general

Most of us have read or heard about Saul Wahl Katzenellenbogen who
supossedly was elected King of Poland for one night in 1587.

Is anyone aware of academic historical research dealing with this fact ?

I expressly exclude the myth and it versions, and the easily available
web references, but concentrate on hard investigation on the history
of Poland or Lithuania rpoving or disproving this legend.

By the way, Dr. Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" (1990, second
edition) says one source for the story is a much later manuscript by
R. Phineas Katzenellenbogen (a descendat of Saul Wahl) in the Bodleian
Library at Oxford.

Is there any research on this manuscript published ? Are there non
Jewish documents mentioning the story?

Tiraspol Uezd Revision Lists project #general

Dear Researchers,

Here is the update on the status of Tiraspol Uezd revision list
translation project. We have completed translating and sent about
7,800 line items to Jewishgen to load into Bessarabian DB. Please see
the records by locality below.

- Dubossary 1799 Additional Revision List and 1816, 1850, 1858 Main
Revision lists

- Agricultural colonies of Tiraspol Uezd 1858 Main Revision Lists
- Voynova - 30 families
- Buzinova - 109 families
- Balashova - 51 families
- Kisilevka - 3 families

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the team of volunteers
translators who have been working with me on this project: Ala
Gamulka, Sheli Fain, Alla Kovsharova, Aleksandra Khaskin, Marc Barer,
Yuliya Vayner, Alexander Volok, and Genny Imas.

We are continuing to work on this project as we have a rather unique
set of records coming >from Registry book of Dubossary Residents. This
Registry book contains information pertaining to real estate
ownership, residents occupation, towns visited, etc. Here is an
example of the record found in this book.

Starobazar Street. Stone house with two cellars and yards, built by

Seriously: passenger lists are as accurate as the information people
gave the steamship agent, the officials at the port, etc. Sometimes
those making the lists entered age or sex incorrectly, possibly because
their source wasn't very legible.

I can show you a manifest >from 1910 in which a family knowingly gave
false:

--names

--relationships to one another

--places of birth and last residence

--contacts back home.

The only things they gave truthfully were their ages and their
destination. (Probably also hair & eye color, etc.) The manifest shows
no indication that they were detained even for a moment upon arrival.
Even stranger: 5 months later, 2 more family members came to the
US--under their own names and with other information correct as well.
That's the last time any of them used their original family name. Who
knows what they were thinking?

Of course, most variances weren't intentional like that, but there were
any number of ways for such things to slip in.
