Zablocie near Zywiec (was: Current cities) #general

Alexander Sharon

Tom,

You are most probably searching for Zablocie near (ad) Zywiec. This used to be a
separate Jewish town near Zywiec (German: Saybusch), >from 1950 was integrated
within town Zywiec as the suburb.=20

Place is often mistaken as located in Krakow region due to its close proximity to
Krakow but it's actually administered by Slask (Upper Silesia) Province.

To make things a bit more complicated, vital Jewish records are indeed located in
Krakow but not in the traditionally lpcation such as Poland Government Archives
but in the Krakow National Archives. This is probably a reason, that many folks
cannot locate their ancestors records for Zablocie and Zywiec, please see
discussion forum archives on this subject.

You don't have physically schlep to Krakow to retrieve records, those days you can
do it through Internet by writing directly to Archives.

Polish Jewish Survivors India/US/Mexico #general

Lande

After the outbreak of war in 1941 several thousand Polish Jews fled via Iran
to India. I have come across a list of 700 of these refugees (mostly Jewish
women and children) who in March 1943 were taken by ship through the South
Pacific arriving in Los Angeles in July 1943. Since they did not have visas
they were taken by train to El Paso and then to Ciudad Juarez or Leon. The
Red Cross and the American Joint Distribution Committee provided assistance.

The files I have found do not disclose what happened to them after the war,
e.g. admittance to the US/transfer to Palestine/return to Poland.

I will prepare a list for Jewishgen but would be interested whether anyone
has information as to what happened to them after 1943.

This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>

A recurring subject in Yizkor books are accounts by survivors of the Holocaust who
returned to their home towns after the defeat of Germany. In "Stones Tell the
Tale," Eliezer Schenker writes of his return to Oswiecim in Poland, a name >from
which Auschwitz was derived. Jews called the town Oshpitzin. Schenker and his
family arrived "shriveled, hungry, dressed in tatters and penniless...and stood at
the train station of my birth-town without any possibility of recognizing it." He
describes movingly his visit to the cemetery which had been desecrated and where
he found a bomb crater where his mother's grave had been and he set a task for
himself to help restore it. Later, he asked himself if it was "right to abandon the
remaining vestiges of the cultural and religious heritage of Polish Jewry to the
Poles" and he decided to stay, which he did for ten years.

Looking for a young lady I knew in 1962 in Jerusalem, Nira GOLDENBERG. Presuming
she married, I do not know her married name.

Her parents (and she) lived in Rechavia in the 1950-1960s. She would
be around 73 y.o. today.
