Re: Former Baltimore synagogue #general

Susan&David

I googled Baltimore Synagogue History and found this website:
http://www.kilduffs.com/Synagogues.html
Sharon Israel Synagogue is well down on the page. Good photos, but no history.

There is reference at the bottom of the website:
"Synagogues, temples and congregations of Maryland: 1830-1990, Paperback" 1993, by
Earl Price. Another possibility might be Acadia Publishing "Images of America, The
Jewish Community of Baltimore" 2008, by Lauren R. Silberman

Both available >from on-line booksellers.

I came upon a Masonic Temple in the 2000 block of McCulloh Street in
Baltimore that appears to have been a synagogue. The central window
has been partially covered over, but the uncovered part clearly shows
a Jewish star. And there is a carving of the 10 commandments at the
top. I'd love to find out about the history of this synagogue --

Can you identify the emblem on this necklace #general

Judy Salomon

Dear Genners

I'v posted a photo of a necklace that my friend found at a flea market.

It is a Jewish star but part of a larger form. Does anyone recognize it? Can you
tell me more about it? Does it come >from a particular country or area? Is the red,
yellow and green ribbon of any significance?

It is on viewmate at the following address.

Thank you very much.

LIVSHITZ versus LIVSHITCH #general

David Goldman

Hello, Jewishgenners. It has been brought to my attention that some families
known by the name of LIVSHITZ >from Ukraine may actually have had their name
spelled/pronounced LIVSHITCH (as in the word KVETCH). My great-great-grandmother is
identified as having a maiden name of Livishitz, but now I wonder about this second
new possibility. I don't really think it shojuld make any significant difference
though in archival research in Ukraine. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I
have seen Lipshutz, Lipshitz, Lifshitz, and Livshitz, but never Livshitch.

Potok Zloty gravestones/cemetery? #poland

Milton Koch

I am aware that there may hardly be any stones remaining in the town
of Potok Zloty.

However, does anyone know whether any stones that have been discovered
in the town, been placed in a cemetery location? Have any of the stones
that might have been located been photographed?

Thank you.

Harold "Pappy" Greene #lithuania

Sheila Osborne <sheilamosborne@...>

Family originally >from AKMENE in Lithuania. I am trying to trace how HAROLD
GREENE, director of pilot training in Israel to set up their Air Force in
1948, connects to me. He was born in the USA and had a plumbing and
hardware business in MAINE USA.

There are links with two spinster sisters who lived in DUBLIN and to
IRELANDS first Jewish mayor, ROBERT BRISCOE. Also, possibly to a
RACHEL KAHN who was born in Ireland and came to the UK.

Obtained street name via tax list, for Vilijampole. Does the street still exist? #lithuania

Mark London <mrl@...>

Hi - Someone pointed out to me that street names are listed in tax and
real estate lists. I found the street that my ancestors lived on,
listed as "Borkovskaya" street. Does anyone know if this street still
exist? Or if it exists under a different name? - Mark
