For those who read German, let me add an extraordinary diary (not
memoir) written by a 13 year old girl:
"Mein Theresienstaedter Tagebuch 1943-1944" By Helga Pollak Kinsky.

I am working with the author and her German publisher to bring this
book to an English-speaking audience.

Helga Kinsky's diary was also a key source for this book/educational project:
"The Girls of Room 28: Friendship, Hope, and Survival in
Theresienstadt" by Hannelore Brenner.

Finding Bekescsaba marriage record and Hajduhadhaz birth records #hungary

david@...

I am very frustrated because a record is --- seemingly --- barely beyond
my reach by just 14 weeks.

I am trying to find the marriage in Bekescsaba on 4/14/1946 of my uncle
and aunt. Familysearch ends marriages on 12/31/1945. The actual document
would confirm birth info for my aunt in Hajduhadhaz

Not sure if this is an absolute block or if there might be a way around
this. Will familysearch be uploading more records in the future?

I have a similar problem in Hajduhadhaz. I know my aunt's sister was
supposed to have been born in Hajduhadhaz in 1928, so I suspect my
aunt's marriage record would show birth in that town as well (although I
do knot know year nor am I certain of the town as the birthplace --- I
only assume). But Hajduhadhaz birth records end in 1921.

So I am blocked no matter where I turn.

Any advice?

Thanks.

OK to send passport number to Ukrainian authorities? #general

robert sternbach <robertasternbach@...>

Hello to all,

I sent an email to the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv, asking
for records concerning my family in Drohobicz and Dobromil. They sent
back a form for me to complete, which asks for my passport number.

I sent an email to the U.S. State Department asking whether it is safe to provide
your passport number in these circumstances, but the response was not helpful. All
it said was "It would be up to your discretion if you feel comfortable enough
giving out that information."

Does anyone have any knowledge/experience whether it is safe to
provide your passport number to the Ukrainian authorities?

Thank you for your response.

Data from ships travelling to the UK in the 1860's #general

Benjamin First

Dear Genners,

Does anyone know how I can find data on people who travelled to the UK in the
1860's by sea >from Europe (origin Suwalki). Some of my Rubinski ancestors stayed
in England while the rest of the family moved on to New York. I would like to be
able to see the names of the other Rubinskis that mine may have travelled with as
well as any other information that it may contain. When searching ancestry.co.uk
nothing came up.

Many Thanks and happy purim

Need help in finding living relatives #general

Tsiporah Trom

I have already posted a while ago, but have now more material to work on, in the
hope someone can help me further in finding my relatives:

My great grandfather's brother, Morris Greenbaum (Moschek Grunbaum)
emigrated >from Warsaw to New York in 1906.

His wife, Anna (Chane Rivka, born Habergritz in 1874), and three children followed
him in 1910: Sadie (Scheindel) born 12/05/1896; Louis (Gersche ?) born 03/05/1898;
Benjamin (Baruch) born 18/04/1900. They gave as contact address Anna's sister and
brother in law: Golde and Rubin/Rudolf Stern.

They appear in Ellis Island and on the naturalization petition of Morris in 1916.
They were then living at 409 7th Avenue in Kings County, New York.
Morris is recorded as working as a machinist and being born on 25/10/1873.

They appear in the 1920 (Brooklyn, 859 42nd street) and 1930 Census (69 Assembly
district). Benjamin died in 1921 and Morris in 1939, he's entered in Beth David
Cemtery, Nassau County.

Louis married Sonia/Sarah Ginsberg in 1933 (certificate 12552, Kings County, NY)
But his birth date doesn't match anymore, it's recorded as 1906. He then appears in
the 1940 census with his wife and a son, Stephen born in 1939, living on 10 Monroe
street, NY.

Sadie married Julius Anker in 1936 (certificate 9486, Kings County, NY). Her first
name is recorded then as Sally. She also appears as Sally Anker, in the 1940
Census. She's living with her husband recorded as Jay Anker (working for the
railroad) And her mother Anna, age 63. Anna died in 1954.

I've tried looking through the SSDI records,Here is what I found (birth dates don't
always match the one I have >from the naturalization petition):

Sally Anker born 12/12/1895, living in LA, California, died on 29/09/1988.
Sadie Greenblum born 10/05/1896, living in Nassau County, NY, died February 1984.

Louis Greenbaum born 08/07/1898 living in Nassau County, died 1985
Louis Greenbaum born on 13/11/1898 living in Richmond, died 1979.

Sonia Greenbaum born 06/06/1903, living in San Bernardino, CA, died February 1986.

For Stephen, I only found a marriage index in 1967, to a Ruth M. Biatch in
Los Angeles. Don't know if it's the right person.

Could he be recorded as Sammy in the SSDI:
Sammy Greenbaum born 26/09/1939, living in Suffolk, NY,
and in 1997, living in Centereach, NY (is that a nursing home ?)

How can I check these out without incurring too many expenses ?

How should I work >from there ?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to look it through.

Shalom to the Discussion Group

I am researching my LEVY family >from "Russia'" who lived in the East End of London
from the 1880s until the mid-1950s. One of the children, Sarah (Sally) LEVY
(1899-1978), married Harry (Hyman)PHILLIPS, (1889-1966) at the Vine Court
Synagogue, Whitechapel in April 1942

Harry and Sally did not have any children, but Harry had been previously married
to Selina (Lina), E. WOOLF (1890-1939) and I believe they had seven children
(Philip, Rose, Sophie, Julia, Marie, Kate and Samuel). Harry (son of Philip
PHILLIPS and Sophia REES) was born in New York, but spent most of his life in
London, which is where his children were born.

I am interested in finding any living descendants of Harry and Selina.

Looking for Garber Relatives in North America from Pre-WWII Belarus/Poland #general

Rose S

Hello,

My grandmother's maiden name is Garber. She was in Belarus near the border of
Poland. Most of her Garber relatives, with the exception of her father Nevah
and his wife Sarra, her uncle Isaac Garber and his wife Mina, and her aunt Stisya
Garber and her husband Morduch (birth years late ~1880's-1900's), moved to North
America (either the US or Canada)before World War II. It is known that the
relatives in North America were alive and well off. They kept a brief
correspondence with the Garber's living in Belarus after World War II, until the
KGB forced an end to the communications.

I am searching for descendants of the Garber relatives who immigrated to North
America.I would appreciate any help/leads.

Thank you,
