This week's Yizkor book excerpt on the JewishGen Facebook page #general

Bruce Drake <BDrake@...>

Yizkor books are full of accounts of Jewish communities menaced by violence and
attacks >from gentiles or full-scale pogroms that caused much death and bloodshed.
There are also many stories of towns where local Jews formed self-defense groups to
fend off these threats as much as they could, sometimes successfully and sometimes
not. "Massacre in Beitch" >from the Yizkor book of Biecz, Poland has a somewhat
different twist: a new officer of the gendarmerie, who the townspeople initially
assumed was Christian, and became a savior when a "wild mob" of over three thousand
had gathered to do their worst.

German Lost Art Foundation and Mosse Art Research Institute Traced Nazi-Looted Art and Launched Online Database #germany

JewishGen German Research Division Coordinator

Last year there was a GerSIG message about the German Lost Art Foundation
which is a project of the German government which began subsidizing
private collectors attempts to return Nazi looted art to the families
of the original owners.

The government funding this at 3.4 million Euros, about $4 million USD.
The fund helps the current generation of owners find out how the art
objects came into their family. Under German law the descendants of
the original Jewish owners must rely on the good will of the private
collectors. Museums, however are bound by international principles which
require them to reach "just and fair solutions."

There are also statute of limitations that some current holders of stolen
art rely upon to prevent return of the stolen Nazi-era artworks.

Rudolf Mosse was one of the richest men in Berlin at the end of the 19th
century and thousands of paintings, books, sculptures and antiques were
seized >from him. The Mosse Art Research Initiative announced last year that
heirs and the Lost Art Foundation funded 500,000 Euros to help trace the
Nazi-looted art and return it to the rightful heirs. This is the first
cooperative research project between the heirs of a Jewish collector looted
by the Nazis and the German government.

Thus far, they have traced eight works - one at Vienna's Belvedere Palace
Museum, another at the Tel Aviv (Israel) Museum and Arkell Museum in
Canahohaire, New York, and Gdansk Polish Museum - the later which has not
yet been recovered. The Belvedere Palace Museum also housed the famous
Klimt painting, of the story of the Woman in Gold fame (Portrait of Adele
Bloch-Bauer I). Berlin's State Museums have restituted nine works in their
collections looted >from Mosse. Much of the looted art is also in private
collections.

If you're considering a visit to your ancestral town this spring, summer or
fall, and will also be visiting the local cemetery, please consider taking
photos of the remaining headstones for submission to JewishGen's JOWBR
database. As you know, JewishGen's goal is to preserve genealogical
information for future generations and virtually preserving headstones,
especially if they include Hebrew patronymic names, is incredibly valuable
to researchers.

Please check our current Cemetery Inventory at
https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/ to see if we already have any
data or photos for a particular cemetery and the date the last update was
done.no point duplicating work. Information on making submissions can be
found at https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Cemetery/Submit.htm
We request that submissions include complete, or near complete cemeteries,
not just family stones.

If you have any questions, please contact me at mailto:NAltman@jewishgen.org

JGS of Long Island Meeting #general

Jackie Wasserstein

The next meeting of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will be held
on Thursday, May 24.

Time: 7:00 PM
Place Mid-Island Y JCC 45 Manetto Hill Road Plainview, NY www.miyjcc.org

Guest Speaker: Ron Arons

Topic: "Sex, Lies and Genealogical Tape"

For 20 years Ron Arons has explored the colorful life of the great-grandfather
he calls "a criminal, a chameleon and a comedian." He will share his latest
finds about this serial bigamist who served time in Sing Sing, double dipped
on Social Security, and repeatedly lied on documents. Ron will describe the
wide range of records in his research. Ron's unusual approach to genealogical
research - focusing on one individual - brought his great-grandfather to life
and shed light on events that happened years after his death.

Ron Arons is an engineer and former marketing professional who now works full
time as a genealogist. He has had many presentations across the United states
and abroad. He is also the author of "The Jews of Sing Sing," "Mind Maps for
Genealogy," and "Wanted: U.S. Criminal Records Sources and Research Methodology."

Admission is free and all are welcome. Our "Mavens" will be available at 6:30
to take your genealogy questions.
