KUSHNER from Brest-Litovsk area #belarus

Steve Stein

I am looking for anyone researching the surname KUSHNER in the Brest,
Belarus (i.e. Brest-Litovsk) area. Hardly any of the matches for KUSHNER on
the JGFF seem to be in this area, but I have information on an Esther
KUSHNER who married a LEVY in Brest-Litovsk before coming to America in the
1890s. Esther's parents on her death certificate are listed as Morris
KUSHNER and Rachel SCHWARTZ. I also have census/revision records for a
KUSHNER family but they don't seem to be a match to the KUSHNERs I know
about.

Thanks in advance.

I am looking for anyone researching the surname GRUBSTEIN in the Brest,
Belarus (i.e. Brest-Litovsk) area. None of the matches for GRUBSTEIN on the
JGFF seem to be in this area, but I have information on a Pearl GRUBSTEIN
who married a LEVY in Brest-Litovsk before coming to America in the 1880s. I
also have 1850 Revision List information on the family of a Nosel David
GROBSHTEIN who apparently is Pearl's grandfather.

Thanks in advance.

Advice on heritage tours in Bialystok region? #poland

Jade Brooks <jadembrooks@...>

Dear all,

My name is Jade and I'm trying to plan a family trip to Poland to
visit Sokolka, the hometown of my great-grandmother. Does anyone have
advice on tour agencies that offer Jewish heritage tours? Any other
tips or suggestions for a visit to the region? Should we rent a car?
Should we take the train? Is it very necessary to have a guide
(particularly as we do not speak Polish, sad to say)?

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

My Brick Wall – from Vilna to London #lithuania

Peter Hills <petermurrayhills@...>

The first official record of my paternal gm was when she married my gf
Jacob Velonsky in 1905 in London. Her maiden name was shown as
Rebecca Raymond and - according to the wedding authorisation - born
1880 in Vilna.

However it subsequently emerged >from contemporary inscriptions on the
back of photographs that her correct maiden name was probably Pruzhan
and - according to old family letters - that she had a twin brother
Laizer also born 1880 in Vilna.

I have a copy of the original Vilna birth record for Laizer but no
trace of a twin sister. In fact no trace of any birth, census,
passenger, school or naturalistion records for my gm prior to her
marriage.

The old family clearly assumed she was a twin sister to Leizer but how
can I confirm that or otherwise when I cannot trace any official
records prior to her marriage despite researching for over 20 years?
Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you.

ALD Pasport Record Question #lithuania

Arnold Koslow <brooklyncowboy@...>

I found in ALD Search passport records in 1893 for what I believe are
my great and great great grandparents.

My question relates to who needed a passport for travel - in particular
were children under a certain age not required to have a passport.

The reason for my question is that while I found my great
grandfather Shachno Kacherginsky and great grandmother Sheina Rocha,
it did not list my Grandfather Eliash and Great Uncle Leib Meir
as having passports. My grandfather would have been an infant as he
was born per my records in early 1893 vs. mid 1893 when Shachno
and Sheina's passports were issued and Leib would be 10 or 11.

Thanks in advance for help with this question.

success story #poland

Joseph <jswalder@...>

Inquiries with family members about my paternal grandparents'
background went practically nowhere. I knew about their siblings
who had come to the US or Canada, but nothing about those who
hadn't and had been killed by the Nazis, nor about the older
generations aside >from great-grandparents' names.

My paternal grandparents were DAVE WALDER of Narol and FEIGE
(FANNY) GRABER of Sanok.

On my first visit to JRI--Poland, to my considerable shock,
I found records of a 1900 census of Sanok that gave the names
of all my grandmother's siblings. With that information in hand,
I was able to search further on JRI--Poland and find birth, death,
and marriage records that had been indexed, with copies of the
original records in some cases. I now have the names of all the
siblings of my great grandmother BEILE LICHTBACH as well as
the names of her parents. Moving back to ancestry.com,
I discovered that some of these people had emigrated to the
United States.

Many many thanks to the devoted volunteers who did the indexing.
Those records are very difficult to decipher.
