Dear Researchers,
I would like to thank the community in general (I have already thanked the
individuals) for the many kind and helpful responses to my query. One
member was able to provide the precise grave-photograph.

Subject: Needing help with Brixton Cemetery grave-record
From: Guyleslie@aol.com
Date: Mon, 8 May 2017 11:57:33 -0400

Dear Researchers,
Has anyone photographed the gravestones or records of Brixton Cemetery?
I specifically need the father's first name (via the subject's full Hebrew
name) of:

LIPSCHITZ, Simon Joshua
Died: 12-Oct-1939, age 67
Buried: 12-Oct-1939
Grave #: 5229
Brixton Cemetery / Johannesburg / South Africa

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Alfred Sydney WRIGHT #southafrica

Arlene <arlene@...>

I am presently going through the online 1974 deceased estates in the Cape
Town Archives which can be found online through the Latter Day Saints
website.

I found the estate of Alfred Sydney WRIGHT who died on 28 December 1973. He
had been married three times, neither spouse apparently Jewish. He had 2
daughters. His parents were Henry & Ada Wright.

Sounds Jewish? No. No record of his burial either.

But one of his creditors was the Rondebosch Hebrew Congregation!

A clue may lie in his mother's name as Ada, though not a common Jewish name,
is an even more uncommon non-Jewish name.

Does anyone know anything about him?

Double surnames #ukraine

Leonard Kranser <kranser@...>

I encountered the same issue of double surnames when researching Lithuanian
relatives. Two different marriage records gave two different groom's last
names, Zaks and Reznik. This complicated a search for arrival records in
the U.S. because some family members used one of the surnames but others,
arriving at a later date, surprisingly used the other.

The explanation appears to be that where there are two names separated by a
slash, as was the case with Zaks/Reznik, one is transliterated >from the
Russian, and one >from the Hebrew in pre-World War I Czarist Russian records.

GAERTNER and KAHN Burials in Rhaunen, Germany #germany

Marianne Gaertner <mlgaertner@...>

I have discovered on the JewishGen Worldwide Burial List 2 entries for
the surname GAERTNER / GARTNER in a cemetery listed in Rhaunen, Germany.
One is my husband's great great grandfather's brother.

The GAERTNER family lived in Rhaunen and we wish to find the location of
the cemetery there and if there is a list of the burials. The cemetery
listing on JewishGen says there are 52 burials. Hopefully we will locate
the graves of 3x great grandparents Jacob GAERTNER and his wife Judith
KAHN GAERTNER. The KAHNs were >from Rhaunen.

Is anyone nearby and familiar with this cemetery? I cannot find anything
online.

Thank you. Marianne Gaertner California MLGaertner@aol.com

Former Baltimore synagogue #general

David Laskin

I came upon a Masonic Temple in the 2000 block of McCulloh Street in
Baltimore that appears to have been a synagogue. The central window
has been partially covered over, but the uncovered part clearly shows
a Jewish star. And there is a carving of the 10 commandments at the
top. I'd love to find out about the history of this synagogue --
name, date of founding, facts about the congregation, when it ceased
to be a synagogue. It is now in a rather rundown black neighborhood.
Thanks.
David Laskin, Seattle, WA.

I am aware that there may hardly be any stones remaining in this town.
However, does anyone know whether any stones that have been discovered
in the town, been placed in a cemetery location? Have any of the stones
that might have been located been photographed?
Thank you.

I googled Baltimore Synagogue History and found this website:
http://www.kilduffs.com/Synagogues.html
Sharon Israel Synagogue is well down on the page. Good photos, but no history.

There is reference at the bottom of the website:
"Synagogues, temples and congregations of Maryland: 1830-1990, Paperback" 1993, by
Earl Price. Another possibility might be Acadia Publishing "Images of America, The
Jewish Community of Baltimore" 2008, by Lauren R. Silberman

Both available >from on-line booksellers.

Can you identify the emblem on this necklace #general

Judy Salomon

Dear Genners

I'v posted a photo of a necklace that my friend found at a flea market.

It is a Jewish star but part of a larger form. Does anyone recognize it? Can you
tell me more about it? Does it come >from a particular country or area? Is the red,
yellow and green ribbon of any significance?

It is on viewmate at the following address.

Thank you very much.

LIVSHITZ versus LIVSHITCH #general

David Goldman

Hello, Jewishgenners. It has been brought to my attention that some families
known by the name of LIVSHITZ >from Ukraine may actually have had their name
spelled/pronounced LIVSHITCH (as in the word KVETCH). My great-great-grandmother is
identified as having a maiden name of Livishitz, but now I wonder about this second
new possibility. I don't really think it shojuld make any significant difference
though in archival research in Ukraine. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I
have seen Lipshutz, Lipshitz, Lifshitz, and Livshitz, but never Livshitch.
