JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Offering (Again) Lookups in NYC
#general
A. E. Jordan
I am going to be doing another round of lookups next week and wanted to offer if
anyone needs documents >from the New York Municipal Archives or naturalizations or Manhattan probate. I might alos be doing the NY Public Library lookups. I will be available to get copies of certificates at the NYC Municipal Archives. Anyone who has availed my services in the past knows I have a sort of set routine. On these trips I am basically working as your eyes and legs for people who can not get to the Archives themselves. Generally what I do is transcribe certificates (or buy copies) where you have already found the numbers >from the online indexes or sometimes check for missing records with the tools at the Archives. Yes I can retrieve the City Clerk marriage licenses, the ones where the indexes went on line recently, and up to 1950 is available at the Archives. As a reminder I can only access births through 1909, marriages through 1937, City Clerk licenses through 1950 (after that requires going to the marriage bureau); and deaths through 1948. Also I can do naturalizations at the NY Supreme Court which is in the same building and probates for Manhattan. I ask everyone to cover the costs including the printing of certificates (if you want them) which is $11 each plus to help offset my costs. What I do is take the details you have and in the case of the Archives I actually look at each certificate on the microfilm before placing the copy order to make sure it is what you said it was. Sometimes I have to clean up errors in transcription of numbers, research >from your info to find the correct certificate number. etc. I pay for the certificates and then trust you to reimburse me. I can either scan and email or mail certificates. I type notes and email. Please understand that generic searches when you only have vague details (like Hirsch married Sima but that's all I know) or are trying to breakdown a brickwall that you have been working at for years requires an investment of time beyond a quick retrieval and I can not include in this offer. I am always happy to discuss any and all research questions involving NYC area look ups. Allan Jordan aejordan@...

Offering for Washington Cemetery, Brooklyn NY
#general
A. E. Jordan
Previously I made the offer to take photos at Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn. I
have not gone yet so I wanted to repeat the posting. Some of Washington's graves are on line at a paid site but other parts of the cemetery have not been recorded. Especially the oldest sections. It is very large encompassing fiv separate areas as I recall. I have not been there in a long time now. And when I go I don't have helpers with me at the cemeteries. Washington does not have a database so everything has to be done with the office which might mean I can not do as much as I have done at some of the other cemeteries. It will be dependent on the information I have and the kindness of the office. If you want to make a request maybe you could do a little of the leg work and call the cemetery office (if you do not have the information) and get the exact location of the grave. I need to know which cemetery -- they are numbered -- the plot name and location and any information they can give about the grave. If you are sending me a request, **please**, be specific. Recently someone sent me a family name and a society name and no date of death, no first name, etc. for the person. I checked and rechecked at the cemetery office and there was no one with that spelling and the society had four plots encompassing a few hundred graves. I felt bad but I could not help the person because they had not given me enough information. I am pretty good at location and photographing graves. My biggest problem is when all the stones are in Hebrew because it is hard for me to hunt for the single person then. I do appreciate a few dollars >from each person who makes the request to help offset the expenses. Unfortunately the gasoline alone is adding up on these trips so it helps me to keep doing this for everyone. Allan Jordan

The most comprehensive database of the repression victims is (http://lists.memo.ru/), it includes the data >from the database of the victims Files stored in Kazakhstan:(http://mvd.gov.kz/portal/page/portal/mvd/mvd_page/mvd_memorial). It is in Russian, of cource. There is the database for Ukraine: (http://www.reabit.org.ua/) - in Ukrainian. There are more name lists for Ukraine, published in separate PDFs. However, all mentioned above is not holistic - it may not contain the data about the place of the actual File storage. It may not contain the name at all, and you have to contact the States Security Service Archives directly (just recently I have such experience with Ukraine - eventually it turned out that the File is stored in public archive). This is the common situation with the people arrested in Harbin, also. If anyone needs the help with the database checking - I would be glad to help! Roman Ravve Kiev, Ukraine roman.ravve@... Working with the archival-investigation Files >from 1930-1940s, I am
always fascinated how many biographical and genealogic information it contains. People had been going through the serious of interviews, giving the information about their relatives at home and all around the globe. It lasted for half a year or more, when the arrested has been waiting >from one interrogation to another, sitting in a cell. They have been asked about their education, employment, political involvement, the distant family far away. To bring up the investigation, you have to locate the particular archive, where it stored at the moment. Then you have to contact them, explain how you connected to the person and ask for copies. There can be photos, copies of the personal documents, sometimes even the personal correspondence, which has been withdrawn during the arrest. There are several online databases and name lists, covering the political convicts in USSR - which investigation Files stored in the archives of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and other exUSSR territories. As well as the unpublished name lists of the Russians arrested abroad. Roman Ravve Kiev, Ukraine roman.ravve@...
